TS1367 My computer starts up but displays a dark screen

MY computer turns on and you can hear it load up but only displays a black screen.

Hi Josi86,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I know that it is both frustrating and concerning when your computer does not start up as you would expect. In this situation I would recommend working through the troubleshooting steps and information located in the attached article.
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck
Have a great day,

  • Computer starts up, but displays no pictures.

    Hello,
I am in a pickle and in desperate need of help! I have a hp a6763w desktop that I had purchased from a friend. When he first got it, it was doing the same problem it is doing now. When starting the desktop the screen stays blank and does not display anything. He read online somewhere about replacing the power cable? I was just curious if anybody had any thoughts or answers to this because I desperatly need my computer. Also I replaced the video card in with a top dog one and took it out and tried just using the kn board vga and still nothing! Please Help! Thanks

    Hi,
Return it to your friend and get money back. Problem solved.
    Regards.

    Hi sergio.cajiao,
Here are some troubleshooting ideas for video playback issues:

If that does not resolve the issue, you may want to report it to iTunes by following this article:

  • Hello all.   Hope someone can help me. I recently downloaded some  updates for my imac.  Since doing this the computer starts up but I get no logon box.  The home screen opens but I can't open any programs or files. I've tried rebooting, no joy. Help!!

Hello all..   I hope someone here can help.  I recently downloaded some updates to my imac.  Since then the computer starts but I get the home screen opening without the logon box.    I can't open any programs or files and if I click on the Safari tab it disappears from the dock.  I've tried rebooting with no joy.
I contacted technical help at Apple and was told to hold down the ctrl and alt keys with two other keys, I think the S or P keys when powering up. This worked
and the computer seemed fine but now the problem has reappeared.  Is there a way to removed downloaded updates from the computer or revert it to an earlier state?   Sorry for the long question. Hopefully one of you clever people can help.   Simon

Hay thank you for your time . I do that every time I know I am online. It says that I am up to date . I have found that I have 10.4.11 version, and that my boot version is 10.6.2, and that my kernel version is 8.11.1.
I have a hard drive icon on my desktop that says 10.6.2....
I use to have iphoto, it doesnt open anymore, it says there is 1.2gigs on that disk. There are many things on here that are the same way. Where do I start?
It's always good to go with one thing at a time and stay focused on that. Let's start with the OS you're running. Click on the Apple menu > About This Mac. What does it say under Mac OS X version ?

  • Computer starts up but HD and Menu bar are not visible?

Recently my Powerbook G4 began to act strangely and either freeze or slow way down for the first time in its four years of use. I have a new IMac to replace it. Here is my current problem:
I'm trying to copy over some files via Firewire. I start my powerbook in target mode. Its icon appears on my new imac and I start to copy over. Midway through copying, I dragged an open window to a different place on the screen of my new computer, and the copy stalled/froze. I couldn't drag the target HD icon to the trash to shut down my powerbook properly, so I held down its power key and it turned off.
Now, when I try to restart the powerbook in target mode, its icon wont appear on my new computer's desktop, though the 'I'm in target mode' screen saver bounces around on my powerbook.
When I try to boot up my Powerbook to shut it down properly on its own, it starts up, but the stuff I have stored on my desktop, including the HD icon, don't appear. Neither does the menu bar, so I can't shut it down that way. The dock appears, as does the photo that I use for my desktop image. I can click on dock applications, and they do the bouncy thing, but they don't open.
Any ideas? Thanks very much to anyone who can help!

And how did Single User Mode work out?
If you can't start it up in SUM or from an installer disc, put it in FW Target Disk mode again and see whether Disk Utility on the host Mac can see it to make repairs. DU may be able to see the drive even if it doesn't appear on the desktop of the host machine.
My guess is that by disconnecting it improperly in FWTDM (not that you had much choice under the circumstances), you well and truly hosed the hard drive.

  • My MacBook Pro won't start - it just displays a grey screen with flashing icon of a folder with a question mark in the middle. Help.

It started while I was using Adobe InDesign, and that program froze, then crashed. When I tried to reopen the program, the error message I received was simply "Error: 16".
I tried to take a screen shot of the error message for reference, and it gave me a message saying I couldn't because I didn't have access to the files where it would normally store the shot.
Attached to my computer at the time was my Seagate Free Agent Go-Flex for Mac backup drive.
So, I closed any open applications, and restarted my computer. But it wouldn't restart. It only displays a grey screen with a flashing icon in the middle of a folder with a question mark on it.
I have no idea what happened - I wasn't using the machine any differently than usual, and it only had a few basic applicaitons open in addition to InDesign (like Preview, Text Edit, Microsoft Word, iCal).
I have MacKeeper on my MacBook, and I keep it clean.
Does anyone out there know what this flashing icon indicates, and if there is anything I can try on my own to fix it?
    Thanks.

Seems a uninstall and reinstall of CS is in order.

May or may not be a contributing factor,  may have kicked in at a wrong time or running root code.
So, I closed any open applications, and restarted my computer. But it wouldn't restart. It only displays a grey screen with a flashing icon in the middle of a folder with a question mark on it.

