Trying to transfer music from iPod to Music Library in iTunes, impossible?

I have an old monochromatic iPod from about 5-6 years ago, 20gb. My desk top just crashed and I had to reinstall the operating system. Lost all programs and files. Reloaded iTunes with a clean Library. How can I sync my iPod and restore the Library without losing everything on the iPod? Most of the music was transfered from CDs.
Would greatly appreciate the help. I know enough about computers to get into trouble. Great at following directions though.
Thanks

Hello there,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
There are several ways you can pull the music off your iPod and onto iTunes. The first link below provides step-by-step instructions for the direct method if you have a PC as well as a few third party applications (for both the Mac and PC) if you choose to go that route instead. You can also do a simple Google search for "copy music from iPod to computer" and you should receive a number of sites that can help you out.
Just make sure that when you have your iPod plugged into your computer, that you don't hit "Erase and Sync" before completing the task of copying your music over.
Also, if you have any purchased music, you will probably have to re-authorize your computer by heading to the Store drop down menu and choosing "Authorize computer."

  • Itunes closes when trying to transfer purchases from ipod or iphone

Using a PC with Vista.  Installed iOS 5 this morning.  Cannot update either ipod touch 3g or iphone 3g with software update until "prior purchases are transferred to itune" - unfortunately every time I try to "transfer the prior purchases" Itunes closes completely.  I've been working on this for hours now.  Anyone got any ideas how to get around this?
    Thanks.

Your Post is a bit confusing

If you are using iTunes, you cant transfer purchases in the iPod to the Mac, you need 3rd Party Software.

Just bought Ipad mini and trying to transfer DragonVale from Ipod.  How do I do this?

Redownload it from the iTunes Store or sync it from an iTunes library which contains it. If you want to transfer its data as well, back up the iPod and then restore the backup to the iPad mini.

In iTunes you can set the preference to not automatically sync tunes.

  • How to transfer songs from ipod to your library

hi, sorry to bring up a new question, but recently i have restored my computer and accidently forgot to burn the paid songs from my library to a cd. the songs are still on my ipod, but for some reason it won't let me transfer those songs back to my library. is there anyway to retrieve my lost songs back to my library?

If you are using iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
For all other non purchased music (your own CDs etc) try this method which works on some Windows PCs.
Enable your iPod for disk use.
    See: iPod Disk Use.
Open iTunes and select edit/preferences/advanced/general. Put a check mark in the box marked "copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" and also "keep iTunes music folder organized", then click 'ok'.
Connect the iPod whilst holding down the shift/ctrl keys to prevent any auto sync, and if you see the dialogue window asking if you want to sync to this itunes library, click 'no'.
Then go to file/add folder, open 'my computer', select your iPod and click 'ok'.
The music files should transfer to your iTunes.
If this doesn't work (and it may not because officially it's not supposed to), check out the instructions/suggestions here.
Music from iPod to computer (using option 2). This a manual method using "hidden folders" and although it works, it can be messy.
Much easier ways are to use one of the many 3rd party programs that copy music from the iPod to the computer.
One of the most recommended is Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music and playlists etc from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
There is also CopyPod. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • Trying to transfer purchases from iPod crashes iTunes

My laptop was recently stolen along with my backup, so my iPod (Classic, 120 GB) is the only copy of my digital music. I'm trying to transfer my iTunes purchases from the iPod to the new computer's hard drive, but it crashes iTunes every time I try to do this.
I transferred most of my music (around 8900/9000 tracks) using a 3rd party program, since most of my music was burned from CDs, and that managed to get most of my iTunes store purchases as well. However, the last 100 songs include several iTunes tracks. They won't transfer with either iTunes, Music Rescue, or MediaWidget.
Anyone have any suggestions for a way of transferring my remaining files (especially the iTunes ones)?

Since I am not having that problem, I'm not sure it will work.
But one thing you can do is open itunes with a completely blank library. See if those purchases will transfer into a blank library. Article on making a new library:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1589
Make sure you only press the transfer purchases or things will go VERY wrong. But I think you know that.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848
DO NOT PRESS ERASE AND SYNC.
Also - was that 3rd party program free, or something you paid for? The free ones I've tried have had some problems. If you paid for it, I would ask for support on getting those 100 lost tracks.
Just curious, which 3rd-party ipod manager was it?

