TS1538 it keeps telling me to unplug it and try again and i keep getting the same message.  I cannot register this iphone on my new computer help!

my daugher received an old iphone (now being used as an ipod) from a friend and i am trying to set it up on my computer.  i erased it and restored it to factory settings.  I used to get a message that my computer didn't recognize it so unplug and try again.  I did that and it didn't work.  Now when i plug it in i don't get a message at all, nothing happens.  the iphone itself says to plug into itunes which i did and it is not showing up.  why does apple make this so difficult???? why can't i just register it ???? there is no option on the phone or itunes to do that. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello robodowd
There are a few things that can be done. First check the settings on your iPhone to ensure a proper connection to the iTunes and App Store. If everything is set and that does not work, then you can force a restore by following the steps highlighted below to restore your iPhone.
Can't connect to the iTunes Store
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1368
iOS: Forgotten passcode or device disabled after entering wrong passcode
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1212
Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to shut down.
While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
Continue holding the Home button until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
iTunes will alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then restore the device.
