TS1388 Upgrade macbook air late 2008 to mavericks not working

I have a late 2008 macbook air and im trying to install mavericks, when i press download and install on app store it says it cannot be installed on that macbook air. but according to the specs on the apple webpage its compatible with mavericks. im currently running snow leopard. I tried to make a bootable disk using disc utilities, everything is done correctly and i start up my macbook air holding option key and choose my bootable USB as startup disc, but i just get a circle with a line through almost like a prohibited sign. What must i do?

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) model number 2,1 or higher

  • Macbook pro late 2008 (unibody) backlight not working, trackpad issue

    Hi,
My wife is running 10.7.4 (Lion) on a MacBook Pro late 2008, first gen unibody. There is two issue with her computer.
The first issue is that the backlight keyboard is not working correctly. In fact, it is not working at all. My assumption is that it stopped working when it had a a display assembly replacement in 2010. My wife not behing to technical realized she did not had this feature when I bought a MBA 13" last year. It could be something with the system (OS) but I'm pretty sure it is not. I open the back of the case to see if something (a missing wire connectivity) could be found, but none step to my eyes. I did not want to dismantle everything in case I'll be making it worst!
The second issue is the trackpad. She told me many times that her mouse was not working as expected, and when I looked at, I finally found that the problem was not the mouse, but the trackpad. What I found is that the trackpad button, sometimes, stayed pressed. If that happen, eventually, the mouse is acting very trangely! My wife never uses the trackpad, so I can't figure out it is an abuse of it. To temporaly resolve the issue, I dissabled the trackpad when a mouse is connected in the Universal access system pref.
I plan to have it send to the Apple store next time I go near one. The Apple Care is expired...
    My questions are:
any idea of what may be the problem and is it repairable easily by myself?
Could it be that the trackpad is broken in anyway?
Could it be possible that the technician forgot to reconnect a cable near the keyboard (under the motherboard) that prevent the backlight to work?
    Thanks

  • Macbook Air late 2008 running extremely slow

I just bought a Macbook Air late 2008 online & when i recieved it it had been wiped out and set back to it's original favroty settings. The battery is completely dead so it must be charged at all times. Everytime I use the laptop it is extremely slow & laggy. When opening apps, typing, watching videos, everything. I upgraded to the new Mavericks software available at apple.com hoping it would fix the problem but it didnt, & the laptop is still just as slow. Also everytime i turn the laptop on the date & time are set back to Jan 2008. I am a new mac user & I have no idea how to fix this problem.

  • Macbook Pro late 2008 with Mavericks gets Grey screen of death.

    Hey guys..
When Mavericks was released, I updated my old Macbook Pro (late 2008) 2.8ghz on work, and since then I have had a couple of Grey Screen of Deaths.
I had none of those before Mavericks, so I guess thats the source of the problem.
I've been trying to figure out what might cause it, from the crash log below, but I can't seem to figure anything from it, so I was hoping you guys could help me?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to be a kernel panic, caused by some PowerManagement from kernel_task. But how do one fix that?

    I am  having similair issues :  MBP 4.1  2008
It does not want to reboot at all .
Stops with the grey screen .Spinning wheel / gear stops spinning  and Mac reboots automaticly to.... get stuck again .
Ive tried the recovery : No automatic reboot  But same screen : ( grey , stuck stopped spinning wheel)   some how it enters Disk Utility  because I can trigger the voice that ask for the language etc.  (I left it there overnight  without result )  I dont see DU on screen  ( tried second monitor : No luck )
Did a hardware test : No issues
Did single user logon  :   fsck   : No problems with the drive ( after 2 runs ) ( 1st runs : changes were made )
Did Logon Verbose status :  Initial messages :  shutdown reasons : code 128 ...   now followed by code 3
Tried to reinstall the original OSX ( 2008 )   No luck : grey screen changes to darker screen coming in from the top asking to reboot the system .
1st real bad signal was : When donwloading Maverick ( again )  to create a bootable USB  the screen started flickering ( this started when pressing the download button ???  - I had to reboot the mac to stop
    2 days later :
Last Live activity with this mac was : Trying to create maverick Bootable  USB  using diskmaker X )   During this activty the mac died on me .
I have a full time machine backup : so no worries about data...I hope  )
This mac is one of the lucky ones with the bad NVDIA 8600m gt cards ... after upgrarding in march 2013 to Lion ..it crashed on me with the black screen of death ...Since apple stopped the guarantee I baked it in the oven at 200 c for 7 minutes  . For the last  months it was working Fine  .   ( Hardware check shows no issues  - and upon reboot it chimes happy ..)
What could be my next options ?  ( Obvious buying a new one ... This  is allready launched as an idea .   I need more creative thoughts :-)

