• How to repair a corrupt VHDX or extract data from it?

I have a virtualized Exchange 2013 server on Windows Server 2012 R2 with 2 virtual disks (C: OS drive and D: Exchange database and log files). After a power failure, the virtual server will not start because the second VHDX drive (the one with the databases
and log files) is corrupt and unreadable. If I remove the second VHDX, it will start successfully but the Exchange DB's are on the corrupt VHDX.
Nothing worked from other posts and some of the stuff will not work for the VHDX that people are posting for VHD's. I have tried mounting it on a host machine but it errors out saying it is corrupt and unreadable. I have tried to convert it to a VHD but
it does not work because it is corrupt and unreadable.
Anyone have any other ideas? I thought the whole idea of the VHDX was to prevent this from happening?!?

Hi Purvis13,
Please try to retore the VHD from a backup .
I'm afraid there is not yet a tool to repair the corrupted VHDX file at present .
(maybe some 3rd party software can do that)

• How I repaired a corrupted LR 2.4 catalog (MacOS)

Hi Everyone,
recently one of my catalogs got corrupted (the larger one, needless to say). I tried all the restoring procedures available but nothing worked. I could not simply go back to the latest backup since it did not hold all the changes I made to an assignment I was working on. So I figured out that I could try and repair it myself. And I did. Here's what I did. Please note that this information is provided AS IS with no warranty of any kind. The procedure below has been done on a MacOS and I do not know if it works the same in Windows. If you attempt this yourself, you take full responsability.
General knowledge of SQL and the workings of a DBMS are required.
LR catalog is a SQLite 3 DB. Therefore you can use SQLite 3 and SQL to work with it. Here are the steps that I followed:
1) Make a working copy of the corrupted catalog (here I named this TMPSRC.LRCAT). The procedure below is destructive and since there is no UNDO possible, I strongly suggest that you make copies of the DBs and move these to an empty working directory.
2) Launch SQLITE3 (in a Terminal window) and download the DB schema via the .schema command (save it in a TXT file for reference, you'll need this badly)
3) Make a working copy of the latest backp catalog as the basis for all the modifications (here I named this TMPDST.LRCAT)
4) The logic is to use the backup catalog and copy in it all the information of the corrupted catalog eliminating those elements that are actually corrupted.
5) In SQLITE3 attach the two DBs with this command:
attach "./tmpsrc.lrcat" as src;
attach "./tmpdst.lrcat" as dst;
6) Now, following the DB schema (previously saved) issue for each TABLE in the schema an analyze command on the SRC DB, like this:
analyze src.Adobe_libraryImageDevelopHistoryStep;
7) Sooner or later you'll find the culprit corrupted table (TABLE)
8) To find the record which is beginning of the corruption isue this command:
select id_local from src.TABLE;
9) To show the last record, pick up the last number (RECNUM) displayed and issue this command:
select * from src.TABLE where id_local = RECNUM;
10) You should get an error message; if so, repeat the procedure by selecting the previous record number until you find a one that does not give errors. This RECNUM will be WRECNUM.
11) Now look in to the DST DB and check how many records are missing from that vary same table:
select id_local from dst.TABLE;
12) The logic now is to copy from the SRC all the records in TABLE up to the RECNUM that works (WRECNUM) into DST. In this process we'll overwrite the TABLE in DST.
delete from dst.TABLE;
insert into dst.TABLE select * from src.TABLE where id_local <= WRECNUM;     reindex dst.TABLE;
13) The tricky part is that with a high probability the corrupted table is linked with some others that need to be updated by the same process as well. Therefore you need to go through the DB schema again and check each and every table both in DST and SRC to have the id_local aligned. If not, you shoud repeat the procedure above even if the table itself is not corrupted.
The whole process took me about 3 hours on a 300MB catalog.

• How to repair a corrupt Time Machine Backup

I have been Googling & searching also here in the support community about how delicate Time Machine is. I think I've broken so many Time Machine "don'ts" that I NOW know what I did and where I need to do things differently. Moving forward.
I have a Time Machine backup on an external HD. I have also recently re-installed Mountain Lion and now need to restore my files from Time Machine.
This is where the problem starts. Time Machine won't restore, and when I (yes, I NOW know it's a no-no, please hold your foul comments) go into the Backups.backupdb folder manually, all the folders are now shortcuts, and they lead no where.
I have tried to no avail:
To repair permissions with Disk Utility
To repair the drive with DiskWarrior
Does anyone have any (constructive) suggestions? This backup contains the usual personal documents & photos that we can all agree are most important, but also I have stuff pertaining to legal matters that I can not lose under any circumstances. Having invested $99.95 on DiskWarrior just really burns me up at this point because that was the recommended fix for this problem.
Any advice or assistance I can get from anyone would be deeply appreciated!

