Trying to understand/make iphoto import from 3gp phone

OK. I plug in my digital camera, and iphoto syncs jpegs and avis no problem, but when I plug in my cell phone (SE K790A), and it syncs the jpegs, but leaves the 3gp files just sitting there. I know iphoto can import 3gp videos if I do a second step and cache them on my desktop first, but this becomes not just cumbersome, but also messy since I have to actually try and recall which video MOV0792 was, or let iphoto create duplicates all over the place when I can't recall which ones have already been imported and dump them all.
It seems to me, this is a pretty obvious and simple thing for the software to be doing, but I don't know how to get it to work. Can anyone offer some insight?

There's no plist?
No "I had that problem too, but Apple told me to P.F.O."?
Nothing?

  • Trying to understand how iPhoto keeps track of pictures...

I am trying to understand how iPhoto stores & organizes pictures.
I moved JPEGs from a portable drive to my hard drive, set iPhoto's preferences to not copy pictures when importing them, then imported them. Unfortunately, all pictures from a certain import has duplicated in iPhoto.... so I "moved to trash" all pictures from that import and tried importing again since the JPEGs were still where I moved them to. When importing, it said they were duplicated .
I am confused. If I "move to trash", I assumed it got rid of whatever index (and preview cache) to that particular JPEG. I was actually surprised it did not delete the actual JPEG but I'm ok with that.
Can someone help explain this behavior?
    Thanks
    -Ed

iPhoto is a relational database program
In the strongly recommended managed library (you have chosen to ignore this recommendation and use a referenced library) imported photos are copied to the iPhoto library and stored in the originals folder, a thumbnail jPEG is created and places in the data folder and when any modification is made (including autorotation) a modified version of the photo is created and placed in the modified folder. iPhoto updates its database entries to reflect everything it does.
It is critical that you do not make any modifications of any sort to the content or structure of the iPhoto library - doing so is likely to corrupt the library and cause you to lose data.
When you use the referenced mode which you are doing (and which is not recommended) you are taking total responsibility for the original photos which included not moving or modifying them while iPhoto is referencing them
Unfortunately, all pictures from a certain import has duplicated in iPhoto.... so I "moved to trash" all pictures from that import
Did you do this with the iPhoto trash? or did you use the finder to modify the contents of the iPhoto library.
If I "move to trash", I assumed it got rid of whatever index (and preview cache) to that particular JPEG. I was actually surprised it did not delete the actual JPEG but I'm ok with that.
again - iPhoto trash or finder trash. If you move a photo to the iPhoto trash and empty it all traces of that photo in the iPhoto library will be removed - nothing will be done to any file outside of the iPhoto library -- ever

  • Trying to rebuild my iphoto library from time machine backup and it still says 0 restored with a grey screen and the circle. How can i restore my library?

I just bought a new Macbook pro and i tried to rebuild my iphoto library from a time machine backup on an external hard drive. Even after pressing command+option when starting iphoto and selecting rebuild library from automatic backup, it still doesn't work with the grey screen with the white circle and a little window that says 'rebuilding library: 0 versions restored'. I also tried to make a copy of my iphoto library but that did not work either. how can i restore my iphoto library or at least gain access to my photos?

    Your question is not clear
Rerairing or rebuilding the iPhoto library never involves using Time Machine in any way
TM is a totally seperate program and you can "restore" a file (including the iPhoto library) from the past using TM - you launch TM and go back to the time you want and select the file (or folder or package) you want and click restore - it probably is best to keep the current one until you are sure everything is good

  • "Check that you have permission to write to the library directory." I had this error pop up when trying to access a iPhoto Library from Finder.

The error, "Check that you have permission to write to the library directory." Displayed after trying to access a iPhoto Library from finder. The file is located on the local hard drive and was accessed not 5 minutes before the error displayed. Upon searching the forums I found a similar problem and the instructions said to check a permission box in the "Get Info" tab. There was no box visible and after clicking the arrow to open the "Open With" tab, the rainbow wheel started to spin and I could no longer access Finder or the desktop. I was deleting files trying to make space on my hard drive and noticed as I was deleting files more data was being added to the iPhoto Library. My question is how can I fix this and how can I prevent this in the future, thank you very much for any help, I would really like to keep these pictures.

