...decide. I'm a bit overwhelmed with picking out a Mac. I'm in college for multimedia design (graphic/audio/video), so I wanted to buy a mac to help me expand my skills. I have built my own pc but after having to deal with PC's for many years and knowing how to build them, my own PC just doesn't do what I want and neither has the power to do what a Mac does. I was thinking of a Mac Mini since I am a college student and can take advantage of the student discount and because Mac Mini would be perfect for the size of my deskspace... but I'm not sure if its capable of doing what a G5 or actual desktop can do. Can someone tell me what I would lose if I were to buy a Mac Mini verses an actual full display desktop like G5 or iMac?

I don't have any personal experience with the new Intel Mac Mini's. But, from what I have seen of the benchmarks, the lower-end Mac Mini (Core Solo) should be comparable to the older PowerPC systems.
With that said, my Mac Mini (PPC) will handle video work, but definitely not in a comfortable fashion.
I've found that when importing video, that there is the occasional dropped-frame. This is something that is not a problem with the more powerful G5 systems that I have owned in the past.
The weak points that I see in the Mac Mini are it's slower hard drives (5400 R.P.M.) and slower CPU.
The CPU in the CoreDuo should be up to the task of handling Video quite pleasantly. But, I would say you should thoroughly test a CoreSolo before buying it to make sure that it can keep-up without dropping frames.
You will also want a minimum of 1 GB of RAM and preferably 2 GB for heavy video work.
I have 1 GB in mine, and find that it is still a bit tight on occasion (mainly with video work). I had 2 GB in my G5 system, and that was very comfortable.
Overall, I would strongly recommend either a G5 or a CoreDuo if you plan on working with video.
I wish I still had a G5, but I had so much trouble with the iMac G5 systems (I owned 2 different revisions) that I decided to sell them and wait for the PowerMac replacements to come out. Meanwhile, I'll struggle by with my Mac Mini.
So, if you specifically want to know if a Mac Mini would do the job, then I would say: It is capable, but not ideal for heavy video work. If you want to use a Mini, then I would suggest a CoreDuo with 1 GB (preferably 2 GB) of RAM, and specifically request a 7200 R.P.M. hard drive.
In that configuration, I think I would be reasonably comfortable. But, then you are up near the price of the iMac CoreDuo which is faster, has a larger 7200 R.P.M. hard drive already, and better graphics system.
So, with all that in mind, I would say it would be a choice between an expanded Mac Mini, or an entry level iMac CoreDuo. Keep in mind that even with an iMac, you are still going to want 1 or 2 GB of RAM.
But, you will get much more for your money with an iMac.

HT203164 help! i am using itunes 10.6.1.7 and windows vista 64. itunes will no longer burn cds. i have searched online and tried all i saw that could possibly fix it and it is still not working.

i have tried:
reloading itunes
unchecking 'write'
removing lower filters in regedit
ensuring i had the correct 'gear' info in the upper filters in regedit
removing 'gear' from regedit, system32
reloading updated version of 'gear'
cleaning my registery
deleting itunes
cleaning registry again
reloading itunes
cleaning registry again
i still cannot burn cd. t i can import and play cds in itunes and i can watch dvds. itunes will just not burn to blank cds, and i have tried sever new blank cds, each is not recognized.
i do not know what else to do, i have searched the internet and whatever i saw doable i tried.
when i check the cd drive in itunes i had gotten a 4220 error, cnet advised to download a free error fixer, however, this error fixer gave me and enduser message, so that didn't work.
the diagnostic for the cd burner read that i had to put in a formatted disc with content so i did and there are the results of that were that it read the cd and that the 4220 errir code was encountered last time there was an attempt to burn.
and 'could not open cd handler 32. there is a problem with the installation of the drive in windows or the drive contains a copyprotected cd.
the above is not the case as it also popped up for me to import cd to itunes.
i tried to copy and past the entire contents here but it would not allow me to paste.

I too have only recently encountered this problem. I have been able to burn disks before but it keeps making all these weird sounds. It might be a hardware problem but the fact that everything else that uses a disk works I doubt it.

I tried to install latest OS update. Recd error installing. IT tried to load the upgrade in Safe Mode. Now system will not boot up. IT says I have to do a clean install which loses all data.

