TS: Pre-installed Windows 8.1 attempt to install windows 7.

Greeting,
I recently get a Dell laptop with pre-installed Windows 8.1, but I find out there are many compatibility issues on Windows 8.1. So I decided to install Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit into the system without wipe out the windows 8.1. I followed a lot of threads
through the web. I am be able to finally solve the GPT booting stuff and get into the installation page, BUT there is another problem comes up. I cannot find a solution on the internet. The installation cannot be started because there
is not enough required space for the window 7 to be installed.
I have 100 GB partition of  free space for the window to installed, so I believe it is the
System Reserved Space that makes the problem. However, I have not find a way to resize it no matter I use the third party tool or not, because it is
GPT Style.
Is there any way that I could install window 7 without wipe out the window 8.1??
I really need to use the windows 7 since most of my software that I use is not compatible with windows 8.1.
Thanks
CK

I believe in theory you could install Win7 to a partition this way using an answer file. A problem would be that the OS won't boot if you deploy it using Setup by default. You would have to add a boot entry to the BCD for Win8.1 using BCDEdit, so that you
can have a dual-boot system.
What I would do instead is in Win 8.1 you can burn your recovery media. After doing so, you could do a clean install with Windows 7 and if needed you could reload Windows 8.1 using the recovery DVD.

  • Pre-installed Windows Media?

Does the iMac (10.5.1) come with any Windows Media programs/files, etc. pre-installed? This question is asked because TechTool Pro 4.6.1 identifies minor problems with files in this area. I installed Windows Media upon the first day of using the iMac, and I recall that the installation didn't proceed smoothly --- and I'm now using RealAudio Player. I'd like to uninstall all files/programs related to Windows Media (and possibly attempt reinstallation from scratch at some later date).
What I'd like to know is if any of the Windows Media files should be left on the HD.
Does typing "media" in the Finder "Search" identify all that is associated with Windows Media?

The Mac doesn't come pre-installed with anything Windows Media related, no.
In fact, Windows Media Player is no longer supported (or even distributed) by Microsoft. It's not a universal binary either. They provide a link so you can get Telestream's Flip4Mac for free. I'd recommend trying/using that rather than using WMP or Real -- go to the WMP site and you'll see a download link.

  • Windows 8.1 pre-installed , your windows license will expire soon?!?!

I just updated my Windows today when they prompted and asked me to update it and restart the laptop. After updating and restarting, the laptop suddenly notifies me that my windows license will expire soon and I will need to activate it in the pcsettings.
It then brings me to a page with two choices, activate windows online or enter new product key. I tried both options but the first one won't work and the second one requires a product key which I have no idea what it is. When I look at my system information, it says that my windows 8.1 is activated.
By the way, my windows 8 is pre-installed on the laptop. Please help, I am a complete newbie in the technology field!

  • I can't activate windows 8.1 pre-installed on my Toshiba E45-B4200 after BIOS Update

I bought Toshiba laptop Model E45-B4200, at first time I could activate windows 8.1 like a charm.
Few months later Windows 8.1 has crashed, so I did clean install of pre-installed windows, no problem so far. Toshiba Application installer app has downloaded BIOS update, so I ran it.
I tried to activate windows after BIOS update, but it didn`t work. No error message, but Change PC settings window just got minimized every time that I tried to click on Activate Windows option. I thought that I did some mistake, so I repeated windows reinstallation, and same problem occurred again.
Now I can`t update Windows, Office 2013, and so on.
I`ve tried SLUI 4 command to force activation by phone, but it didn`t work as well.
I read on MS blogs that windows 8.1 stores product key on MSDM table, windows should be activated normally. Now I got no options now, can you help me?

It shouldn't need to be activated it. Everything should be automatic. Because it's asking you, that's already indicative of a problem. You might want to call customer support.

