TS1317 Self assigned IP adress on G5 won't let me connect to internet.

I received a G5 mac tower version 10.3.2. When I try to connect to the internet it won't let me and says that it already has an assigned IP address. I have tried many tips from multiple forms with changing it manually, $ infront of the password, nothing works. I have restarted my router multiple times and still nothing. Any help would be great! Thank you.

As you seem to want to replace broken Windows XP with a Linux distro, please allow me to suggest [[http://www.zegeniestudios.net/ldc]] that could help you select the right one according to your needs.
Most if not all distros allow you to download CD images that you can use.
You can do all this on one of the laptops that have connectivity.
Hope this helps, if not please get back with any further questions you might have.

  • My MacBook is self-assigning its IP address (and won't let it go)

My MacBook is generally well-behaved, but at times (seemingly random times), it self-assigns an IP address when it should be getting one from a router. The problem is sporadic and occurs in two separate locations - home (where I have control of the wireless router) and school (where I have no control over the router).
Sometimes I come home from school, and I have no problem connecting to my WLAN (2Wire router). Sometimes, however, I get the dreaded "self-assigned IP address" message, and I cannot thereafter get an "un-self-assigned" IP address. I have tried renewing the DHCP lease - no luck. I have tried trashing com.apple.airport.preferences.plist, and although that has worked on occasion, usually it doesn't solve the problem. Even more maddening is that rebooting doesn't help. Nothing consistently solves the problem - and that is so much more annoying than the problem itself!
At school I have this same problem and more. The school network SSID is not broadcast, so AirPort seems not to be able to remember it. Every single time, despite the fact that I've asked it to "remember this network," I have to type in the SSID and WEP in order to join the network. Sometimes it works quickly, and sometimes it won't work for a while, and other times it self-assigns an IP address. (ARGH!) And then I have to try the hit-and-miss "solutions" that work sporadically at home, which work equally unreliably at school.
Can I make it STOP self-assigning an IP address when it thinks it can't get one from the network? Part of the problem seems to be that the AirPort does not to want to give up its IP address after it has self-assigned. Is there an equivalent to the DOS command ipconfig /release that I could type from a terminal window? (It has been a while since I used UNIX.)
There are many things I like about my new Mac (I was a UNIX user in grad school and then had to use a PC at work, so I am a newbie to Mac OS), but this problem is totally unacceptable for a computer that is supposed to be so much better than a Windows-based machine. At least in Windows I knew how to troubleshoot problems - here I am completely helpless! And I CANNOT believe Apple has not fixed this, because from what I can tell by looking on the web (when I can actually get a real IP address), people have had the problem for at least FOUR YEARS!!!!!!
Please help - I am desperate! Thank you in advance.

Have you tried making a New Location for each yet? The Automatic one get confused easily.
Some "nix" to try when it happens also...
sudo ipconfig set en1 BOOTP;sudo ipconfig set en1 DHCP
    sudo ifconfig en1 down;sudo ifconfig en1 up
Sometimes having an all OFF Location can help, thanks to Gnarlodious...

  • My MB won't let me connect the internet

The wireless is working my airport says it is and so does my pc. the macbook shows a connection. network Diagnostics says there a connection. BUT NO INTERNET. What can I do?

The only fix that works for me is to unplug and plug in the router.
It shouldn't be that way - but since I brought 2 macbooks into my home newtork, they drop connection very frequently.
The network ran flawlessly for a year and a half prior to the Macbook pruchases.
Applecare is useless on this issue and ignores the problem.

  • Self-assigned IP adress problem.  What if none of the fixes worked?

I just developed the "self-assigned Ip adress" at my college last night. I've been up all night on forums trying to solve the problem and tried about everything.
    I've:
Tried to Renew DHCP Lease. (does nothing)
Manually input ip address. (doesnt work because the college uses a dynamic ip instead of static)
Opened the firewall to allow all connections. (I think it already was open)
    Created a new location. (nothing)
Run diagnostics about 10 times. (prompts to reset router or modem, which I doubt is the problem since my roommate's laptop works fine)
    Created another ethernet connection. (nothing)
    Repaired the permissions. (nothing)
Can't think of what else I did, but I'm thinking it could be an issue with the 10.5.5 update, so if nothing else works, I am planning to use my OS disks to reinstall OS X (I think it was 10.5.3 when I bought it.)
If there is an easier way, please advise!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I too am having this problem. I just updated from 10.4 to leopard, and could not connect due to the self assigned IP. Found somewhere online on another computer that you can shut down, restart and hold down the shift key to boot up in safe mode. Then restart, and everything works, normal IP. I then did software update, to get the latest leopard updates, and had the same problem, used the same fix. I was coming on the forum to ask if anyone else had this problem and to see if there were any explanations. Hope this works for you. I will keep reading to see if anyone else has an explanation. I also noticed that Internet connect is no longer part of OSX. I travel a lot and that function has helped me connect in many places, so I hope it's exclusion won't mess me up.