  • MacBook Air wifi internet shared network not working on tethered android phone GT B5122

MacBook Air wifi internet shared network not working on tethered android phone GT B5122
I have created a password protected wifi internet network on my Macbook air. I tethered by Andriod phone onto this network, but the internet connection works intermittently on the phone, and when it stops working the network continues to show as connected to the shared network mostly(other times it keeps renewing the wifi IP address on the Andriod phone).
Also the network the MBA is connected to, is a hardwired one using a SSH login account in a student accomadations.
I am not sure, but all the restarting and refreshing of system, phone and wifi sharing and re-enabling wifi is not reparing the internet connecting on the wifi network for the phone
Really puzzled, if this is one of the Apple, Andriod compatability issues.
    Cheers,
    Vivek

    Hi.
I'm having trouble with the wireless connection on my new home hub 3. Most devices will connect easily, but there are three devices that have trouble connecting. These are an Android Phone (Samsung Galaxy Mini), an android tablet (Sony Tablet S) and an iPod. All of these devices work perfectly on other network connections, and other devices in the house are quite happy connecting to the network.
The Androids can see the network, and will try to connect to it, but when they do they just go through a loop of "connecting">>"acquiring IP address">>"disconnected". I have tried resetting the Home Hub with a pin, and that lets the devices connect for about 24 hours, but after that time they stop connecting again.
I'm really not sure what to do to fix the problem, so I will very much appreciate some help.
    Many Thanks.
My lads SGMini connects perfectly to our hub3
Have you installed the BTFon app to these devices?
If so, you could delete it and then see what hapens.....

  • Remote install OSX fails on MacBook Air (late 2008)

I'm trying to reinstall OSX on my old MacBook Air so I can sell it and upgrade to the new one. I have done this procedure before, but now it doesn't complete. When I reboot the Air holding down the option key, it reboots and gives me a choice of using the internal disk or the remote disk, and I choose the remote. It does not give me any further options (like the optional installs, disk utility, etc) and appears to run, but it winds up just rebooting as my old user as if I were just rebooting the machine instead of doing a reinstall.
I've done it several times (like 20!!) trying slightly different things each time. The only difference is that sometimes it doesn't recognize the remote disk and I have to start again. I've also tried partitioning the Air hard drive, but it won't partition, and I've tried making a disc image of the OSX CD on an external drive and booting from there, but it is not recognized as a viable startup disc (the DMG is fine tho).
I've also tried resetting factory settings cmdoption+shiftpower, and resetting the PRAM, cmdoption+PR. That didn't help either.
I spoke to an Apple rep on the phone who didn't know what else to do, but suggested that there may be something to do with the fact that the Air is running Snow Leopard (which I don't have the discs for right now) and the original bootup discs are OS 10.5 (Leopard).
Anyone have any suggestions? I really don't want to sell the thing unless I have erased all my old user info--this should be pretty simple and straightforward, taking less than an hour to complete, but so far I have spent over 12 hrs on it!

