I push the on button on the back of the computer to start it and it blinks grey once then doesnt do anything. Any help?

SNOW iMAC DV 500 mHz won't start

I upgraded to 4.1.9 and installed 10.4.6 so I could run new software.
Worked fine until several Power failures by Edison this week. Now will not restart from the button on front; not even a tone; just a click and flash of light sometimes.
Acts like a latching relay isn't pulling in. I changed to new 3.6 v 1/2 AA battery; zapped all the things listed and still not even a flicker from the screen; sound from the drive; etc.

IMac 20in intel2.66gh won't start up!

My iMac 20in intel 2.66gh won't start up. When I turn the power on the screen stays black and a tone sounds 1-3 times at approx 2 second intervals. Does any one have any solutions I can try before I pack it up and take to my nearest apple store. Thanks. Merilee

Before taking it to the workshop, you could try unplugging the modules, cleaning the RAM bay with a vacuum cleaner and then re-seating the chips. It's an easy thing to do - Youtube has plenty of 'How to's'. Make sure the Mac is switched off and unplugged first.

The short answer is here. Looks like your RAM is bad.
1 tone, repeating every 5 seconds: This indicates no RAM is installed.
3 successive tones, a 5 second pause (repeating): This indicates RAM does not pass a data integrity check.
1 long tone while holding down the power button: Indicates an EFI ROM update is in progress on a computer manufactured before 2012.
3 long tones, 3 short tones, 3 long tones: Indicates EFI ROM corruption is detected and the computer is in EFI ROM recovery mode.

HELP! My Mother in Law's IMAC - OS 10.3 won't start in safe mode!

She had a power outage last night, with the computer on. She just gets a screen with the apple and spinning gear. We can't start it in safe mode or with the install disc. She got something when we started up in single user mode, but she said there was no place to type in any commands - just lots of writing that does not make sense to us. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

IMac G5 (iSight model) won't start up - video included

An imac 1.9Ghz G5 won't boot up at all. When you press the power button you hear a sight whirr and then a faint high pitched hum. Sometimes the power light turns on for a second in unison with the attempt. I tried to reset the SMU but that did nothing.
I took the cover off and saw nothing obvious wrong.
At the 3 and 8 second mark in the video you can hear the sounds it makes but you may have to turn up the volume.
Is this symptomatic of a dead power supply or some other problem? Any solutions to get it working again?

iMacs with an iSight have no back to them. You remove the face of the computer to access the logic board and the screen has to be removed to get to that. So all that stuff in the apple knowledgebase article can't be done to this model.

IMac Summer 2000 G3 won't start up. No green light!

Our beloved old iMac (listed below) has simply died on us. The green power light won't light up and we get no sound when it's pressed, nothing. At first it blinked then shut down and now won't blink anymore. All I get is a blank screen as if no power was booting up. A power cable check and replacement didn't help.
Recent history: We frequently got problems with the date and time. I had always isolated that issue as a weak PRAM battery. We got an error message that the date was wrong i.e., Jan 1 1971. An attempt to correct it didn't help. The error message said that the PMU needed to be updated. We downloaded some Apple software but it turned out it was for 0S 9. Yesterday we had some issues such as the iMac wouldn't shut down and woud suddenly go to sleep instead. Then today it just wouldn't start up, period.
My suspicion is it's either the power supply or the PRAM battery. But the battery is only 2 years old and normally their life span is longer than that. I have an old Mac IIVX with a PRAM battery I can dig out of it. This is my first workaround.
I know others here have recently posted similar problems and this may sound redundant, but I'm doing the workaround and will post the results. If anyone can conjecture on this battery issue or if that fails and you think it's the power supply then please let know where I can get a new one. Otherwise I'm going to try to find one on Ebay.

I was quoting in euroes which is higher than dollars. I'm not sure what the euro to dollar rate is now but the dollar is pretty weak. I live in Europe, shoulda mentioned that. The weak dollar keeps all Apple products relatively low and has for the past decade or so. And yes it was a local authorized Apple dealer, not a box store. I've looked at them and their prices are a bit higher and you don't get the reliable warranty service. They've got the Apple trademark selling area but walk a few yards and you can get a Dell. I think Apple rents them the space, but most people I know buy at authorized Apple dealers where you can customize your order and have good service on warranty. I don't have an official Apple Store here, I wish I did but sofar there aren't any in continental Europe I know of. Maybe one in London.
For the iMac G5 17in 1.83 MHz with 512MB RAM 160GB HD and no Superdrive the asking retail price is around 979 euroes. The 2MHz Core Duo with 1GB RAM, Superdrive and two FireWire 800 ports goes for around 1,117 euroes. The 20in starts around 1,300 euroes.

