There will indeed be taxes, assuming you are in an area where sales tax is normally charged.

My iPhone when disconnected from iTunes shows that I do not have any music on it, but when I connect it to iTunes it all shows up under my phone.

If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply.

You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). What you normally should do is go back the retailer from whom you purchased the card and discuss the problem with them. They should either correctly activate the card or give you a new one. If they refuse to help, as some retailers do, or this was a gift so you cannot contact the retailer, go here:

and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store.

You don't go to the drop down "Actions" menu to reply to a post. You find the post to which you would like to reply and you hit the "Reply" button. You then type your message and then hit the "Add Reply" button to post your reply.

Credit balances do not expire. First, make sure you're logged into the iTunes Store using the account ID and password you set up, or used, when you redeemed your cards. If you are, try signing out of the account and back in.
If you're sure you are using the correct account and that you're signing in to the iTunes Store, and signing out and back in doesn't help, go to the Purchase History and review your purchases to make sure that you should indeed have a balance left. iTunes doesn't always refresh the balance it shows, so it's possible you spent the money and it just wasn't being reflected in the display, thought it would be unlikely that you spent the entire balance unless you have a credit card on file as well.
If you confirm that you should have balance left but the iTunes Store isn't showing it correctly, go here:

and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store.

Any purchases and downloads associated with an apple id are forever tied to that apple id. You can not merge any content, purchases, or info between the two accounts.
