Trying to use FaceTime in Messages, microphone is turned off

Forgive my ignorance, I just installed Mountain Lion about one hour ago.  I just discovered that I can send text messages to my daughter's iPhone from my iMac, which is something that I have wanted to do for a while.  This is good, but I asked myself, "What happens is I click on this video camera icon over here ?" and lo and behold, I was dumped into a FaceTime call with her.  Very cool. everything was working except that she couldn't hear me.  The video was working both ways, and I could hear her, but she couldn't hear me.
When I tried to call her again, I noticed on the FaceTime window that there was a "slash" across the microphone icon along the bottom, so that makes sense, I guess, the microphone is turned off somehow.  The problem is that I can't seem to find any FaceTime control or System Preference that will allow me to turn it on.
Can anyone offer me any suggestions ?
Thanks.

Anticipating the question:
In the Sound Preferences window, I have the Internal microphone selected (under the Input Tab), the input volume set at 50% and I have the Use ambient noise reduction box checked.
On the Messages Audio/Video preferences page, I also have Internal Microphone set, and I can't see anything on the FaceTime preferences that seems to deal with audio input.

  • Trying to use Internet Sharing, but it keeps turning off.

    Hello all,
Alright, so I'm in a dorm room that connects to a wired ethernet network using 802.1X authentication. My MBP does that just fine. The only problem is getting my Xbox 360 online. The Xbox does not support 802.1X authentication, and the only thing the school said I could do was use a second ethernet port on my computer and Windows ICS. Of course, I know that Apple also has an ICS type thing of it's own through Internet Sharing.
I'm using the Linksys USB200M USB-Ethernet adapter as my second ethernet port. I've tried connecting to the internet using it and it works great.
The only problem I'm getting is keeping the Internet Sharing on. Everytime I turn it on, Share FROM Built-In Ethernet, and check mark the Ethernet Adapter (en3), the thing won't stay on. I'll change them menu, go back, and it's turned off.
I've searched for an answer, which required me to delete the com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist out of Library/Preferences. This DID NOT WORK.
I would really hate to have to boot into Windows Vista to use my Xbox 360, as I have been successful doing that. I like to work in OS X more than Vista.
    Thanks for your time,
    Jake

Repair Permissions if you haven't yet, then the other file that can affect that is...
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
But it also holds all your Network info, so...
Reboot after either or both, depending what you decide.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.

  • I'm trying to use FaceTime but when I try to log in, the system tries to verify and gives me a number to call Apple to complete registration.  Is there anything I can do?

I'm trying to use FaceTime from my IMac OS Version 10.8.5 but when I try to log in, the system tries to verify and gives me a number to call Apple to complete registration.  Is there anything I can do?

There is no official public documentation of that alert as far as I know.
If you're trying to sign in to FaceTime, try to sign in to iMessage in the Messages application, or vice versa.
Otherwise, do as the alert directs. According to reports, you won't be charged for the support call if you select "Apple ID"—not the hardware model—as the product you're asking about, and cite the "customer code" in the alert as the "validation code" when you speak to the Apple representative.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum not all of us use FaceTime. There's a FaceTime Support Community where everybody uses FaceTime. Have you tried signing out of your Apple ID, restart the iPad and then start all over again?
Go to Settings>iTunes & App Stores>Apple ID. Tap the ID and sign out. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Then go back to Settings>iTunes & App Stores>Apple ID. Sign in again. Then go to Settings>FaceTime>On. See if it will stay turned on and it it does, sign in and setup.

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.

  • I have an iphone 5s and my kids have ipods. How do i set up the ipods to use facetime and messaging without it going through my iphone?

i have an iphone 5s and my kids have ipod touches. How do i set up the ipods to use facetime and messaging without it going through my iphone or rather using my apple id? Is this possible? Does each device need its own apple ID and/or icloud email?

Try unchecking your phone number and email address (if present) under You can be reached by FaceTime (iMessage) at in Settings>Messages>Send & Receive and Settings>FaceTime on their devices.  Also uncheck their email address (if present) on your phone.
Otherwise have them use separate Apple IDs for these services (tap the ID, sign out, sign back in with a different ID).  You can do this and still share the same ID for other services such as iTunes.