After receiving an error when I try to install the latest update of OS-X, I took my laptop to oour schools IT dept. They tried to run the update in safe mode and then they got an error saying the system could not find the hard drive. Now they want to run a clean install which loses 1000's of docs and pictures. I have Block I exams in med school next Monday and all of my notes and slides are on that hard drive.
The IT dept took the hard drive out and tried to back it up and they said they other computer could not connect or find my hard drive.
Major panic....
I have Norton antivirus and have never found any viruses on the system. I also have a program called ExamSoft which some other students here have noted they had similar crashes. Not sure if that is the issue...

Several take home messages here:
always back up before you update.
always back up anything you don't want to lose. Kind of like flossing. Only floss the teeth you don't want to lose.
Norton is very, very bad software, and you should get rid of it.
You don't need antivirus software on your mac. Antivirus software on macs causes more trouble than it is worth.
Your hard drive may be failing and thus may not be salvageable.
You could try booting into the recovery partition and seeing if you can repair your hard drive.
If that doesn't work, then there is a small chance that a third party utility (like Disk Warrior or TechTool) might be able to fix your drive (if it is not failing).
If that doesn't work, you may be able to send your drive and a lot of cash to a drive recovery service and see if they can get your files off it.
In the mean time, get notes and slides from a (smart) friend.

Adobe cloud tries to load addon which I have deleted in Extension manager

when Adobe Cloud starts it tries to load an application (Edge FX lite) that I have deleted in Adobe Extension Manager cc. I get the error message ' unable to install the addon EdgeFX lite error 603. How do I stop this?
Also in Adobe Exchange in 'My Stuff' there are showing addons which I have removed in Adobe extension Manager cc which I would like to be removed from this listing as I will never use them, but if I right click to uninstall I fail to get rid of them.

1) Go to https://creative.adobe.com/addons/
2) In the top right hand corner select sign in and enter your Adobe ID and password
3) Once logged in, on the center of the screen at the left hand side, select the link 'All your purchases and shared items'
4) You will then be taken to a page that is the equivalent of your My Stuff panel.
5) You can then install individual add-ons/extensions.

IPhone 5 - Voice Memos won't sync.. Tried EVERYTHING!

I have alot of Voice memo recordings of classes and lectures that I need on my computer.
The last time memos successfully synced was in February, and even then, not ALL of the memos synced, only some of them.
I have the "sync" memos tab checked but nothing happens now.
I have even deleted the iTunes playlist - Voice Memos in despiration (i backed the synced ones) and tried to get iTunes to recreate the playlist and hopefully let it re-sync the others still on my phone - but no!
I have iTunes & iPhone up to date so it's not an issue of old software.
The files are also way to big to "share" from the iPhone as some are about an hour or so long.
If Apple has no answer to this, can anyone reccommend a 3rd party app/software that can drag the files from my phone?

I got a way around it. It's a bit long but works. Email the memo to yourself and then download it. Then open it on itunes and find it inside the Music folder (top left). Then copy and place it wheneve you want. It's the only way I could managed to move them from the memo library to my prefered playlist (despite ticking the include voice memos box). For some anowying reason memos are not allowed to be moved around!

Installation problem on Power PC G3, 450MHz OS 9.2 trying to install OS10.4

When I try to install, I get the dialog box: Mac OSX cannot be installed on this computer. Please consult the documentation for the list of supported computers. From what I can tell, I should be able to install on this computer; it appears on the list. In the System's Profile it says: FireWire 2.8.6: no device on this bus. Is that the problem? Can I do something to update the computer so it will accept the OSX? If I have to do a clean install, could someone please tell me how to do it?

Thanks for the info. It looks like that is the answer to the problem but it'll be a while before I can do the Firmware update I think. The computer I'm trying to update isn't on line yet (it's been moved from one room that was wired to one that isn't, so now I have to get an Airport card and adaptor for it - which is obsolete, I've got to check out eBay for it. It just keeps getting more fun! Kind of like "If you give a mouse a cookie..." Although, I suppose I could download it on the the main computer and then burn it to a disc and then install it on the other iMac. New question: will that work?

