TS1702 I lost all of my apps when i updated my iphone 4.  How can I get them back on my phone?

I updated my phone and lost all of my apps.  How can I get the apps on iTunes back on my phone?

I lost all of my apps icons today as well.  I have to go to the Apps Store and click on the the app.  Can't re-dowload and the app. store says that all of my apps. updates were applied.  Where is this Synch Apps and the Apps Tab?  On the phone or in iTunes.  I hope that this works for me, too.
PS - every update that I have done has required a restore, and I only have a couple dozen apps.  The Apple rep. I spoke with today said that I have to redownload the apps, but can't do that and even if I could I would loose my data.  Grrrrrrr.
