TS1381 Apple keyboard weirdness...no capital 'E' via left Shift key...?

Suddenly, today, I cannot type a capital 'e' using the left SHIFT key. Using the left SHIFT key can create capitals of all other letters... and the right SHIFT key and CAPS LOCK keys can product capital 'e's with no problem... but the combination of the left SHIFT key and the 'e' does nothing... no lower case 'e'... nothing. Restart did nada. I'm running a USB Apple ketboard with number pad and OSX 10.7.5.
Any ideas?

Sadly this happens to me with the same key and like you the situation can be mitigated with the use of the caps lock too.

My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).
The left shift key behaves the same on the laptop keyboard and on an external Apple keyboard.
This just started in last week after 6 months of use.  The right shift key and other keys on the keyboard all appear to work correctly.
    Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support.  Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences.  Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key).  I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility.  The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future.

i cannot type a capital i using the left shift key. also keyboard now putting the cursor in a different place than where i type while i am typing. Checked speech keys, all fine. Batteries fine. Also used the keyboard check program on the imac, shows key ok.
wireless mouse will suddenly scroll down horizontally and won't stop. when i am on a webpage it will bounce back to the previous page without my doing so. i have tried adjusting the mouse several times, turning it on and off, and now am using my wacom mouse which also seems to have issues with this computer.  i have only had this a few months and getting very frustrated.

Can you try a different keyboard to see if the problem persists? Also, you have 90 days of phone support when you buy a mew mac.

I have two last things to try. The first is a hard reset. The instructions for that are here:  Performing a Hard Reset or Forced Reset
If that doesn't help, the last option is to try to restore your BIOS. The instructions are here: Restoring the BIOS
If that fails, it will most likely be a hardware issue. I am not certain of your warranty coverage, you can find that information from support, as well as your repair options.
Alternatively, you might be able to look your warranty status up here: Check your product warranty

  • Wireless Keyboard backspace working in the opposite direction. Left Shift key won't work on T or I

    Hi Everyone,
I have scanned the boards for hours and have found that there are several keyboard issues, but they all seem to be unique.
    So this is my issue:
My keyboard which came with my iMac (late 2009) has decided that it has a mind of its own.
The left hand shift key will not work for T or I and the backspace button will not work in correct direction.
I have tried my keyboard on my iMac and my Macbook Pro with no success.
So if anyone has any suggestion it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

Is it possible that you have inadvertently switched to a different keyboard layout? Open System Preferences, then click on the Language & Text preferences. Within the Language & Text preferences click on the 'Input Sources'. You should see a long list of languages representing the various keyboard layouts that are available. Make sure that only the keyboard language you use is selected. If there are multiple languages selected then de-select the extras.
If you continue to have problems then check the 'Show input menu in menu bar' checkbox in the lower section of the preference pane. This will place an icon in the upper right menu bar (it looks like a flag representing the language you have chosen for your input device) that provides additional options. I suggest selecing the 'Show Keyboard Viewer' option and then try pressing the keys that you are having problems with to see how they show up on the keyboard viewer graphic. If you've set the correct language for your keyboard and the key sequences still don't match, then you may need to take your keyboard in for service. Better yet, borrow another keyboard to confirm that the keyboard is the issue.

  • Flex 2-14 keyboard flexing in the center and left. Keys not registering.

    Hello Lenovo Community,
I recieved my Flex 2-14 about 2 weeks ago. Right after I took it out and began using it I noticed the keyboard was really "flexing" when typing, especially in the middle and left side.
Also, when typing, sometimes the keys won't register which causes letters to be missing in words. In almost every sentence I type there are letters always missing. I noticed that I have to press in the exact center of keys or else they will not register. Even if I press a key all the way down on the sides, nothing happens. This is a really disappointing keyboard from Lenovo, definitely the worst I've used.
Is anyone else experiencing either of these issues? What can I do to get this fixed?
    Thank you.

Hi, yes having exactly the same issue syptoms as you hve described. Took it back to PC World - advised that was the design!

  • Apple Keyboard - keypad functionality?

