TS1538 ipod classic 160 gb. unable to restore or format. tried all the recommended steps. no go. Any suggestions?

ipod classic 160 gb. Unable to Restore.  Also cannot format via C:\ right click on drive and Format.  Have tried all the recommended steps I can find. No luck. Any suggestions?

do you need an internet connection to do a restore? (after downloading the software of course)
I can't get to a different connection until Friday night...
It doesn't seem like the antivirus and whatnot made any difference.
what kind of hardware problem do you think it is/would it be fixable or would I have to buy a whole new ipod?
I think the harddrive is still okay... it feels the same vibration wise now as it was when it was working fine- no awkward clicking or movements like I experienced when my old laptop's harddrive crashed.

I have a 4th gen iPod touch that won't power up! I tried all the traditional stuff. I want to know how to tell if the battery is good. itunes see's the ipod in recovery mode. Tried dfu mode and did not work. Any ideas? I can hear the PC beep when plugging it in! I suspect a bad battery and trying to charge it ina wall charger made it hot!

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order. The appointment is free.

• IPod Classic 160 GB refuses to restore

I was using this iPod on a Macbook Pro last night, doing a transfer on Music Rescue. Halfway through the transfer the program crashed, and my iPod's data got corrupted.
I hooked it up to my Macbook Pro and the computer wouldn't recognize it. I then hooked it up to a PC and formatted the disk (because iTunes wouldn't restore it) to a exFAT setting. Then, back to the Macbook and formatted again to Mac OS X Extended Journaled.
Now iTunes at least recognizes it, but still can't restore it. I get the error message that my iPod is busy and can't be restored. When I put it into Disk Mode and try to restore it, it gets all the way through, the progress bar fills up and then boom, "Unkown Error occured" with no code.
The iPod itself displays all the normal screens, but when I turn it on it shows there is no music, no videos, no anything, and yet when I go to Settings > About, it first showed that my iPod was completely full, and yet had no music, and now it says 0 KB free and 0 KB used.
I have been at this for hours, I just want my iPod back. I can't send it back to Apple because it got run over by a car a few months ago. That has never been an issue for performance, so I don't see why it would be now.
Somebody help me!

Well, looks like after a bunch of connecting, disconnecting, formatting, and restoring attempts, it finally just worked! Anyone who has this issue, if it looks like your iTunes freezes in the middle of the restore process, DONT QUIT! Just let it run for a few minutes. It'll work.

• My ipod classic 160 has a red circle with a X in the middle how do I get it to work?

My ipod classic stopped working.  It has a red circle with a X in the middle. I've troubleshooted but still can not get it to work.

Hi Mildred,
Happy Holidays!
The resource below will explain the steps you can take to resolve the issue you are having with your iPod classic.
iPod Displays a Red "X" Icon - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203170
The first step is to download the latest version of iTunes on your Mac or PC.  Then try the steps below.
Restore iPod from Disk Mode
Disconnect iPod from your computer.
Manually put iPod into Disk Mode.
Open the latest version of iTunes and connect iPod.
Restore iPod.
Setup Service for iPod
If you cannot force your iPod into disk mode and restore it, then your iPod may need service. Click one of the links below to setup an iPod Service Request online or make a reservation at the Genius Bar before visiting your local Apple Retail Store.

iPod devices with a Click Wheel
If necessary, verify that your iPod has a Click Wheel.
Before placing the iPod into Disk Mode, verify that it is charged.
Toggle the Hold switch on and off (set it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons for at least six seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
When the Apple logo appears, release the Menu and Select buttons and immediately press and hold the Select and the Play/Pause buttons until the Disk Mode screen appears.
Connect the iPod to your computer; the screen on the iPod will should say "Do not disconnect".
If you are having difficulty putting your iPod into Disk Mode, set it on a flat surface. Make sure that the finger pressing the Select button is not touching the Click Wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Play/Pause button toward the outside of the Click Wheel and not near the center. If you are still unable to put your iPod into Disk Mode, use one finger from one hand to press the Select button, and one finger from the other hand to press the Play/Pause button.

Restoring iPod to factory settings - Apple Support
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201540
It's important to understand the difference between updating and restoring. Updating simply installs the software that controls iPod and does not affect the songs and files stored on iPod's disk. Restoring erases the iPod's disk and restores iPod to its original factory condition.
Warning: Because restoring erases all the songs and files on iPod, back up any files you've saved on the iPod disk. All of your songs, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, and games can be loaded back to your iPod provided that you have them stored in your iTunes Library.
How to restore iPod
Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
Click Restore.
If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen, indicating that stage one of the restore process has begun. When this stage is done, iTunes will present one of two messages with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see, because the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
After stage two of the restore process is complete, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear. It will ask you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences, as it did when you connected your iPod for the first time.
I hope this information helps ...

• TS1502 My iPod Classic is shutting down iTunes, blue screening my computer (windows7) and restarting it... any suggestions?

I hadnt used my iPod in awhile, so when I tried to sync it, the libraries didnt match up and to avoid hassle I decided to restore it (using the option on itunes when you plug in your device).
After restoring, I tried to connect to iTunes again. While it said 'syncing iPod' on my device, it froze iTunes. Within seconds, my computer crashed and a blue screen came up. I restarted my computer and tried to sync again, with the same result. I should also mention that upon plugging it in, my computer comes up with a box saying check device, hardware problems. I click 'find solution/check for problems' but they always come back negative. I've searched for and tried many options:
Starting it in safe mode, disk use, not allowing auto sync. Rebooting my iPod (hold down menu+center). Rebooting then connecting while the apple logo is displayed. Tried different USB cables. iTunes help said to check for driver updates on my computer, and all are fine.
If my iPod can just stop working for no apparant reason (its not like it took a late night toilet bowl swim) how I can determine if its toast or I'm just trying the wrong things? Suggestions, please??!!!

