"The folder iTunes is on a locked disk/you do not have write permissions"
I'm running iTunes 10 on my MacBook Pro. I have an older MacBook which I updated a couple of days ago and as part of Software Update iTunes 10 was loaded and then the library was refreshed.
I suspect that it's having done that that's then caused a problem on my MacBook Pro (the machine I use every day). *I can no longer open iTunes, instead I get the message I've reprised above.*
Clearly I've messed something up but I'm not sure when or how. *Can anyone offer any clues or workaround, please, that I could follow to be able to access iTunes on my MacBook Pro again?*
I've made a Genius appointment for Monday but I'm rather hoping that the Apple Discussions community will come to the rescue and save me bothering my local Apple Store's staff with what seems to be a problem of my own making!check if you have read & write permissions for your music folder. in finder, right-click on it and +get info+. unlock the little padlock (you may have to enter your admin password) and change the permission settings. next, click on the little gear-shaped icon and +apply to enclosed items+ like so
you may also give everyone read & write access.
the important part is to *apply to enclosed items* !

My iTunes won't open! It keeps saying 'The iTunes Library.itl is locked on a locked disk or you not have write permission for this file.' Please Help!
this may happen on external drives if:
The external drive was hotpluged (removed) without going the correct "eject" way
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
First Aid for external drive
Close iTunes
Unmount (eject) external drive the right way.
Mount drive again
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up" This will force the filesystem to rescan the file structure of the drive and rebuilding the file system table and journaling file.
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive) restart iTunes
If your iTunes library is on your internal drive, this may happen
The system was not shoot down correct, e.g. "pulled the plug"
The iTunes library (database) got corrupted
First Aid for internal hard drive
Close iTunes
Reboot system
Go to Workplace -> right click external drive -> choose "clean up"
After the tool shows "done" (could last some time depending on size of drive)
Reboot system, restart iTunes
If none of the above fixes your problem, post here.

I am trying to open iTunes on my mac. But a box pops up saying "The folder iTunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder". Anyone know what that means? I've had my computer 2 years and its never had a problem opening it
I've already right-clicked on the application, clicked "get info", and changed it so all people listed in the "Sharing & Permissions" section have the "read & write" privilage.
The error message is referring to your iTunes library, not your iTunes application.
You need to check and fix the permissions of the iTunes folder in your iTunes library. This is by default located in your "Music" folder.
Select the folder Music > iTunes in the Finder, right click on it or Ctrl Click and click "Get Info". At the bottom of the contextual window thatwill pop up, disclose the Sharing and Permissions brick, change your status from Read only to Read & Write. You may need to click the padlock icon to make changes. -

Wanted to sync up my new IPhone4, and thought that I should make sure I had the most up to date version of ITunes on my desktop first. Tried to get on site, and got an error message saying; "The folder ITunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder." Cannot get on ITunes at all now. Help! Thx.
In my case its a new computer the old one was stolen and the time machine disk did not work for a restore but did for copying the info to the new mac

Have tried to install Itunes on laptop running 32 bit Windows 7 - it says it installed successfully but then when I click to open I get the message "the folder is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder."
You will have to descripe where the drive is and much more.
Then go and look at the drive and folder and who has group ownership policy and more.
It would have to be a guess, plus "20 questions" but why post here? when there are Snow Leopard, iMac, and of course, iTunes, Community forums.

But this is not iTunes, it is a workstation community -
I'm getting a msg saying the folder "itunes" is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder? What's going on? Won't sync when i plug in ipod shuffle or touch.
Post this in the iTunes forum as it does not pertain to an iPod Shuffle.

I have unintalled and reinstalled several times, just suddenly stopped working. I have windows 7, have for awhile. I get the following message: The Folder I tunes is on a locked disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder"
I had an existing account that i am no longer able to access.
I got one email suggesting right click and run as program administrator, tried it and did not work. Also went into permissions folder and ensured was listed as program administrator.
Help and Thanks in advance.Hi Chris,
I apologize, I'm a bit unclear on the exact nature of your issue. When you say a "different server", if you mean that you recently changed the location where iTunes was storing its files (local or otherwise), you may find the following article helpful:
