Trying to use an old XP computer as a file server.
It has my iTunes library on it and I want to access it from my Windows 7 PC. I have tried Home Share, but the XP library does not show up on the Win 7 machine. However, the Win 7 library shows up on the XP PC. I've also tried sharing the iTunes folder and creating a network drive. The album and song info show up, but when I try to play a song I get the error The song XXXX could not be used because the original file could not be found. I don't really care how it happens, I just would like to use the old XP PC as a file server. Any suggestions (I have tried most of the obvious stuff like logins, updates, re-installs, etc.)?
As the 2007 iMac models don't support video in, you need to use a VNC setup such as what ScreenRecycler provides.

I have a brand new mini mac and a new apple TV. Both have been updated and can see my movies in itunes. I can use Netflix and stream music. I have tried to use my old laptop and it streams video fine. But my new computer only see a spinning circle.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this test is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The "Guest User" login created by "Find My Mac" is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. -
i am trying to use pinterest on my computer. i had it installed, in the bookmark bar, it was working properly, and today it has stopped working. i have deleted it, and reinstalled, but still the same problem. please help!
It looks like that "button" is just a JavaScript with a web link. Have you tried clearing your browser's cache and cookies? Also, confirm that JavaScript is still active; there will be a setting in your brower's preferences; it's in the Security pane in some versions of Safari.

iTunes has a nasty habit of deleting the previous backup every time it does a backup. If you really have an old backup intact, there is a way to restore from it. I forget the procedure, but I'm sure you can Google it. It's a good idea to manually go into your backup directory and manually copy it over to a new name once in a while. That way iTunes won't touch it, and you can use it in an emergency such as yours.

I am trying to set up iCloud on my iPhone 4. It wants me to use an old Apple ID that I dont use any more. It won't let me change it to my current Apple ID. How can I fix this?

I would like to know what programme I need to download so I am able to play my Photo Story CD on my IMAC please? I have created these stories using my old computer. (Window XP)
The software on the CD will not run on a Mac.
You may be able to navigate through the CD and pull out the image files, however. -
I am trying to transfer older files from a Mac PowerBook G4, running system 9, printing those documents as pdf, using Acrobat 4. Then those pdf documents will transfer to my newer MacBook Air, running OSX 10, allowing me to store and use them. My problem is that Acrobat 4 no longer seems to work on the old Mac, and I don't know how to fix it. Can anyone give me some suggestions?

Using Time Machine to backup a production file server
Does anyone have any recommendations for using Time Machine to back up a production file server? Right now we have an Xserve G5 with two internal 750GB drives in a RAID1 as our main file share to about 25 users, and a large external FW800 Guardian MAXimus drive to hold our backups. Our current backup system is a custom-written version of Mike Rubel's backup system -- http://www.mikerubel.org/computers/rsync_snapshots/ -- incremental backups done with rsync and cp with hardlinks exec'd via crontab, which seems to be very similar to what Time Machine does. Unfortunately, I've been finding it difficult to find any tech specs on Time Machine as far as:
* CPU and IO priority - This is a production file server, so I'd prefer to keep this from sucking power performance from the users. Just how much CPU, and more importantly IO, should I expect it to eat?
* How often it does a backup - The best answer I've found is "always", but I wanted to know if there was a more concrete response for this. Does the system hook into the kernel to see whenever a file gets written out so it doesn't have to continually scan the entire drive?
* Command line restoration - Are there any good utilities for recovering via SSH, or am I going to have to VNC to the server and do the BS magic flying screen just to restore a file?
Message was edited by: GabetaxFor mine I have 3x500GB drives in the server, two are RAID mirror and the third is time machine backup. I just turned on time machine in system preferences and set the backup drive, and after an hour it made the first backup.
Seems to work perfectly although I have heard a couple of rumours that the mail server causes the backup to grow forever, but havnt checked this. Im staging another machine, so perhaps will try this to make sure!
I am expecting the backup will only be useful to a system administrator, and am not sure how a user logged into a shared directory account (i.e 'roaming profile') would access the backup, and somehow suspect they wont be able to just seamlessly use the slick interface as if the backup were their own.
On a 2x2Ghz G5 it didnt seem to use the full load on either the CPU or the disk the first time it was run (copied at about 9MB/sec throughout). The incremental backups are very fast, and are often completed before I realise they have started. I gather it uses Apple's own spotlight API to find changed files, so isnt like an rsync which scans entire volumes. Worth checking the exclusion filters though, no point backing up any large cache/log files you may be storing.

Why is iCal suddenly trying to use an old email address?
In the last month or so iCal keeps sending all of my alerts to an old email address. None of my alerts are set to be sent via email, much less the defunct account. This is happening at the same time that Mail refuses to send and displays the wrong content for emails.

Sure is confusing, but I think we can work it out...
If iTunes is telling you that there's an existing Apple ID with the name you're trying to change your iTunes account to, then, yup, you're probably right that you've used that email address as some other kind of Apple ID in the past...maybe for an iPod registration...or to use the support pages...any number of things).
To make things simple, let's give some fake names to the two email addresses at work here:
let's call your current iTunes account name [email protected]
let's call your other email address [email protected]
1. goto http://myinfo.apple.com and sign in using [email protected] (if the password doesn't work, try going to http://iforgot.apple.com to recover it)
2. once you're there, change the Apple ID (or account name) of that account to something other than "[email protected]". Make it something easy like "[email protected]_old", and make a note of this in case you need that Apple ID in the future.
3. save those changes. you're now done with myinfo.apple.com
4. at this point, you should be A-OK. you can now change your old account name "[email protected]" to "[email protected]".

Are you looking at the iPod's library of songs through iTunes (the songs are on the iPod, not iTunes)?
If the iPod is automatically updating, you cannot play the songs from your iPod on another computer. You would have to manually update...

If you choose to go the software route, more options are available (Search the internet via Google).
If you are automatically updating the iPod now though, and the songs are not actually on the laptop, but just on your iPod (and you see the songs on the iPod through iTunes), then you will not be able to play them on your computer. You have to put them on your computer or manually update.

App store trying to use my old apple ID - how can I make it use my new one?

I've changed my email address and created a new Apple ID. It works fine on my computer (have successfully bought music), works fine on ITunes on my iphone (again, successfully bought music), but the App store insists on my old ID (although of course it won't accept my old password.
I've logged out and back in again in Settings, and synced before and after successfully making purchases in ITunes but to no avail.
Any suggestions?I am having that exact same problem too. It locked me out of my old account for some reason, so I created a new one. I am able to log on, I recently bought music, and I changed my apple ID in the store settings in my iPhone. However, when I try to update my apps/try to buy new ones on my phone it keeps defaulting to the old one without giving an option to use a different ID. I rebooted my phone and searched for other areas that I might have to enter the new ID, but I can't find anything...