  • How can I dual-boot Windows 7 with pre-Installed Windows 8.1

    Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite C55-B5362 with pre-installed Windows 8.1.
Make DualBoot Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 (both 64 bit), so, I don't know how to do this. If I set BIOS to CMOS and Install Windows 7 disabling Secureboot, I will lost all the pre-installed Windows 8.1 and the OEM licence.
and other question... if the upper is not possible. Okay. I will delete Windows 8.1 and Install Windows 7 permanently until Windows 10 is released, but.... If I have Windows 7 with CMOS BIOS and SecureBoot disabled, then supposing that I could have problems with Windows 7, and I want to upgrade to Windows 8.1 again, and supposing that I have a Recovery Partition backed in a USB drive, what can I do for re-install OEM Windows 8.1 and the licence.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    As I said above...
..you will need to install essentially all of them to make that laptop work as designed.
..install the TVAP before any other Toshiba utility.

  • Dual booting pre-installed Windows 8 and Linux?

I just bought a G780 with Windows 8 pre-installed. Ideally, I would also like to install some flavor of Linux. I've been searching but not finding much info on how difficult or time-consuming this would be, or if there are any special considerations or anything. I've found some guides on dual-booting Windows 8 and Linux but they were all for installing Windows straight from a disk, not anything where it's already pre-installed, and some indicated they thought it might be problematic to use a pre-installed version of Windows. Anyway I was hoping that if anybody has done this on the G780 or even a similar laptop that you could share how it went and any difficulties you encountered. I'm open to using any Linux distro if it'll be easy to install. I would appreciate any info you could share. Thanks.

I had issues with Windows 8 as pre-installed on my G580, my employer at the time was using Windows 7 only and would not allow upgrades for security purposes.  I deleted the entire drive (including hidden) knowing at some point I would re-install Windows 8 or later from retail disk when needed.
Linux can resize partitions during the install process, but be careful not to disturb the hidden partition or the windows boot loader in the process.  Linux Mint is the best yet for this purpose, OpenSUSE and Fedora failed, CentOS failed and Ubuntu was not able to boot, but did not "hurt" the windows partitions.
    Good luck.

    Hi,
I think it is quite difficult to install Windows 7 overriding the pre-installed Operation System without formatting the hard disk.
Because as you descripted in the post, your computer is booted with a UEFI firm ware, but your hard drive is not configured for UEFI mode, you cannot just convert one partition, you have to format the whole hard disk for
UEFI by using the GPT partition style, this lets your use the PC’s UEFI firmware feature, more details can be found at :
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-au/library/dn336946.aspx
All data should be backed up before you install Windows 7 to override the pre-installed Operation System.

  • I need to reactivate windows after a full restore on a winodws 8 pre-installed computer?

Hi everybody. I got a computer last christmas (2012) and it was pre-installed with windows 8.
As something happened to my computer (all metro apps stop working, inclusive settings, scince it's a metro app) I decided to make a full system restore. When I finally were able to find how (Without using settings) i did it.
Now I have a Clean computer with windows 8 but it says I have not registered windows 8! As I'm pretty used to computers, I looked for the serial number under my computer. I thought I found it (Teh number after S/N) but it wasn't that. (Some of the numbers
were not usable in a activation key, such as L and W) As I go into computer info, i see a code which looks like this: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX, but then I get to the wierd part. "This Product key is already used on Another computer, Try with Another
key or try again. And when I try again 0 can't be used...
Can somebody please help me? I can't understand why windows need to be reactivated after a full system restore on a windows 8 pre-installed computer...

    Hi,
    Please try the following method:
    1. Press WIN+R, then it will prompt RUN dialog.
    2. type “slui 4”, and press Enter.
    3. Following the direction to activate your system.
If problem persists, as Arnav Sharma mentioned,I would like to suggest you to contact Microsoft Product Activation Center by telephone to verify the product key and activate your system.
To start the Product Activation Wizard, follow these steps:
    1. At the Start screen, swipe in from the right side, or hover your mouse in the upper-right corner of the screen to display the charms menu.
    2. Tap or click the Settings charm.
    3. Tap or click Change PC Settings.
    4. If your PC is not activated, PC Settings will provide instructions that are customized to your activation error. If telephone support can provide help for your error, tap or click the appropriate link, which may resemble one of the following:
    a. Activate
    b. Activate by phone

  • Suspecting my windows 8.1 OS pre installed notebook

I purchased my notebook on 29-06-2015 With pre installed Windows 8.1. But I didn't find the genuine software label on my notebook. But the retailer told that the software is original. How can I believe with out label. My product ID: M9V07PA#ACJ. Serial no:[Moderator edited Serial]. Warranty: 1y1y0y. Model: 15-ac047TU.

