Trying to update software from PC

My new smartphone says the software update (BlackBerry Desktop Software 7.1 Installer) is too large.  So I tried over and over again to update it from my PC.  I continue to get the "Error 1723" message.  I see where you've suggested removing the battery.  I was told by my provider not to do that.  Besides, I don't want to lose everything I've already added.
Please help.  Feeling frustrated.
