Trying to Upgrade to 10.5 and BSoD

Okay, so I went to my local Apple Store, and asked one of the people that worked there if I would be able to update my iBook G4 from 10.3.9 to Leopard and he said yes, but I can't remember if they get paid for their sales so I don't know if I should trust them. But I digress. When I got home i popped the disc in and opened the application and pushed the restart button. My stuff closed down and it began to restart like normal. The gray Apple screen popped up like it usually does, but then it all went down hill. A blue screen appeared and then it went gray but my mouse showed up so I had some hope. It was doing that rainbow, spinny, thing it does when it's busy, So I left it for a few hours thinking it was just updating stuff. I checked back after like 3ish hours and it was still doing that. I figured oh well and just left it on over night. The next morning I woke up and it was still doing that. So I just left it doing that and it did that for 2 days with no change. I restarted like normal and held the option key and chose it. But all the same.... Is there something wrong with my computer or the disc? Is there anything I can do? I'm really hopeless because the apple store doesn't allow open-box returns.....

To rule out hardware problems, boot the machine with the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with it and run the extended tests. If it passes, then download and run Rember and check out the RAM. If it passes, then try booting with the Leopard install disk, ensuring that there's no grime, grease, or scratches on it. If it works, continue; if not, return the disk, since it appears faulty. I don't buy the open-box limitation you cite since there's no way to ascertain whether a product is good or bad unless you open the box!

    Please google search for "Mountain Lion disk crash" before upgrading you mac pro. You might need to replace you Mac hard drive after the upgrade.So many people had the same problems including me.
    Be aware of the Mountain Lion upgrade problem.

    Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
    Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
    If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?

  • Tried to upgrade to new itunes and now can't load itunes or quicktime

    HELP! i tried to upgrade my itunes. This upgrade was totally successful. I then had another problem on my computer so i tried to restore my computer to an earlier timepoint. Since I have done this, I can't load itunes or quicktime. I have tried to uninstall the programs and reinstall them but it still doesn't work. I get an error message on quicktime:
    failed to initialize- error-2095
    The itunes error message reads :
    iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
    Help- I am going insane with this!!!

    I followed a link and somehow ended up at this post from Mike Hogan3 and combined it with something else I came across. This is what worked for me!
    1)Follow his suggestions for removing quicktime and itunes (at the end of this message).
    2)Then reinstall iTunes from:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    3) Then install QuickTime Standalone Installer from this page (located in the middle right of the page- don't install the one with iTunes!) http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
    Hope this works! It did for me!

    This might not be exactly the same problem but lots of people (myself included) had problems after installing iTunes 6.0. I did the following and it finally installed correctly.
    I went to

    and downloaded the Cleanup utility near the bottom of that page. When it installs on your machine it will scan your computer for every installer every ran on you're machine. Only select iTunes and Qtime and delete those 2 installers. Then I went to add/remove programs and removed iTunes and Qtime. Prior to this Qtime would not unistall but now it did. Funny thing was there was no prompting by windows once I hit "remove/repair" in the "add/remove programs" function.
    Then rerun the iTunes 6.0.1 update. That had been failing to install Qtime prior to this but now it installed and I see all my music again and iTunes works. Let me know if this does the trick, I hope so.

    Doing the same.  Progress bar not moving at all, but it does show 3 hours remaining instead of the 4 hours it did a couple of minutes ago.  Go to summary.  does it say "iTunes is currently downloading software for the iPhone" ?
    My phone went on and it still says phone disabled with the added little gem of my sim now also being locked.

  • My mac wifi connection to DSL line was down when I tried to upgrade Ipad to IOS6, and it defaulted to Ipad data line and consumed my monthly allotment of data -- How can that happen as a technical matter?

    Maps did not work for me for the first week after upgrading to IOS6 on my New Ipad -- I have since learned that I exceeded my 2 gig monthly data plan and therefore I had no 4G access on my ipad, which meant Maps couldn't work while traveling.  Since I never download videos, I knew I had not knowingly downloaded that much data.  When I called AT&T, they told me that when I upgraded to IOS6 I consumed over 1 gig of data.  
    I did the upgrade while connected to my iMac, which in turn has a wireless connection to router connected to my home DSL line.   My wifi service has been spotty lately, possibly because router is defective.  So let's assume that when I tried to download IOS6 that my iMac did not have a good wifi connection.  Is the AT&T person correct that the download defaults to the Ipad's 4G cellular network, even though the iPad is connected to the iMac by USB cable?  I didn't think that was possible as a technical matter -- i.e., that the iMac gets automatic access to the iPad's connection to the cellular network.  (I'm sure I'm not explaining this right, I'm obviously not technical.)   
    Also, do you get any obvious warning or indicator on the device that you have exceeded your data limit for the month?  I sure didn't see any warning, (although I now know that I can go to Settings, then Cellular Data, then View Account and find the status of my data line account).

    You are describing what sounds like the Microsoft compatibility check tool. It runs to make sure whatever issues may occur are known before an upgrade to Windows 10. If you need a more solid solution I would suggest contacting Microsoft directly as it is their tool.

  • Trying to upgrade to FireFox 4 and getting this error: The operation can't be completed because the item "libsoftokn3.dylib" is in use.

    I am using a new MacBook Pro. I click on the "Download FireFox 4.0" button. The file(s) download and the dialog appears to drag FireFox icon into the Applications folder.
    I get a dialog that says "There is a previous version.. Ok to replace?" I click "Replace".
    Then I get a Copy dialog that says: "The operation can’t be completed because the item “libsoftokn3.dylib” is in use."
    The software is not updated and I am still on FireFox 3. I tried rebooting and doing it again - I get the same results. I also did a web search and was not able to find a solution to this error.

    I had success by:
    1- Quit Firefox
    2- Go to the Applications folder and drag Firefox to the desktop
    3- Install Firefox 5 (it installs successfully at this point)
    4- Put old Firefox in the trash
    5- Secure empty trash
    It may be possible to just drag Firefox directly to the trash and use regular Empty Trash, but I did not try that. Some people on the net reported that they could not empty the trash after putting the old Firefox in the trash (got the same "libsoftokn3.dylib is in use" error), so I just tried Secure Empty Trash, which may be no different from a regular empty trash as far as this goes; not sure as I'm a bit new to the Mac.
