Trying to use optical audio

I have a DVR (slave) connected to a computer monitor as HDMI-2. My computer is connected to this monitor as HDMI-1. When I try to watch TV on this monitor (HDMI-2), video is fine but the only sound I obtain is through the puny speakers built into the monitor. I want to be able to use the surround sound speakers connected to the computer. So, I've attempted to use the optical audio plug on the back of the DVR unit. The sound card in my computer has optical audio in and out ports. I connected a plug from the optical audio plug on the DVR unit to the optical audio "in" plug on the sound card. However it isn't working. The only sound I get continues to come from the tiny speakers inside the monitor.
Can anyone offer me advise how I can get the TV connected to HDMI-2 to use the speakers connected to the computer?

Optical audio out is enabled by default on the Verizon boxes. In fact, I don't think it can be turned off.
You most likely need to adjust a setting in your computer to make it use the optical audio input. It may be a simple as a volume slider. The exact procedure depends on your operating system, sound card and sound card driver.

When should I use "Optical Audio"?

Hello,
I have the new (3rd Gen) Apple TV connected wirelessly to my home theater and HDTV. I have the HDMI cable connected to my surround-sound receiver. I was under the impression that the HDMI cable carries both sound AND audio. If this is the case, I'm trying to figure out what the Optical Audio input is for? I went ahead and purchased an Optical Audio cable and connected it to my surround sound receiver.
My question is this: Do I need to have that Optical Audio cable connected, or should I disconnect it and just use the HDMI connection? I looked in the AppleTV manual and it does not describe why you would connect this, and I'm scratching my head trying to understand this.

Some old receivers didn't handle digital audio over HDMI very well - the only reason I can think of using the port.
If it worked without the optical before, you don't need it now!

Can I use Optical Audio alongside a speakerless monitor to play audio through speakers?

I have an Apple TV 3 and so far I am relatively pleased. However.. I have no sound, this just about renders my Apple TV useless. Is it possible to use the Optical Audio cable to play sound from films, music etc. while still having the Apple TV connected to the Monitor via HDMI? Do you have any suggestions as to what speakers would be good? (looking at around £50 - £100) I was thinking of getting some of the Bose Companion 2 monitor speakers and then using a DAC to play audio from the Apple TV to the speakers. Would this work? If not, does anybody have any other suggestions?
P.S. I can't plug speakers into my monitor for some absurd, annoying reason unbeknown to society

ATV3 not using optical audio with mirroring

MacBook Pro to the Apple TV mirroring works fine for video but not audio. The audio is from the TV speakers with mirroring but the ATV is connected to my amp and speakers via the optical audio output on the ATV3. The ATV outputs to the amp / tuner / receiver all day for the radio app in the ATV but with mirroring it sends audio to the worthless TV speakers. Any idea how to convince the ATV to send the audio to the amp with mirroring on?

So I guess MP3/AAC files are not configured to use all 5 speakers?
Yes, this is the case. They are probably just stereo files (two audio channels). It depends on your receiver/speakers just how a stereo file plays through, there may be a setting to make stereo files come through all the speakers anyway. But, the audio coming out of your Mac is just going to be stereo with those kinds of files, your audio system may be able to handle the channels differently.

How important is using optical audio, since no surround?

I'm out of optical inputs on my A/V receiver. How important is using the digital optical audio output, since there is no surround sound on the Apple TV?
Is using analog audio cables that bad, since the content on Apple TV is stereo to begin with?

I don't think the issue will be surround sound since surround sound isn't supported by the tv, although as capaho points out there are some files floating around out there that appear to work with the tv, however as far as I know these are all test files and there isn't actually any content as such available.
The issue for you will be one of quality, which of course means different things to different people. Personally I can only tell the difference between analogue and digital sound on some tunes and my personal taste in music does not always include those tunes (more of a Rolling Stones listener than Debussy) , so I'm quite happy to use analogue audio for my set up. Whether you are happy to do so will be one of personal taste.

Does anyone use Optical Audio out to connect studio monitors?

I am planning to snatch a Mac Mini as my studio upgrade. I am also planning on buying some studio monitors (as opposed to just regular speakers). I was wondering what people use to get great, accurate results for under $600. The Mini can achieve optical audio out, apparently. Are there studio monitors that use digital, optical audio as a means to connect? How do fellow Logic home studio users have their audio out set up?

Nothing but line in/out trying to use firewire audio interface

Hi all, hoping someone can help me out here. I just got and am trying to use a Behringer FAC202 firewire audio interface. It's documentation says all I have to do is plug it in and OS X is supposed to recognize it. Well it doesn't. I have no core audio control panel, and in the sound control panel all I have is the default line in/out for internal audio (I do have system sound through the built in sound card)
Anyone have an idea why the firewire device isn't showing up? I did check the firewire bus and I see:

Model: Unknown Device
Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
Connection Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec
The FAC202 is the only firewire device on the system.

I did try that and saw no luck there either, but it actually turns out that the unit may well be defective. I tried it on several macs of various makes, as well as a couple of PCs and no joy all around, so I'm sending it back for replacement.

AppleTV Optical Audio Intermittent Drops

Have AppleTV connected to a BOSE Lifestyle system via optical audio cable. Works great except audio intermittently goes out for about 2 seconds and then comes back. This is, of course, annoying. Have checked cables and all are fine. Also use optical audio from DirecTV receiver with no sound drops, so seems to be an AppleTV issue. Have tried running diagnostics and restarting AppleTV with no change. Any known fixes for this? Anyone having similar problems?