Hello, Thank you for posting in the HP Support Forum. What you were told is correct. Microsoft changed their mind/policies and since Windows 8 (8.1 +) there are no stickers/labels/COAs no more. The product keys are built inside the computers and the machine will only have a Windows logo. http://www.cnet.com/news/windows-8-moves-to-bios-based-product-keys/ For your information, you can also read these two articles:https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2806745http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/genuine/faq

SW such as Cyberlink youcam is working, but media suite is not. It downloads and installs, but all features are locked and have buy now under them. I want to know if I can somehow link my win 8 key or notebook to the  software  that used to work fully for me. Another problem with the  synaptics touchpad driver I reverted to is that it says (evaluation copy )  in settings. The HP pre instaled software doesnt seem to able to see Im a valid owner of it due to  windows 10. Im sure if I reverted back to 8 it would all work, but I would like to use it on 10. Is there any way to fix this ?Anyone else having similar problem ?

IMNSHO, always go with a 64 bit OS.  With Win 7 32 you will probabaly be able to use all of your RAM, but if you add more RAM at some point you won't be able to use it without going to a 64 bit OS.
A 32 bit system can address 4G of address space but Windows tends to reserve the top 1G (more or less) for addressing installed (and future) peripheral devices and graphics card RAM.  Any RAM above ~3G simply goes to wast.

  • Windows 10 not accepting pre-installed Windows 7 key

I have an Acer laptop which came with windows 7. I installed Windows 10 from an ISO provide by the Microsoft web page due to the length of time I was waiting for my  upgrade notification. The Install went fine but I am concerned that Windows 10 is now refusing to accept the Windows 7 license key I got with my pre-installed laptop. If I had waited for the upgrade notification I'm sure the upgrade would not have asked for the key and the OS would be happy.    So, what can I do now?

It is confusing.  I took the safe route and just went through Windows update.  But the article in Link below says you can use iso.  I don't know because I didn't try it and didn't want to risk it......because I didn't want to cough up $100 for windows 10 license if things went bad. https://www.thurrott.com/windows/windows-10/5008/windows-10-tip-associate-your-pc-with-your-free-windows-10-license Maybe try creating a Microsoft account????? and it will activate??? I guess you could always use your Windows 7 recovery discs that you made prior to updating to Windows 10 and just start over. Or is erecovery still availble on your computer???? http://community.acer.com/t5/Knowledge-Base/Windows-7-Recovery-options/ta-p/59667 worst case scenario is you can buy erecovery from acer store (if you forgot to make recovery discs) to get windows 7 back on your computer and then go through windows update to get Windows 10 (and save $50).  But I would exhaust all other methods before I went down the worst case scenario path. http://store.acer.com/store/aceramer/html/pbPage.globalStoreSelector/ThemeID.35703000

  • GT70 Dragon Edition How to recover my Pre-installed windows 8

I have this GT70 Dragon Edition, and i accidentally messed up with it. I was just playing around with the bios and tried to separate the Super Raid 0 of two 128GB Msata, coz im planning to upgrade it in to two 512 in the future.. Unfortunately i accidentally deleted that partition and lost the files in it.  So my Laptop doesnt load windows 8 anymore.. I tried the F3 Recovery tool, but it's not functioning. I then installed Windows 7 64bit and run in Legacy boot mode.. While installing the Windows 7 It appears that there's this Disk 1 Partition 2: BIOS_RVY (total Size)21.0GB, ( free space)3GB , OEM Reserved. As i read from other posts. This is where your windows 8 Product Key and etc. are stored. So Please help me restore My Windows 8 coz i really like it and i chose this laptop because of the Pre-installed Windows 8(less expenses).

I really hate saying this, but most likely the only way to get the disks is to either send the laptop back for MSI to reinstall the factory software, or perhaps purchase the restore disks from MSI, if they sell them.
    >>How to contact MSI.<<
I just downloaded a WINDOWS 8 ISO from the Internet and managed to install it. So im using my Windows 8 now.. but the problem is, it's not activated and some pre-installed software from MSI are gone. is there any way to recover my FILES from the BIOS_RVY Partition coz i can see it in the DISK MANAGEMENT and when i right click it, it only shows "Help"