  • I getting airport has a self-assigned ip address and may not be able to connect to the internet

I getting airport has a self-assigned ip address and may not be able to connect to the internet

I have got exactly the same message after we re-configured our router. I was connecting using my iMac wirelessly before hand, but now cannot. Our other PCs can connect wirelessly to the router so it's not the router. I have also tried the firewall solution but that doesn't work either.
I did call Apple Support who said that a full troubleshoot would cost £35 as my computer is older than 90 days (well yes it's been working fine that's why it's over 90 days old, it's only now that it isn't!). He said a trouble shoot didn't guarantee success so I declined his offer to charge me an extortionate amount of money for nothing! He did say that the router needs to be giving the Airport an IP address, but it isn't doing it now. His only suggestion was to turn off the router and turn it back on or power down the iMac. Neither of which help.
    Anyone else had any success?

  • Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the internet

Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the internet
The problem appears to have been a connection error as well as the system preferences which have reset with a 'valid' IP address after a system preferences 'reboot'.

Power off your internet router. Disconnect completely from its mains power by pulling the plug out of the mains socket. Disconnect all ethernet leads and cables to the router. Wait a minute or so and then reconnect all cables and turn on the power. See if your internet starts.

It depends on what iPhone you have.
If it's an iPhone 4S or earlier, click here.
If it's an iPhone 5, you need to buy a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, and that requires an Intel Mac with at least 1GB RAM.

  • My Firefox won't let me browse the Internet, even though I'm connected to the Internet.

Excuse me, but my Firefox 3.6 just randomly stopped working. It won't let me browse the Internet anymore-- the error message it always gives me is "Unable to connect", even though I'm fully connected to the Internet. Earlier I opened up Safari and Internet Explorer 9-- both, in which, let me browse the Internet, and I had a full connection. But, whenever I use Firefox now, it says "Unable to connect". And every time I type in a URL on it, Firefox gives me the ''SAME'' error message. I don't know what to do now. I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox and it does the same thing. So now I am stuck with using Safari, when I really wanna use my Firefox. Why is it doing this?

Make sure you are not set to Work Offline in File menu.
There is a possibility that your connection dropped even briefly, more so if using wireless. Make sure Firefox is not set to "[v] Work Offline" in File menu just above Exit.
By default, Firefox 3.5 and 3.6 will automatically use offline mode if there is no network connection. Under certain conditions, after the connection is reestablished it may remain in offline mode without the user's knowledge. Firefox 4 and newer prevents this behavior by default. To prevent this behavior in versions 3.5 and 3.6, add an entry to the '''about:config''' options, as follows.
    * Type '''about:config''' in Location (address) bar
    * Right-click on the about:config page to open the right-click context menu and use "New > Boolean" to create a new Boolean preference. Name: '''network.manage-offline-status'''. Value: '''false'''

Deauthorizing iTunes on a computer?  My laptop won't let me connect my iPhone because it says I'm authorized on too many computers, but when I try to de-authorize another computer I use it won't let me.  What's up?

What do you mean it won't let you?  What exactly does it say? (Sorry to sound so exasperated but this is like the 6th post in a row where people have made vague statements which do little to help us find solutions without a game of 20 questions.)  I'm going to guess and say you can only deauthorize a computer to which you have physical access or VPN login.  The alternative is to deauthorize all which you can only do once a year.

  • My brand new out the box airport extreme won't let anything connect to it.

My brand new out the box 5th gen (2013) airport extreme won't let anything connect to it. I've tried several setups from sratch by the book. multiple resets and restores still nothing. It just keeps telling mt that the password is in correct even though it is 100% right.
My curren set up is as follows. Phone Line -> ADSL2+ router -> Airport extreme. There is also an old airport express running of the router, this was done because the airport extremem was failing to work.
    Trying to connect:
    2x iPhone 4s
    2x macbook air
    2x Mac Pro.

You will want the Extreme to be in bridge mode if it is currently disabled. (see image below)
This will allow the ADSL2+ router to perform two important functions for your entire network: 1) Provide both the DHCP & NAT services, and 2) Provide PPPoE support to allow access to your ADSL ISPs network.
If the Extreme is left in its default state, a router, it will conflict with the first item and you will have want is known as a "double NAT" condition. Something you will want to avoid.
