TS1717 ITUNES.EXE - Bad Image.  C:\Window\System32\Softpub.dll Problem

I have been having a problem getting into ITUNES.  my computer is giving me a Message when i launch Itunes and says
ITUNES.EXE - Bad Image
C:\Windows\System32\Softpub.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
I have tried downloading the Softpub.dll file and tried replacing it, but my computer says I am not the trusted manager (I am the Admin on this PC and dont know why I cant change it.  if anyone can help that would be great.  Thanks....

b noir - You are awesome!  I was having the "bad image" problem with the after downloading ITunes 10.  I also had a problem with a DEP error (as you know - data execution protection).  I tried so many things in combination to fix these problems, I am not sure which piece of your advice finally did the trick!  Regarding the bad image, I renamed the file as you recommended.  I tried downloading a new softpub.dll.  I didn't think I was successful, but there it was right where it was supposed to be.  I used the Windows Error Checking feature (right click on C Drive, properties, tools) to clean things up.  Lastly, a friend recommended using a different USB port to sync for the first time.  UREKA!  I can now sync.  Thanks for all of your suggestions, b noir!

Which particular file are the messages complaining about, rock? (Precise spelling, please.)

  • Itunes.exe bad image error

I have been trying to get iTunes up and running for months now with no luck what so ever. I'm running on Windows Vista Service Pack 2.
On opening iTunes I get the error message
    'iTunes.exe - Bad Image
C:\WINDOWS\system32\softpub.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support." '
After clicking Ok a window appears saying itunes has stopped working and that its trying to find a solution. only button is 'close program'. After closing the program a message appears in the bottom right of the screen saying DEP (Data Execution Protection) has closed itunes to protect my computer.
As well as this problem I have been unable to perform a windows update. It has been giving various error codes which I tried to fix using the windows Fixit programs and other fixes but both problems persisted.
I looked thorugh a lot of discussions on different forums online and have tried various things but to no avail. At first I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it (I have now done this around twenty times after trying different fixes) and it downloaded and installed perfectly every time but whenever I tried opeing it I would get the bad image error message.
I have also tried running system file checker (sfc scan) by running command prompt as administrator and it says
'Beggining system scan. This may take some time.
There is a system repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. restart windows and run sfc again.'
But when I restart windows and run sfc again it gives exaclty the same message. I repeated this on numerous occasions after trying other fixes but always gave the same message.
I also read that replacing the softpub.dll file in the system32 file could be a fix, so I downloaded a new file but when I tried to either rename the old one, move it or do a move and replce with the new file I was told that I couldn't because it needed the administrators permission. I am the only user and was logged in with administrators rights so don't know why it asked and when I tried to give permission it says
    ' Destination Folder Acces Denied
You need permission to perform this action.'
It gives the option to retry but this just produces the same message.
Any help would be massively appreciated.

Fix digital signing of Windows drivers
In some cases an issue with the digital signing of certain Windows XP drivers can prevent iTunes from launching. Use the following steps to correct such issues:
    1. Highlight all of the following 4 lines of text that begin with regsvr32 and then choose Copy from the Edit menu of your web browser:
    regsvr32 /s wintrust.dll
    regsvr32 /s softpub.dll
    regsvr32 /s mssip32.dll
    regsvr32 /s initpki.dll
    2. Open the Notepad program by navigating to:
Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad
    3. In Notepad, choose Paste from the Edit menu. Note: make sure that the text that appears in Notepad is the same as what is shown above.
    4. From the File menu, choose Save As.
    5. In the File name: field type iTunes.bat and save the file to the Desktop.
    6. Close Notepad and locate the iTunes.bat file. It should appear on the Desktop.
    7. Double-click the file and you will see a black window appear on the screen for about a minute. Wait until the window automatically disappears and proceed to the next step.
    8. The iTunes.bat file can be deleted at this time.
    9. Try opening iTunes again.

I did some research and I found out that C:\windows\system32\missip32.dll is a part of Windows Vista, not iTunes, but iTunes may use it when iTunes is starting. C:\windows\system32\missip32.dll is also a major target for viruses because attacking it may cripple the computer. Try scanning your computer with anti-virus software.

This is the message I get when trying to open iTunes. I've tried reinstalling iTunes several times and it has still never worked. Can someone please help me with this problem.

This is what Microsoft has to say about the problem:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798
It mentions dssenh.dll specifically in Method 4, but any of the other methods may work or be necessary.
    Hope this helps.

  • A60:itunes.exe - Bad Image

When double clicking on by desktop short cut to iTunes I get this message :
" The application or DLL c:\Program Files\Quick Time \QTsytem\QuickTime Authority.qtx is not a valid window image. PLease check this against your installation diskette. " Itunes then opens but I am unable to playback songs as the slider does not move when clicking the play button.

Yes Quick Time was opening, in the meantime I have un-installed quick time and down loaded the Standard Version of Quck Time. That seemed to have done the trick.

  • HPSF Msgr.exe - Bad Image

How do I fix the following:
    HPSF Msgr.exe - Bad Image
c:\ windows\system32\atiu9p64.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error.  Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
The message appears randomly, and when I click on ok or just try to exit out, it will not go away.  In order to get rid of the message I have to shut down the computer, which then tells me that the program is in use and it will need to force the closing of HPSF Msgr.exe to shut down.  I force the shut down, and when I reopen the computer, the message is gone.  The message may not reappear for a few sessions on the computer, but eventually, the message returns.  I've run tune-ups and security checks and everything checks out with the results that everything is running properly and there are no viruses.
How do I fix this problem?