My wife just shrugged and decided to break down and shop for a new one. It's too much bother to do a DIY repair that big. We figured we could salvage some of it for its parts and resell them on eBay. I stole some RAM and the fresh PRAM battery out of it for my G4. The HD will be removed and wiped. Maybe resold. I've seen a G3 motherboard on eBay but you don't know what you're getting. I stop at buying used RAM and power supply units.

eBay USA has a full range of Mac parts. I saw a G3/G4 power supply unit that was going unsold for $12 today. Could use that to fix up the Blue and White but the shipping to Europe is $35 and I can buy one here on eBay for 45 euroes plus shipping.

Logic pro 9 additional content won't install and iMac 27" late 2012 won't start in Safe Mode

I have bought Logic Pro 9 and have encountered problems installing the Additional Content pack. I am using late 2012 iMac 27" (with fusion 3TB drive) and OS X Mavericks (10.9.1).
For some reason the Additional Content pack does not install when downloaded from Logic Pro menu and it does not install either when using the .dmg file. I noticed that many users are facing the same problem, but they have resolved the issue installing the Additional Content in Safe Mode. However, my iMac does not boot in Safe Mode (other users are encountering this annoying problem and it remains unresolved by Apple, see https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5485131?start=0&tstart=0).
This is extremely frustating, because I am using my iMac for my work and therefore it is impossible to backup my data reinstall the OS X. Additionally, I am using the computer for my music projects and I am completely stuck, because I cannot use insrument patches that I need.
Does anyone have solution for this?

Install on my Core2Duo 17" MacBook Pro went flawlessly, but install on my 8 Core Mac Pro suffered this problem. Many thanks for the solution Don, it worked for me ;-)
I am trying hard to supress an ironic chuckle though, reading other posts in this thread .... suggesting that people should call Apple Tech Support and expressing incredulity that people weren't doing this as their first option.
Well I can say say that after several calls to Apple Tech Support, amounting to several hours on the phone, and well over an hour on the phone with them today, I was informed that this problem is a known bug, and that Apple are working on a solution. They couldn't tell me what the bug is, what machines are affected, or what else might trigger it, or when a bug release might be due.
Their troubleshooting steps basically involved various reboots, repairing disc permissions, reseting the user home directory via terminal, booting up in recovery mode (but not safe mode as per this solution) trashing various preferences files, and, as a final step, uninstalling and reinstalling from scratch.
Only when all that failed was I told that there is a known bug that Apple are working on.
I came here to see what the community was saying, as the Tech Support guy did say there was likely to be some info on the forums. Lo and behold, a solution is posted and it works.
Why are Apple's Tech Support (in the UK at least) not aware of this?
Oh well, at least I'm up and running on my Mac Pro now.

IMac dead, grey screen, won't start from disks

I'm sure this is going to go over familiar territory.   We have a housefull of Macs and have had for a long time, and I'm fairly used to hunting down issues. This particular one is a problem I've fortunately not seen before. I suspect a serious hardware problem, but only got a look at it once it was fairly advanced.
My teen son was using this computer, a 21" iMac, I think from 2007 (it was a hand me down from his Mac-savvy Grandma).   He says that it was freezing on him for the last week or two, and he'd have to restart. Then a couple of days ago when he restarted he got a folder icon with a ?, so he took the install discs and reinstalled the OS, which was 10.4.   Yes, at this point he'd already goofed, because he'd gone over his data, and though he had an external HD, he had not used it with Time Machine for several months. I don't know what he was thinking, but he's 16...he probably was not.
This was where I finally came in. Yes, get old Dad involved once an issue has reached the crisis stage. :-\
At that point his desktop showed a fresh install of 10.4, which we wanted to update at least, and possibly retrieve his last Time Machine, but I figured there was likely an underlying problem.   Disk utility showed that the disk needed repairing, but I figured that needed to be done from an install disk, and for good measure, I should probably run the Hardware Test as well.
Now things got complicated, because I have been unable to get the computer to start from any install disk I've tried. We have two sets of original install disks from this generation of iMacs (two similar computers), and complete install discs for 10.5 and 10.6, as well as Disk Doctor.   The computer refuses to start up from any of them, with either 'C' or 'D' held down, nor will it start up in Safe Mode. And now the fresh install of 10.4 has disappeared as well.
All that occurs on restart, after the 'bong' is a grey screen. If a disk is in the optical drive, there is a brief sound of it spinning up, then silence for a good while, maybe 2 mins, then the disk is spit out. Nothing more. I have zapped the PRAM or whatever it's called these days, with no change.
We did have an external DVD drive somewhere and I'd like to try that, in case there's a problem with the optical drive itself, but I am thinking this computer may have both disk and hardware issues.

