I have an iPhone 5 16gb purchased in US in March 2013, now I see that sleep/wake button doesnt work. Searched on web and found out that is an hardware issue, and booked a meeting to Apple store. I think they will replace it, but the problem which may me doubt is that the iphone is bought in US from my friend, and now I live in Netherlands.

i have an iphone 5 that i traded with from a family member. its has coverage but now the sleep/wake button doesnt work sometimes. can apple replace my iphone and give me a new one or is it just something they can repair? i dont have the box or recipit to apple care or the iphone
Apple can fix it without your receipt or box. They pull the serial number from the device and determine warranty status from that. Hopefully ApplCare was registered to the product before you lost the receipt though. If not, you can go back to the point of purchase and obtain your AppleCare receipt and Apple can help attach it to the iPhone.

By the slide to unlock screen, are you talking about the slider at the bottom of the screen after taking out of sleep mode?
And by trying the sleep/wake button and home button, are you talking about a reboot by holding both the power/sleep button and the home button until the apple logo appears and it reboots? And that does not help release the issue with the slider?
Are you sure the iPhone is well charged?
If none if this helps, have you tried syncing/backing up to a compter and then restore by iTunes on a computer?
If you cannot do any of this it would be good to schedule a visit to an Apple store genius bar and have the techs try their hand and diagnostics. -

First, you don't have a 5+ year old 3GS. The 3GS has only been around for under 4 years. In fact, 5 years ago there were NO iPhones; the original iPhone (2 generations before the 3GS) came out on June 29, 2007 - not quite 5 years ago. The 3GS was released June 19, 2009.
That aside, you can sync multiple phones to one computer - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495. boogeyman is wrong. Unless somebody else has a micracle workaround I don't know. Probably get the phone in for repair since it has been living on borrowed time so far and now you absolutely must have a working button.

You can use the Power button to wake the iPod so yu cn then unlock the iPod.
Next try connecting the iPod to your computer and try to restore via iTunes.
You can also use theis program to place the iPod in recovery mode without using switches.

If yuo have iOS 5 you can, when the iPod is working, use Assistive Touch accessibility feature to do most functions without the Home button. (Settings>General>Accessibility>Assistive Touch).

Try the following:
- A reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
- Restore from backup
- Restore to factory settings/new iPod. -