This applies only when the Library is on an external drive. You cannot ignore permissions on the system drive.
I was deleting files trying to make space on my hard drive
    What were you deleting?
and noticed as I was deleting files more data was being added to the iPhoto Library.
Hard to see how deleting files can add data to the iPhoto Library. Can you explain why you thought this?

    Make a back up now.
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

  • My iPhone was stolen last night and I'm trying to recover all my photos from that phone and get them on my mac laptop. The iCloud photo stream only imported 1,000 photos from my stolen phone. How can I retrieve all of my other photos?

You have to reset the device to Factory Settings in order to restore it from an iCloud backup. You probably want to back it up as is before you do this.
To do the reset after you have backed up the current device, go to Settings>Reset>Reset all Content & Settings. This will erase the device. If you are signed onto iCloud with Find My iPhone turned on, go to Settings>iCloud and scroll to the bottom to sign out of iCloud before you do the reset.
Once you have reset your device, you will set it up like a new phone. When it asks if you want to restore it from an iCloud backup, select the backup you want to restore it from.
    Cheers,

  • Tried to copy my iphoto library from my old mac and I get 7 times more photos???

I had under 5,000 photos in my old iPhoto library on my old mac pro desktop.
After I tried to import the old library into my new iPhoto library (on my new mac i7 running Mavericks), iPhoto ended up with over 35,000 photos.
iPhoto was literally creating events for single photos when the old iPhoto library never had such events. I already tried doing a search in this forum and googling but didn't come across a similar issue. The names of the events were gibberish as in the names of folders you would see if you controlled clicked and selected "show package contents" and drilled way down.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Sounds like you imported the library into iPhoto on the new machine.
Never import one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Problem with iPhoto import from camera (gets stuck)

Hi, I am having an issue with an import from digital camera to iPhoto. I've had this camera and this MacBook for years without any trouble. The import I am trying to do has about 1600-some photos and a handful of short videos in it, but most are duplicates, so when the import starts, I tell it not to import the duplicates. iPhoto does its thing, but it gets stuck after about 205 new photos. The screen just stays on one image and looks as though it is still importing. I left it for hours and it never advanced. So I clicked the button to stop the import, which didn't seem to work, because the message "Photos are being imported to the photo library. Please wait for the export to complete" came up when I tried to quit iPhoto. So I had to Force Quit. When I reopened, fortunately my Library was intact and the photos that did go through went to a special "recovered" folder. I went through the process again in hopes that it was a glitch, but the same thing happens. I decided to delete the video on the camera that iPhoto seems to keep getting stuck on. This did not help. The same results (as described above) keep happening. I can't figure out what to do. I know I need new hardware sometime soon, but there should be a fix for this... Thank you.

Try using a card reader.  That way you can open the memory card as it were an external volume, select and drag the files in small groups to a folder on the Desktop. That way you can isolate those files that are causing the problem.
If there are only a few files that won't cooperate you may have to sacrifice them so you can reformat the memory card using the camera and then test it with some test photos and videos.
Is it just videos that won't copy?  See if you can determine which files are causing the problem.

  • IPhoto import from iPhone. How to keep changes?

    Hi,
I'm using my iPhone 4s for taking photos. I'm often editing this photos in my iPhone (mostly optimize it or cut it).
After connecting with my laptop, the automatically export from iPhone to laptop's iPhoto occurs, but all the imported photos are in the original condition.
If I import photos from iPhone to Facebook, it appears including the changes. If I import them to my laptop, the changes are gone..
How can I save/import my photos to my laptop including the changes? Thank you!
    I'm using MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Mid 2014), 256GB SSD (115GB free), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, Intel Iris 1536 MB
    OS X Yosemite, ver. 10.10.2, iPhoto ver. 9.6.1 (910.42). I'm using iPhone 4s.

It is not yet possible. Connecting the iPhone by USB and importing will download the original photos and not the edits.
Apple recommends to mail the photos to your mac to transfer the edited versions., see this support document:  iPhoto and Aperture don't have edits to photos you import from iOS 8 devices - Apple Support
