I haven't updated my iPod Touch in a long time -- it's iOS 4.1. iTunes says it needs to be updated, but when I press the update button, I get a message telling me that "This version of iTunes (9.2.1) is the current version." And that's it. It never even tries to get the iPod software. What the...? What am I supposed to do, here?
My Mac is old; it's 10.4.11 and lacks Intel. Software update says that everything is up to date.
You need itunes 10, which requires Mac OS 10.5.8 or later in order to update your ipod.

I suspect you have the original (first generation, 1G iPod those can only go to iOS 3.1.3, If your iPod does not have an internal speaker and no volume buttons on upper left edge it is a 1G.
