What is the exact error message?
should i try erase and install?
You will loose all you data and apps?  Is that a problem?
could that cause more problems?
Not unless you panic over loosing your data.
the computer will not start up alone.
What does it do when you try?  What is on the screen when it stops?
The most likely thing in my mind is a problem with the hd. I suggest your run disk utility. if you do not need your data reformatting is best in this case.
I suspect disk corruptions.

  • Bootcamp - Startup disc error

    Hello,
I have a Macbook Pro mid 2010, Mac OS X 10.7.4 (11E53) Kernel Version:  Darwin 11.4.0 and I have also Windows 7 Ultimate using VMware. But something changed apparently, because previosuly it booted straight to Windows, but now it boots straight to Mac. If I need to boot into Windows I restart the laptop using Alt. Plus, on the Startup disc option, the Windows partition is nowhere to be found, but the bootcamp hd is still intact. What should I do?
    Thank you

    Hello Iris_Vader,
It may help to boot to OS X Recovery, then run Repair Disk on your Hard Drive via Disk Utility.
If you've installed an operating system on a drive but it isn't listed, the volume you're trying to start from might need repair. If the volume contains OS X, start your computer from OS X Recovery and useDisk Utility to repair the volume, or reinstall OS X on the volume using the Recovery System.

  • Defragmentatio/ Startup disc error

hello everyone, I have recently converted to the Mac, which makes me very happy, but have some unanswered issues. One is the Onyx cleaning utility is giving me a message saying that the startup disc doesnt appear to be ok. I went through all the steps to try and fix it including the the installed disc utility, trying to boot from the installation disc etc. The install disc takes me right to where it wants to install a new operating system. It gives me no option to enter the utilities folder and then the disc utility, so forth as instructed in the manual. Am I doing something terribly wrong? And the other question is a defragmentation utility, I read something about a Micromats tech tool pro. I read about it in the macbook for dummies book as well, and it sounds as if it is included in the machine, but I cannot locate it anywhere, help please . Thank You everyone for your help, all the best.

To run Disk Utility from the Mac OS X Installation Disk, start up from the disk. At the first Installer screen, go up to the Installer menu (at the top) and select the command to run Disk Utility. That's where it is, not on one of the screens.
TechTool Pro is a separate product. Here is the web site.
    http://www.micromat.com/
I have a copy myself and think it (and DiskWarrior) are great tools to have around. TechTool Pro has a defragmentor. However, Mac OS X does some defragmenting of files in the background. It does not defragment free space. So as long as you have plenty of free space on your drive, it is probably not necessary to run the defragmentor. Mac OS X uses free space for its virtual memory swap file, so if your Mac seems to be bogging down, and your free space is getting on the low side, defragging may help. It won't give you more free space, but it will make your free space contiguous. You should back up your critical data (and delete unneeded files) before running the defrag tool.

  • Had to uninstall Firefox, now I can't reinstall. Get error message "Can not find archive file." Please help!

I believe I had some kind of virus attack. I got everything cleaned up. (I HOPE) In the process of cleaning the virus, I unintalled Firefox because it wouldn't open. Kept getting the error message that Firefox was already open and I had to close out of the sessions or restart the computer. After restarting the computer several times and not being able to find any open sessions in task manager, I uninstalled. When trying to reinstall, I get the error message "can not find archive file." I've tried downloading Firefox from cnet as well as the Mozilla site to no avail. Please help. I'm getting tired of using Chrome already!

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • Macbook Pro Startup Disc Error Message

I keep getting the "Your Mac OS X startup disk has no more space available for applications memory" error statement, but, even after deleting around 60% of my files, it still keeps giving me that, and some of my applications won't open. I don't really know much about computers, but I've done everything I can think of + some online suggestions, but nothing has worked so far. What should I do?
In case it helps, it is a 13 inch screen, and I bought it in early 2010.

It says I have 0 KB for Audio, Movies, Photos, Apps, and Backups (which is definitely not true for any of these), and Other has 249.11 GB.
I have tried scanning for viruses, restarting my computer, and a few other vague things that didn't really seem to apply to my situation but were the best I could find. I also tried updating my computer but it said there wasn't enough space. And sometimes something about virtual memory comes up, but I assume it's just part of the same issue? And what is this "Other" stuff?

  • Emac can't get startup disc out because there is no operating system onboard.

    Emac 800Mhz 2000 model.
I erased the hard drive of the system using disk utitlity.  This took nearly a week.  Then I stupidly tried to install the operating system again using an upgrade disc.  It is refusing to install, obviously, but also I can''t get the blasted disc out now.  Tried holding eject key on restart, holding option key -> gives the choose startup disk screen but didn't help.  The only way I can think of is to link the computer to another Mac and try to use the other Mac's OS to boot and then eject, but don't know if this will work and it seems like a lot of hassle.  I have lost the original Emac install discs.
    Any ideas on the subject?
    Thanks

  • Not enough memory, can't install startup disc

    Hi
Thanks to iVMichael for getting me this far, I can't get to reply to his posts for some reason but I am using a really old computer.
I'm trying to install Mac OS X but I don't have enough memory on my mac book pro, how can I get access to my documents to move them whilst I'm in the Mac OS X Installer page.
    Thanks

If you are in the middle of the installer- no way.  You can try backing out.

