I need to sync to itunes to seach for updates for my iphone 4. I have had a new SIM card and the phone does not recognise it (yes it is on the same network). In settings there does not appear to be a 'carrier' option. Apparently thi is quite common and all I need to do is update through itunes.
Itunes or my computer is not recognising my phone at all. What do I need to do? I have not sunced with this computer before either

Backing up your phone isn't really relevant. You can download items you've already purchased (from the iTunes Store on your Mac) to your phone. If you have items you didn't purchase, e.g. ripped CDs, you would have to subscribe to 'iTunes Match' ($24.99 p.a.) to be able to do the same thing with them.

After a visit to the apple store, they were able to get through my pass code but unfortunately I found out that is was a problem with the logic board. Since Apple only wants to sell and not fix, I was able to locate an iphone repair near me that deals with logic boards and they are currently working on it right now. i should be getting it back soon. Im not sure if the problem you are experiencing is the same as i went through but it does sound like it may be also a hardware issue and would suggest searching online for an iphone repair place that can diagnose what exactly is wrong. Unless you're trying to tether your phone to your computer or create a personal hotspot, it won't pair with your computer by bluetooth. File transfer by bluetooth is not supported. So, you can quit trying unless you're trying to tether.

Are you concerned about photos that you have taken with the iPhone in the Camera Roll, or photos you have synced to the iPhone from your computer?
Contacts should be configured to sync with an app on your computer. You set this up in iTunes on the Info tab with the iPhone connected. You will not lose any contacts if the app on your computer has at least one contact.

Is it disabled due to too many incorrect passcode attempts ? If it is then you may need to put the iPad into recovery mode : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808 - you should then be able to reset the iPad and restore/resync your content to it.

Assuming you are in a region where you are allowed to redownload your past music purchases, delete the corrupt tracks from the music section of your iTunes library, close & then reopen iTunes, go to the iTunes Store home page, click the Purchased link from the Quick Links section in the right-hand column, then select Music and Not on this computer. You should find download links for your tracks there.
While downloading select Downloads in the left-hand column and make sure Allow Simultaneous Downloads is unchecked. This seems to help with partial downloads...
If the problem persists, or that facility is not yet available in your region, contact the iTunes Store support staff through the "Report a problem" links in your account history, or via Contact Support.

With AT&T it's ridiculously easy.
Create backups for each device
Log out of iCloud Apple ID
Erase all content and settings
Power off the devices
Change the SIM
Power on the device
Configure with the appropriate Apple ID
Finally, dial 611 to let AT&T know what iPhone should answer to what number.
