TS1538 Problems updating iphone 3gs software.
I am attempting to update the software on my iphone 3gs but when i click "check for updates" on itunes, it tells me that my current software (4.2.1) is up to date! Please help, it's very frustrating as I can't even use the facebook app! I am clueless about most things apple so have no idea what avenues to explore to sort it out.
Thanks Jess.
If you have a recent backup of your phone (meaning you sync regularly) after you restore the phone you can restore that backup.

Hello Amarchand Sharma,
Are you working with a Windows computer? If so, the resource below may help you troubleshoot the issue you are having restoring your iPhone.

ITunes 9.2.1 refuses to update iPhone 3GS software ver. 4.1
Does anyone have a workaround for this problem, where iTunes tells me
there is a newer version of iPhone software, 4.2, and that I still have
only ver. 4.1. But when I click the Update key, the response is that
my iTunes 9.2.1 software is up-to-date, but it won't update the IPHONE software?
(In the iTunes SUMMARY tab for my iPhone 3GS, it says that my iPhone software is v. 4.1, and then next to the Update key it says that a newer version of iPhone software, 4.2, is available. Problem is, when I click on the Update key, the response is that my iTunes software (not iPhone software), is ver. 9.2.1 and is "up to date." No mention of how I can update my iPhone 4.1 to version 4.2. I see no work-around in the iPhone Help functions.)
BTW, re-clicking the Update key has the same result as Einstein predicted. Same result: no iPhone software update. This is the first time I have tried to update the iPhone software, since I only recently purchased the 3GS.
Any advice would be much appreciated!Requirements to install iOS 4.2.1, this is from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1061

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at this article:
iOS: Unable to update or restore
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1808
When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup.
Best of luck,

Problem updating Iphone 3gs to ios5
Hello.
I have a serious problem. Yesterday, Itunes requested to update my phone to IOS5 (My Iphone was working perfectly on the older version of IOS)
Updater got stuck on the recover part for an hour until I recieved an error. " Iphone could not be restored. Unknown error (14)."
On my phone's screen it wants me to plug it into itunes. Itunes says "ITunes has detected an Iphone in recovery mode.
IPhone software must be restored before it can be used with iTunes"
I try to restore it and same problem occurs. Any ideas? I've noticed some people are facing problems with ios5 update also.
Thanks already for help!See Here

Aaaargh - grief updating iPhone 3GS software
My iPhone 4 decided to go swimming in a toilet bowl, so I resorted to using my 3GS. I've put off updating the software for as long as possible, because I have nothing but horrible nightmares doing this.
True to form, I am in a horrible nightmare - having been forced into updating just now.
I kicked off the download; next thing, I get a message in iTunes stating that the restore process could not be completed. Restore? Who was restoring? Next to 'Check for Update' on the iPhone page in iTunes, is stated 'Your iPhone software is up to date'. However, my iPhone is showing the cable/iTunes HELP ME icon, and the only button available to me in iTunes is the 'Restore' one - which, upon presing, states that everything will be erased. Plus, iTunes keeps flashing up a message about detecting an iPhone in recovery mode, and nothing can be done until I complete the restore process.
Yep, I remember now why I put off updating for so long. I have a bunch of Notes on my phone that I cannot lose, aside from contacts and other gubbins. Now that the phone appears to be in 'stuffed' mode, has the data been lost already? And why is this such a pig of a process? Is my only option now to restore, and lose all my data? Really, the thought of losing all my notes causes me a great deal of pain...If you have a recent backup of your phone (meaning you sync regularly) after you restore the phone you can restore that backup.

Problems updating iPhone 3GS from 3.0.1
I have read numerous other posts on this topic, but they have not helped me. Whenever I connect my iPhone to my Mac, I am prompted to update the iPhone software, but this has failed repeatedly, with err=-3259. I have tried connecting the Mac to my wireless router with an ethernet cable, and have also tried turning off the firewall. I have no specific antivirus software installed to turn off. I have tried restoring my iPhone, but this also fails, as the iPhone software update is "timed out" with the same error message. Any ideas, anyone?
That's because Apple is no longer signing v3.1.3 nor any firmware other than iOS4. You could try following a downgrade to v3.1.3, see these:
http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?threadID=&q=Downgrade+iPhone&objID=c201 &dateRange=last30days&userID=&numResults=30&rankBy=10001
This guide works for 3G but not 3GS, though there are some suggestions for 3GS users in there:

I am having difficulty in updating my iphone 3GS software from version 4.1 to version 5.1. I tried using my phone but cannot find the update software button even when I have gone through the right process by tapping SETTING, then GENERAL, yet could not find Update Software button. I mean the update Software button is not seen there.
I tried using itunes, yet no way. Each time I connect my iphone to my laptop itunes software comes up automatically and alerts me that a newer version of software for my iphone is available, It usually gives me the option of Download & Install or Download Only. Whichever of the option I click a message will always appear telling me that the iphone update server could not be contacted, then asking me to make sure that my network settings are correct and active or try again latter. Sometimes, when click on the Update button on my itune software. It will display an error has occured.
I have even tried to Restore iphone from itunes, yet the problem keep repeating itself.
Can anyone help me?Dear Tim,
I saw your message. Below are the problems:
Whenever I connect my iphone 3GS to my PC through a USB. My itunes software comes up automatically.
1. After that a message appears from the itunes that states that 'itunes could not connect to the itunes store, an unknown error cccured (306).
2. After the above, an alert message comes up which states that A new iphone software version 5.1 is availlable for my iphone. It then states would you like to download it and update your iphone now? With the options buttons as Cancel or Download and Update or Download Only. Whenever I clicked on Download and Update or Download Only, the next message that comes up is that The iphone Software Update Server Could not be Contacted and suggest make sure your network setting are correct and active or try again later.
The above is the challenges I am facing now. -

I am trying to update my iphone 3GS software but itunes just says that this is the current version of itunes, it does not see the phone update - anyone know how to get the phone updated?
Mike
I have done that and it is through pressing that update, which tells me that there is anew version of iphone software, that the prompt comes telling me that this is the current itunes? -
Has anyone had trouble downloading the updated iPhone/iPad software? My computer gets to the end of the download, says there is a problem and won't update my iPhone or my iPad.