I do a lot of architectural work in AutoCAD via VirtualPC running windows 2000. One of my main reasons for getting an external keyboard was to have the keypad to do numeric entries, a habit learned at PC workstations previously. My problem is that I don't seem to be able to get VirtualPC to recognize that the number lock is on. As most of us know, Apple doesn't bother with adding the directional arrow functionality to the keypad, so there's no numberlock key to counter it.
However, windows assumes that the numberlock is off and I can't seem to use the keypad as the numberpad is was meant for. I don't see anything in SystemPreferences that would help. Under VPC preferences, I have the option to assign the keyboard different windows functionalities li ke, left windows key, right windows key, application key, forward delte key, end key print screen. scroll lock, and pause. Sadly, number lock doesn't make this list.
If there is anyone with a solution or suggestion, please send a line! This is about as bad as not having windows 2000 recognize the 3rd mouse button which controls panning in AutoCAD. I've been told to download this or that driver so that it would recognize the third button, but those haven't worked in the past, and I doubt this can be solved on the windows end in terms of drivers. So please, send aid!

Little help was to be had here. However, I figured this out recently by accident. The tick is to hit the "clear" key by the keypad. This corresponds to the numberlock key on other windows manufacturer keyboards and is interpreted as such by the OS. Hopefully this will be of some help to someone else.

  • MacBook stuck with shift key enabled and numbers not working - even the keyboard app in languages wont type lowercase nor numbers?!  Anyone know whats up?  no spillage...cant understand why the keyboard app wont do anything.

Anyone have a clue?  I can understand the keyboard being broke / shift key being stuck but why in the world would I not be able to type the numbers on the language keyboard app on the operating system?  Numbers show up on the app but when I press them I still get the special characters like #^&#* and it wont type lower case. Nothing has ever been spilt, just stopped working one day.  Rebooted from Time Capsule restore dated a month ago and its still doing it. (problem started two weeks ago).  Only way to get lower case or numbers to actually show up is the copy and paste.
    Any help would be amazing!

If you can afford it, I would recommend replacing the topcase and keyboard as Apple suggests. If like me, you can't afford it or are open to a hack fix, then read on.
    The problem
Yesterday, a little water spilt on my 13" MBP keyboard. I turned it around immediately, drained out the water and used tissue to suck it all up but the keyboard was still acting funny. I turned it off and left it out in the sun for a couple of hours and turned it on again but problems remained. Like Rickdubya, my warranty had run out just a month ago and I knew Apple would not cover this under warranty. I tried to clean the shift keys and left it overnight with some rice on them with hopes that the moisture might get sucked out. Nothing worked. (The rice bit is an urban legend that seems to work with some electronics). Went to the Apple Store this morning and was told that they wouldn't even take out the key and clean it, and that the entire top case would have to be replaced. A total bill of 156 Euros which I cannot afford. I had a USB keyboard that would let me use the Mac for the moment so I decided to try to work out a fix.
    Symptoms
    - Boots in safe mode everytime (which I later found out was because the shift key is pressed)
    - Cannot login because password is in lower case or has numbers
    - Cannot boot in super user mode and try to disable keys or override password as some commands won't work in uppercase (I wouldn't recommend this anyway because its super user mode)
    - All text is in caps and numbers are symbols as though shift key is always pressed
    - Audio doesn't work
    - Keyboard viewer would not always show the shift key pressed. The key seemed to get pressed at random
    Fix
    1. Hold the Option button down on boot to bypass the Safe Mode ensure a normal boot
    2. At the login screen, plug in a USB keyboard and enter your password to login
    3. Change your password to one that uses all caps and no numbers
    4. Download and install KeyRemap4MacBook .
    5. Use a combination of the functionalities of the Keyboard Viewer and KeyRemap4MacBook to figure out which shift key is the problem. In my case, I found out that it was only my left shift key.
    6. Disable the left/right shift key on KeyRemap4MacBook and click on the 'Reload XML' button to make that take effect.
If only one shift key was the problem, then you are done. If both shift keys were shorted, then its likely other keys are too. In which case you should probably just replace the entire thing. If you think other keys are not affected, then you can use KeyRemap4MacBook itself to remap the shift functionality to a lesser used key like the Left Option key.
    7. Under System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items , add KeyRemap4MacBook as an application that should start on login. This will ensure that your disable/remap of the shift key is active everytime you login.
    Usage change/Things to remember
    1. Remember to hold down the Option key everytime the computer boots or reboots to bypass safe mode. The fix above is at the software level. The key is physically still shorted at the hardware level and will affect boot.
    2. Remember that at the login screen, the disable/remap is not active. So your password now has to be all caps and only letters.
As soon as I can save some money, I will get my topcase and keyboard replaced but until then this solution works great with minimal change. Hope this helps!