When I go into the "star wars" Time Machine screen, all the backups are blank & black. My Backups.backupdb folder has gone from 483Gig, to 4.72TB on a 2TB drive. When I use the finder to manually look in the Backups.backupdb folder, all the folders inside are alias' and when I double-click them, they say that the alias is broken, do I want to delete it or fix it.
I know that all the Backups.backupdb is just a database that links to the files stored on the hard drive, and I need a utility that will repair the links to each file. If no one has something that does this, perhaps this is a great opportunity for someone to create such a utility.
I'm going to try using Data Rescue to just restore the drive completely and pick through it manually.

Hi,
I have a tablesopace with 3 datafiles, out of which one datafile has corrupted block. But no objects or data is affected as the corrupted block os in free space. This was shown in the alert logs.

================================================================
The corruption is being reported in a free space block of the ORDER_DATA_01.DBF.
I’ve checked all the tables (and indexes) in this tablespace and none report corruption.
=====================================================Is there any action I need to take to remove corruption at this point?It is not affected any operation on the database yet.
What is the best way to do get rid of the corrupt block, without dropping and rebuillding the full tablespace(which is around 6 GB -total of 3 datafiles)
Thanks a lot

Can RMAN recover the datablock from this cold backup(which is a week old, the data file was not corrupted then) ?Please note that to do the recovery, you would need the backup and the archivelog files since the backup. Think about what you are asking to do. Its a single block whose recovery you are asking from a week old backup which obviously would be on an much older SCN compared to the rest of the database. How would you make that block consistent with the rest of the datafile. If you don't have archivelog in that db whose block is corrupted, you may forget that block and any data that it might ever had. Also, please read the documentation about the block recovery which explains the requirements very clearly,
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/backup.112/e10642/rcmblock.htm#BRADV89784
From the above link, 1st point,
The target database must run in ARCHIVELOG mode and be open or mounted with a current control file.HTH

• How to repair a corrupt LR catalog?

While I was importing photos from an SD card using a Promaster card reader using an iMac OSX computer, I suddenly got the spinning beach ball. After several minutes, I realized that the computer and LR program were completely frozen, and the only alternative was to turn the computer off. After I turned the computer back on, I ultimately got the message, "the LR catalog is corrupt and cannot be used or backed up until is is repaired. The box had 'repair operation' so I clicked on it and ultimately got the flat message , "The LR 2 Catalog' is corrupt and cannot be repaired at this time." I'm completely at a loss as to what to do at this point and would appreciate any advise.

Just remember to copy the backup somewhere else before you open it, so its not a backup anymore - otherwise you could end up trying to backup your backup into your backup and end up with a bigger mess than you had to begin with...

• How to repair a corrupted word 2013 document?

Yesterday I was working on a very important Microsoft Word (2013) document, when it suddenly crashed. Upon trying to reopen the file Word said: “The
file is corrupted and cannot be opened”. I have tried all of the other methods of restoring it, such as opening it in a different program, or opening it and choosing "open and repair" in MS Word.

When a Word document file is corrupted, then you can try several methods to recover it:
1. First of all, you can try the recovery function integrated with Microsoft Word, as follows:
1) On the File menu, click Open.
2) In the Look in list, click the drive, folder, or Internet location that contains the file that you want to open.
3) In the folder list, locate and open the folder that contains the file.
4) Select the file that you want to recover.
5) Click the arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open and Repair.
You may find more information about this at:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word-help/recover-the-text-from-a-damaged-document-HP005189610.aspx (for Word 2003)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893672/en-us (for Word 2007/2010/2013)
2. Second, since Word 2003, it provides a "Document Recovery" or "AutoRecover" mechanism so that when Word is shutdown abnormally, the Word file being edited will be recovered when Word is launched next time, which makes the file recovery possible.
See below:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316951/

for more detailed information.
3. If 1 and 2 does not work, then you may try third-party tools such as DataNumen Word Repair at
http://www.datanumen.com/word-repair/
It provides a free demo version so that you can try to see if the data you want can be recovered or not.
Good luck!