I have MacKeeper on my MacBook, and I keep it clean.
Well that explains it, MacKeeper is almost malware.
    http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/
Search the forums here for "MacKeeper" they will tell the whole story, crapware.
Disconnect all drives, follow the "Grey Screen" instructions and hold Shift key down while booting, if you get into OS X , immediatly backup your files to another drive and disconnect.
In my opinion you should first check to make sure you have a backup of your data, then just erase the entire internal drive (hold c boot off the 10.6 disk, use Disk Utility), reinstall OS X, same user name, update to 10.6.8, c boot off the 10.6 and Repair Disk (to fix a update error) install your programs and finally return files from backup into the same main user folders like before (Music, Docs, Pictures etc.)
A pain it is, but you've hosed your system and in the process you might as well rebuild everything and have a fast machine again. So happens to clear MacKrapper, uninstall CS5 and any other junk in your system at the same time. Fresh, clean, lean and mean.
Learn to Carbon Copy Cloner to a external drive that new pristine boot drive, you can hold the option key and boot from it (even update it), which is a real bacon saver when something like this happens.  Also it's free to use, donations accepted.

Note: if anything above I've mentioned is too complicated or your not sure, seek the services of a local computer specialist.

  • Firefox starts up and shows up in the task manager, but displays only off screen. How can I make it display elsewhere? I have restarted and reinstalled to no avail.

    Nothing to add here.

This page will position the Firefox window at the upper left of your display (assuming you haven't disabled JavaScript):
    http://dev.jeffersonscher.com/jstest.html
If Firefox is your default browser, you can load that page by clicking the Windows "orb" on the task bar and pasting it into the "Search programs and files box", then press Enter or click the result with the Firefox icon next to it.
I don't have a dual monitor setup, so I don't know whether it works in that case.

  • Macbook start-up but stays on white screen and then clicking noice

I was working on my macbook and suddenly it just became incredibly slow and then it was non-responsive. So I shut it off, and when I turned it back on, it was just a white screen, with the clicking noice in the bottom right corner and then a question mark symbol came up in the middle of the screen and now I can't access any of my important files that I need, Someone help please!!

If you have another computer and a FireWire cable you can try booting this computer into Target Disk Mode by holding the T key at bootup, and then attach the computer to another one via the FireWire cable. This should allow the second computer to see your computer's drive as an external disk.
Alternatively you can try booting up off the Leopard DVD and see if you can access the drive from the Disk Utility software on the DVD. This will be available in the "Utilities" menu after you select your language. From here you can try running a drive repair and hope you can at least get it to be readable.
Unfortunately beyond this, and without any other drive utility software, there's not much you can do without taking it to a technician who can hopefully remove the drive and read data off of it with special hardware. When drives go bad they tend to just stop working altogether.

  • G5 boots but displays nothing on screen and sometimes white screens and boots from CD. Help?

    I have a G5 (1.8 Ghz/DP/8GB RAM) and it has a problem.
When it does show something on screen it shows a white screen and will boot from a CD (OS X or Linux) but when it doesn't it show anything on screen and the fans rev up (This happens whether is shows nothing or white screens) Does anyone know how to fix this?
PS: When it boots from the CD everything works fine.

Backup your data if you have a successful boot.   You have no idea what may be damaged or not.
See this data recovery routine if needed:

  • My Macbook starts up but with a black screen until I shift key and reboot it a few times

    Hi
I am not very technically at all, I am posting this because I haven't been able to get an appointment with apple for weeks.
I mac book is around 3/4  years old, hardly used, its 17inch and all the software is up to date.
in the last week every time i turn on my laptop the screen goes to black and I have to hit shift and the power button a few times before it works. Once it is on it works perfect. i have never dropped the laptop.
What is wrong and how do i stop this?
thank you for your help and time.
    Janette x

    You are welcome!
Sometimes resetting the SMC "fixes" odd problems. Glad I could help.

  • Macbook 5,1: everything works, but in a dark screen.

My Macbook 5,1 screen is almost completely dark. If I point a flashlight at the screen I can see everything is working fine: It boots, I can open apps, etc. It's just too dark. Someone told me I need to replace the logic board, and that's $1,100 at the Apple Retailer in my city.
I've read some articles saying it`s the backlight or the converter cable... How do I know if I actually have to change the logic board or just fix the display cables? I really don't trust that Apple retailer, because of previous experiences... but they're the only authorized ones around here.
    Any help appreciated.

Hi Leo i have the same problem...and nobody has replied to my post either!
I actually took my macbook to an authorized apple store and they did replace my display cables...however the screen remained dark. So they took a look at the logic board and evidently when the display cables crapped out they created a spark which put a teeny tiny burn on my logic board that somehow prevents the screen from lighting up properly.
Like your Apple Store, they told me i have to replace my logic board...but that if i didnt want to pay the $1000 i might be able to find a smaller unauthorized store who is willing to do component repair (fix the little burn on my existing logic board for much less $.)
Anyway im just interested to hear what you decided to do? Im totally stumped and and any advice/feedback would be helpful!
    Thank you!
    Tracy

  • My iPod Touch, gen 4, CAMERA just stopped working.  All it does is display a dark screen.

That's it.  It stopped working with no apparent cause.  No sync, no connection with myPC.
I tried to force it to fix itself by connecting to the PC and syncing, no good.

    Hi Ingo2711,
Thanks for the suggestion.  But I don't understand it as your words seem to conflict with the words at the link.
Not to mention, it feels like a start over and that scares ,me more than it is worth.
No other way to get back my camera and my photos?
WHOOOOOPSSS!!!!  I just attached my iTiuch to my PC setting off an ajutomatic SYNC and that jarred it back to working again.