    Hi,
There are few options from the following link, you can (a) disable it, (b) clean it up or (c) re-install it:

Please pick the one you prefer.

  • Windows\system32\QUARTZ.dll can't open in Windows.  Can't use Premiere Elements.

I am looking for a way to get a solution to this error which keeps preventing me from opening my Premiere Elements 11 program.  I have previously used the program without any problems.  But last week I had a new HDD installed in my laptop (Dell Studio XPS 1640 running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit).  Now I can't open Premiere Elements and can't edit my videos.
When I try to open the program, I get an error which reads:
Font Capture: Adobe Premiere Elements.exe - Bad Image
C:\Windows\system32\QUARTZ.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.  Try installing the program again using the original instalation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support
My computer technician did use an image of my laptop to transfer everything onto the new HDD.  I have no idea if that is relevant to this software problem.
I posted this question previously and was directed to a link which instructed me to update my DirectX and other graphics drivers.  I did all that already.  I still can't open Premiere Elements.  I want to ask Adobe Support, but since they just launched Premiere Elements 12, I guess I no longer get direct support from Adobe? Not sure but that is how it seems to work.  I will try any advice given to resolve this issue, if anyone has ideas.
    Thanks!
    Janeen

Did you try reinstalling as indicated by the error message?  Transferring images is not a good way to install Adobe programs.

  • C/windows/system32/wmp.dll

    Hello support team,
my window 7 media will not open- I tried turning feature on & off many times, I tried SFC scan, can fix the problem.
It keep saying " Wmplayer.exe bad image' 'c/windows/system32/wmp.dll ' has error ' window media player is not installed property and must be reinstall"
But I can anything on Microsoft download site that I can download. Any suggestions ?
Thank you so much for youer assistance
    SAM

    Hi,
First, I suggest you run a security program to scan your system to see if there is any virus may cause your issue.
Then, we can try to copy the wmp.dll from a good Windows 7 computer or installation media and manually replace to check the results: You'd better log into Safe mode to perform following steps.
1.Take administrative ownership of the corrupted system file. To do this, at an elevated command prompt, copy and then paste (or type) the following command, and then press ENTER:
    takeown /f "C:\Windows\System32\wmp.dll"
2.Grant administrators full access to the corrupted system file. To do this, copy and paste (or type) the following command, and then press ENTER:
    icacls "C:\Windows\System32\wmp.dll" /GRANT ADMINISTRATORS:F
3.Replace the corrupted system file with a known good copy of the file. To do this, copy and paste (or type) the following command, and then press ENTER:
    Copy Source_File "C:\Windows\System32\"
Note The Source_File placeholder represents the path and file name of the known good copy of the file on your computer
If we still fail to fix this issue, I recommend your manually install WMP from a installation media:
I recommend you use following commands running as admin to reinstall Media player from a installation media:
    Uninstall features:
    Dism /online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:WindowsMediaPlayer
Mount a wim file from installation media:
    Dism /Mount-Image /ImageFile:C:\test\images\install.wim /index:1 /MountDir:C:\test\mount\windows
Install Windows Media player from mounted install.wim
    Dism /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:WindowsMediaPlayer /Source:C:\test\mount\windows /LimitAccess
Note: C:\test\mount\windows is the location you mount the install.wim from installation media

  • AcroRd32.exe - Bad Image error message

Suddenly I am getting this error message:  C:\\Windows\system32\ATMLB./dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software  vendor for support.
I am Windows 7 64 bit.  Acrobat XI Pro from the Cloud.  It has been working fine.  I can open some, but it crashes others.  It seems to crash on some fillable forms that I've made.
I uninstalled Adobe Reader XI, but hasn't made a difference.
I am not a techie so a simple solution, is better.
    Should I uninstall and reinstall?
    Thanks for your help.

I was able to fix this, and I posted about it on another forum post here.
I had this issue ("Bad Image: C:\Windows\system32\ATMLIB.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error") with Adobe Reader X (10.1.12). I tried repairing, and then tried uninstalling and upgrading to Adobe Reader XI (11.0.9), but still had the same trouble. I compared the atmlib.dll files in both directories and noticed that the file in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 did not appear to have any file meta data (giving the appearance that it was corrupted), whereas the file in C:\Windows\system32 reflected a file version 5.1.2.238 and product version "5.1 Build 238". Now, it appears based on being installed to "C:\Program Files (x86)" that the version of Adobe Reader I was using was 32-bit. So, this tells me that while the error references the C:\Windows\system32 file path, it is likely actually the file in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 that is the problem (Windows-on-Windows emulation for 32-bit applications, 32-bit libraries actually reside in C:\Windows\SysWOW64, not C:\Windows\system32). I found the same file in C:\Windows\SysWOW64 with the same product and file version on another 64-bit Windows 7 workstation, and simply copied it to C:\Windows\SysWOW64 on the affected workstation, and that resolved the issue.
NOTE: To overwrite the file, I had to change file ownership to Administrators security group, otherwise it was immutable.
