What a screw up on Apple's part... I have iTunes 9.0.2 and you need at least 9.2 to install iOS4. iTunes 9.2 requires Leopard (I'm running Tiger). And of course iTunes 10 requires Leopard as well. So people with Tiger are SOL I guess. How stupid is that?

I have heard about this issue many times from those around me etc. the issue is not of your wi-fi connection or anything like that. think of how many people have iPhones who want to update. the servers are literally crammed! i would just wait a day or so, and the update should go smoothly. best of luck !

As long as you use the same iTunes account as you originally used to buy them, and they are still available in the store, then you should be able to re-download them for free. If it's the iPhone 3G with iOS 4.2 then I don't think that you get a Purchased tab in the App Store app on it (if it's a newer phone with a iOS 4.3.3+ then you should get the Purchased tab), so you will need to find each app in the store - or you can re-download them on your computer's iTunes via the Purchased link under Quick Links on the left-hand side of the iTunes store home page (re-downloading)
