Trying to update my iPhone 3 software

I have been trying to download a software upgrade for my iPhone3 for about two months. I always get the message that the network connection timed out and the download was unsuccessful. I've downloaded updates in the past with no problem. I've turned off the firewall and still get the same message. I just downloaded the lastest version of iTunes with no problem either. Any ideas?

Yes, still no luck. My sister-in-law tried changing USB ports and changing the cable to the phone (although I'm not sure what either of these two things have to do with downloading the software to my computer) and these ideas did not work either. Thanks for the suggestion, tnhough.
