What error screen are you getting, and how are you trying to download the update, within iTunes or via a browser ?
You should be able to download the latest version of iTunes on your computer within iTunes :
On a Mac in iTunes : iTunes > Check For Updates
On a PC : Help > Check For Updates
Or you can download the current version of iTunes from here : http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Have you tried downloading the update via a different browser ? -
I can't download the newest version of iTunes.
Running on Mac OS X 10.4 and can't download the most recent version of iTunes. Can't connect my iPhone to iTunes because it's not the newest version. I have no clue what to do!
You need to buy Mac OS X 10.5 if you have a G4 or G5 Mac, Mac OS X 10.6 if you have an Intel Mac, or a new Mac if you're using a G3.

Hi tKalra - I got the same error and finally managed to install itunes successfully. Below is what happened with me.
I have Windows7 64 bit. I downloaded itunes 10.6.3 for windows64bit and started the installation wizard by opening the downloaded file. At one stage I got the same error you have mentioned above. I started googling to find a solution and thats how I found your post. Anyway I went through lot of other posts that suggested lot of different things but I just wanted to try my own thing first.
So what I did is to go through with the wizard by clicking ok on the error. I then got an error about apple mobile device service not running. I ignored and went ahead with the installation. Installation finished but the itunes wont start giving the service not running error. I tried to manually start the service but it gave a privilege error.
I then went to control panel and uninstalled itunes, apple mobile device thing and bonjour..basically what ever was from apple. Then I also went to start -> run -> regedit and checked for any registry keys for apple under local user and local computer. Deleted if found. Restarted and then just right clicked on the itunes setup file that was downloaded and ran it as administrator. That did it for me. So I am guessing it was privilege thing but not sure. I bought my son a 1st generation Ipod touch off of Ebay. We set it back to factory settings and downloaded the newest version of itunes. Whenever he tries to download any apps it says "can not connect to itunes" I have checked the wifi connection and that is working (he can get on safari) and we have the newest version of windows. He was so excited to finally get his first Ipod and now cant do anything with it...please help

I just downloaded the newest version of Itunes, I deauthorized all of my computers and now can't find the menu to authorize. It refers to a store menu that doesn't exist on the new software. My account allowed me to deauthorize, but has no option to authorize. I am completely confused with the new software, I just want to download my music to my new computer.
With iTunes 11 on PCs the drop-down menus are hidden by default - control-B should get the menus to show

some folks have been having some success with pgfpdwife's technique in the following post:

note carefully that the technique involves a registry edit. be sure to make a backup of any keys you edit. if you're unfamiliar with your registry or registry editing, head to your XP help and support, do a search on registry, and read through the articles that come up.
