Trying to view pdf version of school textbook in Safari

Hi- I am trying to view the online version of our class science textbook (grade 12 Science-Toronto, Canada) - we have registered it and have the correct user name and password- but keep getting an error 403 message when we try to view the pdf (http://glencoe.com/sec/science/ose/)-
The links and password work on our Windows NT computers but not on our Macs (10.4) fully updated etc.-
I have tried various combinations with and without the Schubert plug-in, Adobe plugin, Opera, IE, Firefox- followed the threads here on viewing PDFs, but all to no avail-
the textbook tech support people were of little help , though they suggested the Schubert plugin (PDF Browser Plugin). They claim Safari 2, in 10.4 should work fine-
I am open to any suggestions- having an online version of a text is a great option for our students as we simply can not afford text books for every student-
Admittedly not many of our students have macs at home, they mostly have Windows, but it would be great for them to have the choice at school when they need to catch up in the library etc.
Thanks in advance for any help

Thanks for the reply- but we are not actually hosting the online text- the publisher of the text book ( in the states) is doing that-
I have tried IE, Firefox, Safari, Opera on the mac- but no luck
our windows computers have no problems at all access the pdf-
I have encountered many websites that are not fully functional via a Mac browser but work just fine under the various microsoft/windows browsers-
maybe its my imagination, but more and more websites these days seem less and less "compatible" with Mac browsers- for example I tried downloading some software for a Kodak easyshare digicam yesterday- the page would not load properly in Safari or Opera, but appeared fully intact on the windows NT IE browser- I could go on with other examples but that is not the purpose of this forum-
I am still open to suggestions on how to access the online version of a school text in Safari
thanks
Parrish

    For some reason safari 5.0.5 freezes & crashes when trying to view pdf
    Any ideas how to fix this issue?

    Hi
    that's usually due to a plug-in over-riding Safari's built-in pdf support.
    Quit any browsers & remove any 'pdf...' plugins from either of these folders

  • Why am I getting an error message trying to view pdf files.

    When trying to open any pdf file, I have just started getting this message"
    The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a Web Browser. Please exit Adobe Acrobat/Reader and exit your Web Browser and try again.
    Why. I have made no change in my system that I know of. I get this message in IE8 or Firefox. I have Windows XP  Professional SP3. PC computer with plenty of RAM and Intel dual processors. So what is the deal. Why the message, I have not turned on Adobe Acrobat/Reader, so why am I being told to shut it down? Why have I never had the problem regardless of browser I use before?

    This is incredible. This problem has been going on for years according to the messages on this forum. Adobe? Are you listening? One person had 247,000+ views to her message. Exact same problem I am having today. Here is the error message in case the Adobe programmers have all gone to sleep.
    The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a Web Browser. Please exit Adobe Acrobat/Reader and exit your Web Browser and try again.
    When are you going to let us know what the fix is Adobe????

  • Error message when trying to view PDF files online

    When attempting to view pdf files I get the following error message:
    There is a problem with adobe acrobat/reader. If it is running, please exit and try again. (507:507) Per instructions found in the forum, I have reinstalled and made sure that the box for viewing pdfs online is checked. I am still getting the error message.

    Please let me know the following:
    1. The version of Adobe Reader on your system. You can get the same by clicking on Help > About Adobe Reader.
    2. The OS you are working on.
    3. The browser being used to render the PDF.

  • I have have yahoo email and got a message from yahoo that a new version was coming when  i tried to get new version it said i needed safari 5 how to get it?

    I have Yahoo mail. I got an email that they are upgrading site.so I tried to get the new version. When I did they gave me a message that i needed Safari 5.  When I went to Safari to download it on my ipad it was grey.  I am afraid I will not be able to access my email. What should I do?

    You can set up your Yahoo mail account in Settings.  Once you've filled out the information, you can access your mail via the Mail app on the iPad, instead of via Safari.