  • Anyone tried the "Transfer Purchases From iPod" function

    Hi all,
If you've tried this, when you view your library on iTunes on your computer, how is the music that transfers from the iPod into iTunes differentiated from the stuff that is already in your iTunes library?
    Thanks

I have used it and it is great, except that I can only get it to transfer purchases to my 2nd computer. 99.5% of my itunes content is not purchased from itunes. iTunes supports ripping CD and using your own music, so I am not sure why the other music is not coppied. I do understand and agree that the second computer must be authorized with the same account. This prevents piracy.
All I know know is that when you plug your iPod into the second computer, a pop up box asks if you would like to transfer your purchases. They are now on the 2nd computer and you do not need to leave the iPod plugged up. I do not know if play count is synced between computers, or if we will be able to use this feature with actual music that we want to listen to between computers and iPod.

  • Trying to transfer photos from ipod to pc

I've got about a gigabyte of photos that I put onto my 60gb ipod photo. Recently lost all of the original files from my computer (pc), and am trying to transfer them back from the ipod. All I can see in the Photo folder of the ipod (using explorer, adobe photoshop, etc.) are ".ithmb" My suspicion is that these are readable only on the ipod, but if anyone has any other ideas for retrieving these photos, it would feel like a miracle; they're everything from the past year!!!

my best guess is that we didn't enable the "full resolution" option when transferring photos. This then made the ipod convert the original files to its own read-only format (ithmb.) The only thing I can find to convert these buggers is a mac only program, "file juicer"
If there are any confirmations or negatations to this comment, they would be much appreciated...

  • Trying to transfer songs from ipod classic to new ipod touch.  Itunes wont allow device library to load into itunes library?

My daughter received an ipod classic and loade4d some songs onto it from another itunes acct/computer.  She also now has a new ipod touch and wants to transfer the songs, but I can't get it to share or add to iyunes librabry?

You need a 3rd party software to copy the iPod data to your PC, iTunes, then sync iTunes to the Touch.

  • Trying to transfer songs from ipod to mac

I have an Ipod touch that is my bf's, his ex was the primary user and the account info is all her. I do not have itunes password. We don't care about apps, and i would like to reset with his info, but there are over 1,200 songs and most are not itunes purchases. How can i get them off the ipod and onto my mac? when i try and transfer it tells me my computer isn't authorized to her account and i can not transfer only 76 items and that is fine, but when i hit cancel it ends transfer.
    thanks

The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.
The ONLY exception is itunes purchases.
If this music belongs to his ex, then it is not yours at all and it would be illegal to take the music from it.

  • The ipod cannot be synced, an unknown error (13014) ocurred - this is the error message I am getting when I am trying to transfer purchases from iPod. Problem is unless I transfer I am failing to update my IPod touch to iOS 6.0.1

I need to update from 4.3.3 to 6.0.1 so that my apps can take in relevant updates and brun properly. However, update is failing midway on error -5000 and the only way seems to be transferring purchases on ipod to itunes as being suggested by onscreen prompt just when I am undertaking the update. Problem is I can't even do the trabsfer as IPod wouldn't sync properly....error 13014. Has anyone come across this before and resolved it successfully?

  • Trying to transfer music and vids(30g)ipod to new computer? Somebody help

just recently got new computer, I have a 30g ipod,I'm trying to transfer songs from Ipod to new computer without erasing anything. Have about 1900 songs, half is from Itunes and the other half is from CD'S. Very fearful of erasing everything, someone help me out me.

For iTunes version 7 or later, then you can transfer purchased iTunes store music from the iPod to an authorized computer by using the "file/transfer purchases from iPod" menu. Note that the maximum of 5 authorized computers applies here.
Find out how to do that here.

If you want to recover just the structure of playlists from the iPod (and not the actual song files themselves), there's iRepo for Windows. which I understand has this feature along with all the standard features for these programs.
iPodRip also has the feature enabling you to reconstruct playlists.
There is also CopyTrans. This does preserve ratings/playcounts etc if those are important to you but this program is not free. It also supports video transfer.

  • Just got a new mac computer and none of the music from my old computer's itunes transfered when I transfered the contents of the hard drive.  Now I'm trying to transfer music from my ipod and can't get all the files....help?

Just got a new  computer and none of the music from my old computer's itunes transfered when I transfered the contents of the old hard drive.  Now I'm trying to transfer music from my ipod and can't get all the files....help please?

The iphone is not a storage/backup device.
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
Have you failed to do this?
If so, not good, then you can transfer itunes purchases:  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You may be able to purchase a third partyn program to get the rest ( not supported by Apple)