• Always crashing. Now unable to open it. Tried all the suggestions.

Firefox has been crashing all last year. A fresh reload of windows7 and firefox has not solved the problem. Different anti-virus programs have found no malware. Different "Pup virus" detectors have found nothing. I have tried every suggestion in troubleshooting, but still crashing. Now I cannot open firefox. I think that a clever infection has stalled the browser permanently. Will have to change to another browser, for reliability.

Sorry you are having problems, but hopefully they may be solvable.
If it is malware you have not yet successfully found and removed two things to bear in mind are that
# Some malware affects multiple browsers.
#Malware may continue to damage your computer, data or security.
So just switching browsers may not be much of a solution. My suggestions are as follows
#Try a clean reinstall of Firefox. That involves removing its program files (NOT the profile files).
# Then run scans again with multiple and fully up to date tools.
# If you then get crashes please report what the crash IDs are.
#Please explain how you get on by posting back to detail what you have tried and what the results were.
===Clean Reinstall===
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a Clean reinstall. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
Note: You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from mozilla.org (or choose the download for your operating system and language from this page) and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu and click the close button ).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
#*Windows:
#**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
#**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*Mac: Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*Linux: If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see Installing Firefox on Linux. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the Firefox download page, simply remove the folder firefox in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found here.
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not use a third party uninstaller as part of this process. Doing so could permanently delete your Firefox profile data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u> See Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles.
Thanks
=== Crash IDs ===
We're sorry to hear that Firefox is crashing. In order to assist you better, please follow the steps below to provide us crash IDs to help us learn more about your crash.
#Enter about:crashes in the Firefox address bar and press Enter. A Submitted Crash Reports list will appear, similar to the one shown below.
#Copy the 5 most recent Report IDs that start with bp- and then go back to your forum question and paste those IDs into the "Post a Reply" box.
Note: If a recent Report ID does not start with bp- click on it to submit the report.

• Currently im using Mozilla 3.6.10 and I have tried all the above step even unable to delete browsed history

Firefox Version-3.6.10
Operating System-Windows XP

Maybe you should update to the last Firefox 3.6.28 version.
You can find the latest Firefox release in all languages and for all Operating Systems here:
*Firefox 3.6: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
A possible cause is a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.
See "Basic Troubleshooting: Make a new profile":
If the new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile, but be careful not to copy corrupted files.

Been trying to restore Ipod touch for days after updating Itunes. Error code #9. Stuck on restore screen. Tried all the solutions posted. Tried on 2 computers, Vista + XP. No device shown on computer. Thanks Apple! Didn't have this problem before update. How about rolling back your update?

Error 9
This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if you manually disconnect the device during the restore process. You can resolve this issue by using USB troubleshooting, using a different Dock Connector or Lightning Connector to USB cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.

• How do I get my computer to recognize my iPod touch? I have tried all the steps already.

How do I get my computer to recognize my iPod touch? I have tried all the support steps online already.

Did you do everthing here including removing and reinstalling all the the Apple software using the instruction within?
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
Then try another computer to help determine if the problem is a compter or iPod problem.

• Discussion: backing up or restoring from my Ipod Classic 160

Recently I had a hard disk problem on my PC and had a new disk installed as H drive. I use Windows XP home edition and H is now the start up drive.
The previous hard disk remains as C drive.
I have had major problems restoring the backed up music from an external hard drive that I thought had my entire music library backed up. But apparently not so.
Anyway, right now I am satisfied that my Ipod Classic 160 has my entire music library (approx 12000 songs) on it and is working satisfactorily. (I purchased the Ipoc Classic 160 earlier this year to replace a defective Ipod Classic 120 and at that time the Itunes library synched perfectly with the new Ipod.
Similarly, when I open Itunes it shows my music library and playlists as they should be.
I have purchased a third party software (CopyTrans) with the view of restoring my Ipod and its contents and hopefully again synchronising it with Itunes.
But I am not sure the best way to go. I dread the thought of doing something that could compromise the data on my Ipod Classic 160 because it seems the only place where my entire music library is intact.
I can't explain how or why files are missing from my hard disk (H drive) or external back up (J drive).
I've contacted Apple support and they have been most helpful as far as they can be. They can't assist with advice of getting the data back from my Ipod Classic 160 and again synchronising with Itunes.
I am conscious of the old saying that a little knowledge is sometimes worse than none at all and am rather nervous about what I need to do so any advice or assistanct would be appreciated.
Thanks in anticipation
Paul in Melbourne (Australia)

I think I know what you're trying to do, and I know how to do it, but I'm not entirely sure. if you want the songs, pictures, etc. that are on your iPod to transfer to your computer, there is a way of doing that simply through the computer its self. without buying anything. it's entirely free and legal. and then if I'm understanding correctly, you have an external hard drive that you want all of those songs on. so if I were to tell you how to take the songs from your iPod, put them on your computer, and then move them from your computer to an external hard drive, would that answer your question? because, if so, I can tell you how to do that, but if thats not the answer you're looking for, then I can't be sure exactly what the question is that you're asking. sorry, hope I can be of help..

• I have had to restore my ipod classic 160, and now i get an error mess.

I get an error message that says , The ipod 160gb pod cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified.
i've tryed all the steps in trouble shooting from restarting , updating , uninstall - reinstall itunes nothing seems to get rid of this message . were do i go from here.

Read this Apple Support Article, which says one of the many causes are plug-ins which are in conflict with iTunes.
You can disable any plug-ins not manufactured by Apple by opening iTunes in Safe Mode. This is done by holding down the Shift and Control keys (on Windows) while opening iTunes.