The music has since played through the optical cable for several hours without any drops. Make any sense? Indicate anything?
If the optical cable connector is loose at one end or the other, or the cable is cracked and you moved it, it could be related to that, otherwise it's probably just a coincidence. A loosely connected or defective optical cable could be a possible cause of your problems.

Apple TV to Receiver via OPTICAL AUDIO

I am trying to hook up apple TV. I reand the HDMI to a splitter and I have picture. I need to run audio to my Onkyo txsr501 receiver via the optical cable. I have tried 2 different cables and can not get audio.

You would use optical when connecting to a DVI device for video or when not using the HDMI port at all. The latter is how I've always used my ATV, as an audio-only Airplay bridge that allows my bedroom stereo to stream from my iPod Touch and iTunes on my PC.
Interesting tidbit: It is possible to output audio over DVI, such that a DVI(device)->HDMI(TV, receiver, etc) cable or a plain HDMI cable attached to the device with a DVI/HDMI adapter carries audio, and the target HDMI device won't know the difference between this DVI->HDMI connection and a normal HDMI->HDMI connection. Many PC video cards can do this. This is possible because it's a straight-through connection using exactly the same wires. Most devices won't transmit or receive audio over DVI, and that's why DVI is mainly known as the video-only connection that is compatible with HDMI.

Connecting apple tv with optical audio cables

I have a new apple tv and need to connect via dvi to hdmi on my tv. problem is the audio. I am supposed to connect via option audio but don't know which cables to purchase and where it needs to be connected to FROM apple tv.

Due to the limited number of HDMI connections on my TV I upgraded my home theater receiver to one with 4 HDMI inputs. I use it for all video and audio switching and the TV stays on one input. Much cleaner cabling as well. An HDMI switch is also an option to look at too. Be aware an automatic switching HDMI switch probably will not work due to the way the ATV sleeps (not sure with the ATV2's). You'll probably need a manual one with push buttons or a remote.
For the problem at hand, first you need to know what audio input you need with the DVI in on your TV before we can help. To start with you are going to be using optical audio out from the ATV, a Toslink cable out of the ATV to be precise. If your TV's DVI connection matches up to a Toslink digital input that's all you need.
More than likely it has a single RCA jack which would be a Digital Coax in. In this case you will need a Digital Toslink to Digital Coaxial converter as well as a Digital Coax cable. The Coax cable can be a simple audio cable with RCA jacks.
If the DVI on the TV matches up with an analog in, usually red and white RCA jacks, you are going a Digital Toslink to an analog L/R stereo converter. And of course the RCA stereo cable.

Anyone using M-Audio FireWire Solo for iChat audio output?

Audio output for iChat works perfectly through my G5 internal speaker but does not work through my FireWire Solo. It yields 100% digital distortion everytime the person on the other end speaks. Everything else in my setup works beautifully with my M-Audio device (Logic, Pro Tools, Reason, iTunes and all other applications).

I do not use M-Audio or any of the other things you post about except iChat AV, and iChat AV does NOT work through my DP G5's internal speaker.

(0) When using iSight or iChat AV, you may be experiencing Possible hardware or software conflicts. This link gives tips for investigating that possibility.

I had this set up done with two representatives of Neumann, and DBox. Here it is I hope this helps. 32 Channel snake (24 Inputs 8 outputs) Channels 1-8 from snake to my Octopre for Drums. From Octropre output quarter inch lines into the Apollo 2, quarter inch input. This is so that the Apollo 2 is taking the drum tracks. Snake Channel 9-12 into Apollo 1 channels 1-4 xlr. Snake Channel 13-16 into Apollo 2 Channels 1-4 xlr. Snake Channel 17 into the 737, output of 737 into Channel 5 of the Apollo 1 quarter inch.
Ok The Dbox. Sum output L&R into channel input 7&8 of Apollo 1. Apollo 1 output channels 1-8 into summing input channel 1-8 of Dbox. Apollo 1 main L&R going to main analog input L&R of Dbox. Spid out to DAW input of Dbox. I have both ADAT of both Apollos connected by optical wire. Also have port 2 of Apollo 1 into port 1 of Apollo 2 connected by Firewire. Let me know. How do I connect the Apple TV to the home theater if the optical audio port is in use

I had an airport express connected from the home theater system to the speaker out port on the express through which air play worked just fine. Then the express wouldn't work with my new router so I looked for something to replace it. The new Airport Express was the same price as the Apple TV and so I went with it for the added HDMI from NetFlix benefits. Now I find that the cables I used on the express won't work on the Apple TV. It wants an optical cable but there is only one port on the speakers and it is needed to get the sound from the TV to the speakers. So, is here a work around? An adapter or something? What I really wanted it for more than anything else was to use air play to get my music from the computer to the theater speakers.

I have a further question about this. It turns out I do have 2 optical audio ports but I was told I wouldn't need it if it was connected via hdmi. I have 4 ports and they are all in use so the question is whether the best solution is to just get an optical audio cable and connect it directly or get an hdmi splitter so I can add in the Apple TV?

Make sure all of the videos used in the project that is having that problem are from the same event. If they are from multiple events, move them all into one event.