• Anyone know how to repair a corrupted .DMG file? I recovered the file using Disk Drill. There are actually 4-6 files I have encrypted into a DMG - now they are back on my desktop (deleted them months ago) and the size is correct (between 500-900 MB each)

I deleted several .mov files a while back that were encrypted into a .dmg file. Using Disk Drill, I was able to recover 5 of these files, roughly 500-900 MB each and successfully moved them to my desktop. When I try to open the .dmg file, the dreaded error message "no mountable file systems" shows up. I have tried various fixes based on searches and none have worked. Are these files just corrupted and unreadable, or is there a way to fix?

Thanks for the obvious question. I mean it. The very same thought came to me this morning and, sure enough, I had booted into another drive--my old one that, of course, had the old desktop, etc.
It didn't dawn on me that this was the case since I hadn't set it as a boot drive but I guess in the course of all the restarts I did, it got switched.
I'm back to normal again.

Hi there !
I am having problems with a couple of PDF-files which got damaged due to a hard drive break down / file recovery action.
Neither can i open them ("...not supported") nor have several attempts in repairing them (by using Pdf-repair software) been successful.
Interesting point about it is, that in terms of file characteristics everything seems to be OK (file size, file type etc. are recognized by the computer).
Does anyone have an idea what could be done to get my PDF's back to a readable status ?
Thanks     timrelo

I have important MS Excel file data and unfortunately got corrupt due to virus attacks, so my crucial Excel sheet got lost, how to repair corrupt MS Excel 2003 (XLS) File? If have any solution please assist me.

A corrupt excel spreadsheet can be repaired by using Open and Repair technique. It is a built-in repair function that opens a corrupt excel file forcefully.
*Open MS Excel > press Ctrl+O > locate corrupt excel spreadsheet and select it.
*Click on the arrow shown beside Open button > select Open and Repair.
It will take just a few seconds to be completed and selected file will be opened, if possible.
Or if this doesn't work, one may take help of a third-party Excel Recovery software. I would recommend
Excel Repair Kit software to recover data from corrupt excel spreadsheet. The software is available with free demo version. To read more about this software and to download its free demo version, visit: http://www.excel.repair/

• How to repair Open Directory Master after Changing Hostname

Summary:
How to repair Open Directory after Changing your Server's Hostname (see separate post)
Problem:
I had to change our server's hostname from a private hostname (server.name.private) to a public hostname (name.dyndns.org).
Procedure:
1. Precautions:
Since I was anticipating major dramas I tested the change of hostname on a clone ( I used Super Duper, and I very strongly advise everybody to heed this warning because a change of hostname will corrupt your server services, in particular Open Directory)
Second, I exported the network users from Server Admin and copied the archive to the Drop Folder of the server's local account (because the network accounts will be unavailable after demoting the OD Master.)
2. Change hostname and demote OD Master
a) I re-booted the server from the clone
b) I changed the hostname in Server App and I noticed that the Open Directory Password and the Kerberos database were still stuck with the old hostname.
c) I then demoted to a standalone directory (Server Admin) and I tried to promote the server to an OD Master using the Server App (Manage Network Accounts). Server App always returned an error saying I should check my network settings.
3. List of 'fixes'
I tried the following fixes to no avail (which does not mean that you can skip them)
a) I checked the DNS entries, forward and reverse were working fine (sudo checkip -changehostname)
b) Checked with Lookup in Network Utility, all was fine
c) I deleted all system certificates (Keychain) which showed the name of the previous hostname
( N.B. you need not delete email certificate and private/public keys)
d) I tried to assign a new static IP in Networking Preferences (had no visible result)
e) I re-booted from the working drive and I re-paired permissions on the clone; I ran disk repairs.
Despite all this I could not re-create an OD Master.
I then looked for this dubious folder /var/root/Library/Application Support/Certificate Authority.
I could not find this folder when using the Finder's Go To Folder, nor did "Easy Find" see this folder.
I was about to give up when I read the posts on this page and I entered the Terminal commands
sudo rm -R /var/root/Library/Application\ Support/Certificate\ Authority/
I had not much hope when I set about to re-create the OD Master from the Server App.
But lo and behold !!! I did not trust my eyes when Server App claimed that the OD Master had been successfully created. And indeed, Server admin showed a running OD Master, LDAP, Kerberos and Password Server all running again !
Final touch: re-import the user accounts.
Epilogue:
I woud not have been able to fix this issue had not so many others shared their experience and the working solution.
(Refer : https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3219325?start=0&tstart=0 )
Thank you all !
Let's hope that Apple will fix this annoying issue in the next server update.