I finally got this to work, so I thought I'd share the specifics for posterity... the fix was dependent on one or both of the following two steps:
    1. Grasping at straws, I switched from the 10.6 install disc back to the 10.5 "MacBook Air" install disc, but obtained exactly the same result as previously.
    2. Finally, I reset the PRAM / NVRAM by turning the machine off and booting with the command-option-p-r keys held down.
As soon as the MBA began the reboot cycle that follows the PRAM reset, I held down the option key again, to take another stab at the Remote Install process that failed so many times before. Only this time it worked. I'm not sure if it was step #2 only, or #1 and #2 in conjunction that did it, but I'm not going to sink another several hours into the experimental determination.
Just to be clear about what was happening before the fix: Like Passion.LY, I would boot the MBA while holding the option key (and with the Remote Install app running on the other machine, DVD sharing enabled, etc.), and that would at least get me to the network selection screen. After successfully joining the network, the remote install disc would appear, and I would select it. Some very tentative "seek" noises would be emitted from the optical drive across the room, while the MBA displayed the Apple logo screen for about a minute (with a spinning globe icon instead of the usual twirl icon). Then, very quickly and almost imperceptibly, a large "slashed circle" symbol (of the sort that would indicate "no" or "prohibited" on signage) would flash on the screen, followed by the standard Apple logo / twirl icon -- as the system proceeded to boot from the hard drive as though nothing else had been done.
Success was obvious when instead of the the "no" symbol I was treated to a much louder sequence of optical drive access sounds, for the duration of a rather lengthy boot process.
All this for a few minutes in disk utility... Apple should really consider making a small recovery partition part of the standard OS install -- or at least put one in for MBA users -- whose shared optical drives that feel especially "remote" (and ephemeral) at times like this, and who can no longer fall back on Firewire target disk mode... Nostalgic stuff, that.

    Thanks for your response.
I have tried creating a new account but it didn't fix the problelm.
    How do i safe boot?
when you say "safe booting" do you mean restarting/shutdown and restart?  because i restarted my macbook air while holding down the shift key while it was starting up but there was not luck either, the problem was still there when i restarted it again.

  • I am unable to open my MacBook Air cause my password is not working

I am attempting to log on to my MacBook Air.  My password, which I have been using since I purchased the computer, is not working.  How can I find out why this is happening?

What are you setting it up as.. join wireless network .. the very worst setup, it will disappear.. reboot the whole network in order modem. router TC.. clients and it will likely reappear.
Tell us what network setup you are using..
If you setup with cable to a computer completely isolated from the network with TC also isolated.. finish the setup of everything you want. .before update.. then plug it into the network. .then restart everything in correct order.. it will work most of the time.

  • Hi . I recently updated my macbook air late 2008 to 10.7.0 from 10.6.8 . My google chrome , itunes and some other apps are not working .

i want to update to 10.7.1 , so i download the update from apple.com but its not installing " saying can't be installed on my disk . What to do ?
i all ready tried download the update again and again .... because i read somewhere in apple support that the update should be of more than 70mb but mine is of 60 or 58mb . Suggest me a way to update .

If you use Software Update it will designate the 10.7.1 specific for your model, and may miss somethings.  It is better to download the update straight off Apple's website.  Mind you, unless you know your software is not compatible with 10.7.2 or later, I recommend at minimum upgrading to 10.7.3.  That's where I found to be my happy medium with.   Run repair permisssion with Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility when you are finished.  If you have any third party cache cleaning software remove it.   Especially remove MacKeeper if that got installed using these directions since it has given people more headaches than any.  The only utility you need is a backup utility.   And periodically let the machine stay awake running screen saver instead of energy saver.  This will keep the logfiles clean.  The combo updates are better than the delta updates.  Combo updates do multiple updates at once.

  • MacBook Air (Late 2008) WI-FI no hardware installed

Last week all was well...On Friday I learned that the FBI turned off servers that were responsible for DNS changes.  I now believe that I was using a rouge server.  My wifi no longer works.  I have rebooted and reset the PRAM and NVRAM as well as resetting the SCM.
I have Lion 10.7.4 for an OS.
Any ideas short of a trip to Apple???
    Thanks in advance...

You have made a great effort to help me with this problem. Unfortunately the first thing the recovery does is try to get a broadband connection   Without that connection the reinstall will not proceed.
So we are now taking the Mac to the Apple store for a look see.
Thanks again for all your time and effort.  I will let you know what they say and do.