Hi, sounds like the Hard Drive is dying, & that can prevent booting up.
Hold alt key on bootup, what shows as boot choices?
Have you unplugged all peripherals, cords, & AC power, let sit 30 minutes & try just with AC connected?
If you don't know the model, find the Serial# & use it on one of these sites, but don't post the Serial# here...

Tough without the Install disc, but some things to try...
Does it boot to Single User Mode, CMD+s keys at bootup, if so try...
/sbin/fsck -fy
Repeat until it shows no errors fixed.
(Space between fsck AND -fy important).
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck...

IMac update crashes computer won't start anyone else having this issue?

The latest update keeps causing my iMac to restart over and over the first word that comes up when it begins to restart is "panic" I'm guessing that's not a good sign!
I'm disgusted that there is no 24hour AppleCare service available, what am I supposed to do until business hours tomorrow. Not good enough Apple!

If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. 2012 iMac 10.7.3 Won't start up

Just recieved the "Please turn machine off by holding power button" error... now my machine won't turn on. It makes the chime, loads the status bar about 10% then turns off. Tried starting in safe mode: no luck. Held Shift+cmd+V and it loaded most of the text, as expected, but then turned off again without completion.
I did try veryfying and repairing disk permissions on a disk a few hours prior... which failed. But I was merely browsing on Safari when the initial error appeared.

I'm not sure I understand your response, but the machine has a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have it tested.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the Lion recovery partition, if present.

IMac 20" (ealry 2006) won't start - No chime

After starting my friend's iMac using the "option" method to choose a volume to startup with... (he was experiencing the "?" flashing folder) I selected the Macintosh HD and then clicked the arrow. The system just went into a black screen and the hard drive spun... it just stayed liked that. I powered it down holding the power button in.. then restarted. Now what it does is it initiatlly turns on (the while power light comes on) for about 3 seconds and then powers down immediately...
Anyone have any thoughts?

Well then he has more serious issues. You can try doing a SMC reset however I think that's futile. I suspect either his power supply has died or possibly the logic board. My recommendation at this point is to make an appointment with a AASP and take it in for service. Get a quote, if it's over $500 my recommendation is to begin shopping for a new iMac. If he's interested in that Apple Refurbs are a terrific deal!

IMac acting strange now won't start only 3 months old

This has just happened. Whilst doing some encoding a message suddenly appeared saying I had to restart. Everything had sort of froze. So I restart and get to the apple logo but then a grey screen comes down saying restart again and big lines of code appear.
Straight away booked in for genius appointment but that's not till wednesday. Anyone know what's happened?it's a 24" iMac. 4 g ram. Only 4 months old.
Before this I've noticed other little things like apps not responding and the famous beachball. Not to good for a £1200 mac!!!

IMac won't start up with iPod plugged in?

Just bought a new imac, and it's working perfectly. It reads my iPod with no problems, but i've noticed that when I turn my iMac on sometimes, it won't start up. Just kinda stays at the beginning white screen.
It only does it when my iPod is plugged in, however. ( 60GB iPod video ) Anyone think there might be a reason? I'd be very grateful if anyone could help me with this, it's somewhat bothersome to have to make sure to eject my iPod before restarting.

Thank you for your support and time, but im afraid my problem still persists. A friend suggested I check what other files I had on the iPod, but none of them seem like they would interfere with the startup.

My Old Imac Won't start

I have an old Imac. Suddenly it won't start. It's the one with the 1/2 soccer ball base and the flat screen. All I see is an apple and a whirling gear-shaped thing. How do I make it wake up? I have no idea, but all my system 9 junk is in it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! Try holding down the shift key as you startup up. Hold it down unitl it gets to the login screen to be sure it completes the disk check. Or boot from the install disc and repair the Hard Drive. Tom
