Trying to update to iOs 5.1.1 error that c drive is full on computer help

Why do I need all of this disc space to update my iPad and should I just wait until I buy a Mac?  My PC is on its last legs but we still are using it.  I would like to update my operating system, but don't know if I should bother with the PC... Also, can they help me at the store to do the upgrade if I am there buying a new computer?

If your boot drive is full, it is simply a matter of time before it crashes and you lose everything.
You should...
Keep at least 10%-15% free space on yrou boot drive. This keeps room for the OS to do stuff.
Immediately back up all important data.
Delete unused applications and files.
Run disk cleanup and defrag.
Doing this now will keep your computer going and ensure a smoother move to your Mac when you get it.