  • Sometimes PDDocSaveWithParams does not change PDF version

    Hi,
    In a plug-in we are changing document properties like, Initial view, Page layout, Fast web view, pdf version etc, it is working fine most of the time, But for some documents it is not changing version backwards i mean, if the original file version is 1.5, it can change to 1.6 but does not changing to 1.4, why it is happening so, where could be the problem?
    part of that code is given below for your reference
    PDDocGetVersion( pdDoc, &asiMajor, &asiMinor );
    asiMajor = 1;
    asiMinor = 4;
    PDDocSaveParamsRec pdDocSaveParams;
    ProgressMonitorRec pMonitor;
    pdDocSaveParams.saveFlags=PDSaveLinearized|PDSaveFullPDSaveCollectGarbage ;
    pdDocSaveParams.newPath= asPath;
    pdDocSaveParams.fileSys=ASGetDefaultFileSys();
    pdDocSaveParams.mon=NULL;
    pdDocSaveParams.monClientData=NULL;
    pdDocSaveParams.cancelProc=NULL;
    pdDocSaveParams.cancelProcClientData=NULL;
    pdDocSaveParams.major=asiMajor;
    pdDocSaveParams.minor=asiMinor;
    PDDocSaveWithParams(pdDoc,&pdDocSaveParams);

    You can do it like this:
    _t_PDDocSaveParams sp;
    memset(&sp,0,sizeof(_t_PDDocSaveParams));
    sp.size = sizeof(_t_PDDocSaveParams);
    sp.saveFlags = PDSaveFull;
    sp.major = 1;
    sp.minor = 4;
    sp.newPath = [some pathName];
    sp.saveFlags2 = PDSaveUncompressed; // <------ This will do the trick!
    PDDocSaveWithParams([your pdDcoc], &sp);
    This was tested with the SDK of Acrobat 9

  • Viewing pdf and jpg in safari

    I've been trying to figure out how to view PDF's and JPGs directly in safari rather than having them download and then need to open them.  Suggestions?

    That should happen automatically in most cases, although it depends on how the web server is set up.

  • Viewing pdf files-says "missing plug-in"

    Hello,
    I am trying to view pdf files that I have viewed before with no problem using my macbook pro.  Only now I am getting a message that says "missing plug-in."  I checked for and installed some updates just to be sure.  There were none for any plug-ins any way, and I am still having the problem.  Any suggestions?

    Hi s,
    I recommend to people to download Flash, Perian, Flip4Mac, and VLC. That normally takes care of internet plug ins and playing most file types.
    Have you tried the built in Preview app?

  • Viewing PDFs in Safari in 64-bit mode - how?

    For me, in 64 bit mode, Safari insists on using Preview to view PDFs (and which is slow and clunky).
    If I make Safari downgrade itself to 32 bit mode, it properly calls up Acrobat to view PDFs.
    How can I have Safari running in native 64 bit mode and call up Acrobat to view PDFs on webpages? Or is it not possible?

    If you have Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat Pro installed, the plugin they install to view PDF files in Safari is not 64-bit compatible. Aside from that, unless you have more than 4 GB of RAM installed in your machine, you will not benefit in any way from running Safari or any other application in 64-bit mode, so you should be running everything in 32-bit mode.
    Because Safari is perfectly capable of rendering PDF files on it's own, you need to ditch Adobe Reader or Acrobat Pro, or at the very least, deactivate them so they are not called when you want to view a PDF file. To do that:
    Quit Safari if it's running.
    Start Adobe Reader and/or Acrobat Pro.
    Go to Preferences > Internet and uncheck the box at the top where it says "Display PDFs in browser using:", or something similar to that.
    Quit Adobe Reader and/or Acrobat Pro and restart Safari to test it.

  • When trying to generate pdf file from firefox 7.0.1 , getting corrupt content error, used to work with previous versions of firefox

    We have done toleration testing on firefox version 5 thru 6 and haven't got an issue with our website generating pdf files for our users. One of our users upgraded to firefox version 7.0.1 and they tried to generate a pdf report, now a screen pops up with Corrupted Content Error The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because an error in the data transmission was detected. I recreated this issue on my pc yesterday by installing firefox 7.0.1. Any hints as to what I need to look at would help. Cannot provide the url because it is a secure website for law enforcement. Thanks.

    You can turn off compatibility checking, but more and more of the Google Toolbar will not work. Google is no longer supporting the Google Toolbar so you should use the alternatives.
    Hi Mark,
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_Google_Toolbar_features_without_toolbars
    If you have an aspect that is not covered, indicate what that is; otherwise, expect you to be fully functional within 1-2 weeks.