  • Wireless Keyboard's left and right shift keys don't like some keys...

    Hello everyone!
I recently bought a second hand 2009 Apple Wireless Keyboard to use with my iPad 32GB Wi-Fi.
When pressed by themselves, the keys all individually work - I've tested them all using my MacBook's Keyboard and Character Viewer. The problem is when I use either shift keys with the following keys:
    123456789
    qwertyuio
Now, the odd thing is, the left shift key won't wok with either of those lines but the right shift key will work with the letters but not the numbers.
Using sticky keys on my MacBook, I can get every single one of the numbers to give out their character (!@£ etc.) with the left and right shift keys. I've not got Mouse Keys turned on either (and I don't think there's an option to enable it on the iPad)
Also, the Shift keys work perfectly fine with all of the other keys on the keyboard so they aren't worn out.
Any ideas what could be making my keyboard this way..? Or should I send it back (if I can...)?
    Thank you for your time!

ok so i've made a bit of progress on my own...
i've found the on-screen keyboard viewer (silly me, i was looking under "keyboard" in system preferences...) and this flashes with each key i press except the problematic left and right cursor keys.
moreover, if i click the left and right cursor keys on the on-screen keyboard, they behave as they should, moving my cursor left and right.
this is starting to look like a hardware fault but i'd love to be able to test outside of the OSX GUI to be really sure. is there any way i can do that. not sure i want to get the screwdriver out just yet...

  • Right shift and c not working, Left shift and c works fine for a capital c

I have a Lenovo G560 laptop. Had this problem once before and computer tech fixed problem, but moved cities. Worked fine but recently had a windows update. Now when I press the right shift key and c nothing happens. Left shift and c displays a capital c. How do I restore the right shift c ?

    hi richiestac,
You can try to remap the Right Shift Key so that it will function as Left Shift using Sharpkeys.
    To do this:
    1. Download and install Sharpkeys
    2. Open Sharpkeys, click on Add and on the Map this key (From Key) , select the Right Shift key, then on the To this key (To key), select the Left Shift key.
      - Link to picture
    3. When finished, click Write to Registry and reboot.
As for the display driver installation, you need to uninstall first any signs of Intel HD Graphics from the Control Panel (Icon View) > Programs and Features. After that, open Device Manager > Display Adapters and uninstall the Intel Graphics (ensure you put a check on Delete the driver software for this device and try to re-install the Intel Onboard Graphics Driver.
Alternatively, you can skip all the procedures above and just press the OneKey Recovery button to restore the system to factory settings (note that all data will be wiped on the OS partition).

  • Keyboard left shift and uppercase y (see, there it didn't work)

I am unable to get an uppercase Y using the normal combination of that letter and the left shift key. To get it in the previous sentence I used the right shift key. The caps lock key and the right shift key seem to work normally. The left shift key produces all of the appropriate characters except the upper case of Y.
Is this a hardware or software problem?
Can someone suggest how I might troubleshoot this?
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Open the Speech pane of System Preferences and look at the settings for the listening key and the speech key; if either of these has become set to that keyboard combination, change the setting.

  • Power-on, via USB Apple Keyboard?

Is there a way to power up the MacBook from the USB Apple Keyboard when the lid is closed (with an external monitor attached)?

Interesting docks. The very first G3 iMacs and the Blue and White G3 towers had USB keyboards with power buttons. But, around 2000, when the black Apple "Pro" keyboard and mouse appeared, not only did the power button disappear from the keyboard but so did the ability to startup the Mac from USB. Whether you have a MacBook or a MacBook Pro, you'll need to open it to start it up. But, with that said, is there a reason to shut down your MacBook at all? I'm not sure I've ever shut down my MacBook on purpose. It restarts every few weeks for software updates, but I never just "shut down". The Unix underpinnings of Mac OS X are very happy running 24/7 and sleeping when the Mac isn't being used.
