ChrisJ4203, thanks very much for your input. I don't mean to turn this post into an endless debate, but frankly I am still having a hard time believing that the WiFi died as a result of a hardware failure.
My logic might be flawed, but here it is:
While the iPhone 4S got very hot when wirelessly downloading and installing iOS 7.0.4 over the WiFi network, the WiFi chip and antenna had to be functional to complete the wireless iOS update. Apple was very clear that iOS 7.0.4 is too large to download and install via cellular service. Accordingly it would appear that any hardware failure had to occur in the few minutes between the download/installation of iOS 7.0.4 and its first use. That window of opportunity is incredibly small in an otherwise flawless hardware performance. I am not a big believer in long shot coincidences, so a WiFi hardware malfunction seems highly improbable to me, but not impossible. A firmware/iOS conflict still seems more plausible to me.
I also don't read much into Apple's "out-of-warranty" replacement offer at $199. AT&T tells me that anyone walking in off the street (with or without a hardware or iOS malfunction) would receive the same offer.
I appreciate that some iPhone 4S users did not experience any WiFi issues when they updated to iOS 7.0.4, but such difference could easily be explained if Apple used more than one WiFi chip and/or firmware in the iPhone 4S series. Such an explanation would also account for iOS 7.0.4 (and 7.0.6) not recognizing the WiFi chip after the iOS update.
Still perplexed, but thanks again for your kind efforts to help.
Wonder if I can limp along long enough to spend my money on an Apple iPhone 6 ... but then again I don't want to be anyone's beta-tester.
I am tempted to switch to a Samsung Galaxy or some other smartphone as long as I will be buying new accessories, but frankly I don't want to waste my time learning a new OS or core apps.

ive tried charging mine too. the only recommendation i can give is to allow the phone to completely die, and not being able to access any apps or anything to kill the battery makes it a long, boring process that could take up to 2-3 days (depending on the battery life of YOUR phone). im in the same situation, but my phone did flicker to life for 20 minutes or so, but then went back to the screen being a jerk. the only reason im continuing to put my phone on the charger is to assure that it syncs with my icloud so i can just get this piece replaced simply and easily.

I have an original iPhone running version 2.2.1. I wish to get rid of the phone, but before discarding it I want to remove the email records, phone book information, and photos. I would like to leave the other apps in place. Any suggestions?
Delete you mail account on the phone and disable to sync your mail account in the info pane in iTunes with your phone connected, same for contacts. Also deselect photo syncing in the photo pane. After the following sync, your mail, contact and photos should be gone.
Photos inside the camera roll have to be deleted on the phone.
Remember, that apps only can be used with the account they were bought with. If the phone will be set up with a different iTunes account, all of your apps will be removed.

I did a complete settings rest on my iphone 4s and I've synced it to my computer 2 or 3 times now but no matter what I do it doesn't fully download any of my apps even after I unplug it. What should I do?

Hae you tried to do a hard reset of your phone? This will not lose any data. Hold the sleep/wake button and the home button until the phone turns off ignoring any slide to power off messages. Then power the phone back on.

Hi today i update to IOS 5 on my Verizon iPhone 4 and now my wifi doesnt work. When i go to configure my wifi place next to were it says wifi in the settings is greyed out and says "no wifi". i obviously cant tap it and configure it. I dont know what's going on! it was working on IOS 4.2.10 literally 2 minutes before updating and now it doesnt work! i have NOT dropped my iPhone or spilled anything on it. I'm having the same problem with my AT&T iPhone 4.
After installing ios5, WiFi was greyed out in settings. I turned my phone off and back on, and wifi was back. It saw my 2 routers, and allowed me to input my WEP passwords for them, but then, when I went to an app that used wifi, Safari, it wouldn't connect, and listed "Not Connected" Going back into WiFi prefs, it appeared to be searching for networks, but didn't find any. Not my 2, nor any of the neighbors. I usually see 3-4 networks other than my own.
Turn it off and on again, WiFi greyed out again.
Reset all settings - Wifi back, but with the same results as the first time.
Reset network settings - Wifi still greyed out.
I see this has happened at other new iOS releases, but never to me. Hopefully there will be a patch soon. I do have unlimited data, but dang 3G is slow.
I'm going to back up my phone this morning, and do a restore to factory settings, and see what that does, besides totally screw up all my apps. -
My iphone 4 has become extremely sensitive i cant talk on the phone without putting calls on hold, mute or hanging up!! when i'm in a call it's like the screen has become super sensitive to touch! I tried putting on a screen protecter but this didnt work please help?
While on a call, the iPhone display should go black when lifted to your ear. Is this not happening or only happening intermittently?
Have you tried making calls without your silicone case on? Does this make any difference?
You could try updating or restoring the software to try to rule that out as a cause. If the issue remains after restoring then the issue is probably hardware related and may need to be serviced. -

Sorry. There's nothing anyone can do. The current version of the facebook app will not run on 4.2.1. The iPhone 3G won't run anything higher than 4.2.1. You're stuck.
Maybe it's time to buy yourself a new iPod Touch. -

You can use iTunes to sync all the music off your phone by unchecking "Sync Music" on the Music tab of your iTunes sync settings, then clicking Apply at the bottom to sync your phone. After updating, sync your music back to your phone.

Usually a high amount of "Other" is a sign of corruption. I would recommend a restore in iTunes.