IMac running 10.7.3 stuck on rainbow wheel right after desktop launches and google chrome trying to restore a previous browsing session

Hello All - thanks in advance for your help with this.
The problem I'm encountering is on an iMac 24" from 2008, Intel Core 2Duo 1.3 GHz processor. I'm running 10.7.3 but have yet to install the client combo update.
My computer would not wake from sleep this morning after having been left on all night. The last two apps I had been running last night before this morning's freeze up were Google Chrome and iTunes. I restarted the computer and noticed at the login screen that one of the login accounts that is normally set up for use had disappeared. Once I logged in to my account, which had not disappeared, and arrived at the desktop, Chrome automatically tried to relaunch and restore the previous session with a note indicating that the browser had not been quit properly.
iTunes was running as well but had no functionality - non responsive to mouse click commands, etc. About thirty seconds later the rainbow wheel appeared and began spinning.
Tried force quitting both applications applications respectively but the finder was non-responsive as well. The dock would pop up when moused over but I was not permitted to select any of the icons. Restarted the computer and essentially the same thing occurred but I was able to quit out of iTunes this time before the rainbow wheel started.
Tried restarting with all peripheral hardware disconnected. No change. Tried booting up in safe mode - didn't work. Rebooted in disk utility mode - ran disk verification and was told all was well. Ran permissions verifications and was told there were problems. Repaired the permissions issues successfully. Rebooted again but same issue with desktop/apps freezing up. Rebooted into Disk Utility mode and tried a reinstall of lion - reinstall successul but upon normal reboot desktop still frozen once I launched Chrome and attempted to get to apple site to download the 10.7.3 patch.
Tried rebooting in disk utility mode to restore from a time machine back up - the external hard drive where my back ups are stored did not appear as a restore source even though I had reconnected the USB cable.
I then rebooted again into disk utility mode and tried to use safari to navigate to the apple site and download the 10.7.3 client combo update. No dice - received error messages saying the download could not be completed because there was insufficient memory available.
Called Apple - rep said I should take the computer in to the store - refused as of the time of the call because I had already wasted half the day on this and didn't want to flush the remainder down the toilet hanging around at the Apple store. So much for that - the day is now totally wasted any way.
Another couple of bits of information which may or may not be helpful:
When I'm in disk utility mode the disk image icon at the top of the list of disk images/mounts on the left hand side of the utility window is in red text: 320.07 GB WDC WD320...and the main dialogue box says: "This drive has a hardware problem that can't be repaired. Back up Data and see Apple dealer for help." One might conclude that my computer is therefore dead...not exactly. This happened once before after trying to set up a bootcamp partition using XP instead of windows 7. XP is not supported by Lion but I was trying a work around. Soon thereafter I upgraded my OS to 10.7.2 (or.3 can't remember) using software updater instead of a full native download from the Apple Support site and the computer went bananas. After the upgrade I was getting the CUI ???? errors which have since become infamous. While working with Apple phone support on the CUI issue and using disk utility on that issue, that same red text disc image came up and the note about my hardware having failed as described above. Apple told me I was cooked and my machine was finished. They were wrong. I can't remember what I did but I worked on the problem a bit more and was eventually able to upgrade my OS from the native download and get my machine back in order and runnign fine.
I recently attempted the bootcamp partition (stupidly) work around for XP again without success - last week before all of the latest drama set in. YES I have learned my lession and will not attempt this again.
So that's what's going on - sorry for the Moby Dick lenght description but I figured the more details available the more likely some one is to know how to fix the problem.

Phone stalls when trying to update or delete account

I've had problems with my 5c since updating the software (now running 7.1.2). My main issue is that I can't toggle any of the settings on my mail/calendar accounts (combination of Google and Exchange) or my iCloud account. Whenever I toggle one of the settings (such as "Notes") I get a grey "spinning wheel of doom" square on my screen with the message "Updating Your Settings..." The square remains on the screen forever--the update never happens. Same thing when I try to delete an account.
What I've tried so far:
Restarting my phone
Resetting the network
Restoring factory defaults

Same problem here. IMDB, TWC (weather app) Goodreader… Started this morning, out of the blue.
After deleting IMDB (hoping to reinstall), that app cannot be installed again! Trying to, gets you the same “Update unavailable” error.
Also, the problematic apps are not listed in my “Purchased” list (which is the real problem I think).
I also tried through iTunes. Same problem.
Can someone confirm that the problem apps are not showing in your purchased list?
I don’t know if it’s on Apple’s side (in which case it will get fixed) or on my side (meaning I will have to do something).