  • My MacBook Pro has 10.5.8 but came with 10.5.7 install disc and won't boot up and can't reinstall

My MacBook Pro has 10.5.8 but came with 10.5.7 install disc and won't boot up and can't reinstall.
the disc is spinning and I see the apple on the screen with the spinning gear and after a while it just turns off OR the few times it does get past that point when I go into disc utility it tells me that it can not install on this machine!
It's driving me crazy, please help!!!

    Welcome to the Apple community.
I'm not entirely sure I follow you here, home sharing comes with iTunes 10.2, so far as I am aware even iTunes 10.6.1 only requires OS X 10.5.8 or better. On that basis I'm not sure why you think you have a problem.

  • My iMac goes to disc utilities on startup, repair disk doesn't cure it and I can't reinstall Mountain Lion because I don't remember my I'd and password at the time I bought the software. Currently working abroad and at a loss can anyone help please?

My iMac goes to disc utilities on startup, repair disk doesn't cure it and I can't reinstall Mountain Lion because I don't remember my ID and password at the time I bought the software the system isn't accepting my current details and Apple isn't recognising the answers to my security questions.  They don't even seem to have my correc date of birth so I can't progress the reinstallation.  I'm currently abroad and have my iMac with me but with no way of contacting Apple that I can find, I'm at a loss and very reluctant to pay £35 to try and get my ID and pasword sorted out given that their system recognises my current details.  can anyone help please?
    AG

when they gifted me the mountain Lion software several years ago.
Mountain Lion was introduced in July 2012. Did the people who gifted you possibly use their Apple ID for the purchase of your OS? If you used your own Apple ID, you should have simply used the one you use for all things app store. The problem with any purchase at the app store is: whatever Apple ID was used to purchase, it willl stay tied to that Apple ID forever. And, purchases from the app store are not transferable.
So, you can check with the person(s) who gifted you or spend $20 to buy it - or, if your hardware is compatible with the new OS Mavericks, you could download it and associate it with your Apple ID.
FWIW, according to the licensing agreement, the OS remains the property of Apple and you are only granted a license to run it.

  • Ok so my MacBook Pro has begun saying the startup disc is full after importing photos, so I deleted done and the message went away. now my computer won't go passed the login page it gets stuck after I login and goes to a grey screen. Can anyone help?

    Startup disc full

    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.

after upgrading to mountain lion i keep getting an error message saying my startup disc is full. it shouldnt be full because there is barely anything on there and i was running windows with bootcamp prior to this with no issues. my computer now freezes and programs close randomly. The usual command for opening windows with bootcamp doesnt work. once in restarted my computer after it froze and it rebooted in windows automatically. i really just want to know if there is a way to take the upgrade off my laptop because it is very annoying.

    Hi Memalyn
Essentially, the bare issue is that you have a 500GB hard drive with only 10GB free. That is not sufficient to run the system properly. The two options you have are to move/remove files to another location, or to install a larger hard drive (eg 2TB). Drive space has nothing to do with SMC firmware, and usually large media files are to blame.
My first recommendation is this: download and run the free OmniDiskSweeper. This will identify the exact size of all your folders - you can drill down into the subfolders and figure out where your largest culprits are. For example, you might find that your Pictures folder contains both an iPhoto Library and copies that you've brought in from a camera but are outside the iPhoto Library structure. Or perhaps you have a lot of purchased video content in iTunes.
If you find files that you KNOW you do not need, you can delete them. Don't delete them just because you have a backup, since if the backup fails, you will lose all your copies.
Don't worry about "cleaners" for now - they don't save much space and can actually cause problems. Deal with the large file situation first and see how you get on.
Let us know what you find out, and if you manage to get your space back.
    Matt

  • No Startup Disc - Blue Screen Error

I recently upgraded my G4 with the leopard operating system. It was running fine for a while and then entered the blue screen problem. I ran into this same problem with my G5 and took the proper steps to try and fix it but have had no luck. I tried to connect to another mac through the firewire option, and it turns off before connecting. When I try to boot in safe mode, nothing. I can boot from the leopard install disc, but when I go to try to run disk utility to repair permissions, the only drive that shows up is the cd. It will not recognize the startup disc in either disk utility or when I try to reinstall the software. I've also tried connecting an external hard drive to see if I could use that as a boot drive, but no luck in it coming up either. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! Have you followed THIS advice? If the drive is having problems it could take a long time to run the check routine. Tom

  • Can t back up library to disc. error 2131 . whats wrong ?

Hi , Can anyone help me back up library to disc. error 2131 keeps appearing.

Update: Success! I used my iPod as an external hard drive following these instructions:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329?viewlocale=en_US
After I reformatted I reinstalled my old iTunes 6 and dragged the folder back to My Music. At first, iTunes wuldn't sync a couple hundred songs to my iPod because I wasn't "authorized" so I had to enter my Apple ID and password. Downloaded latest software for Itunes and iPod and all is good.
Investing in an external hard drive still sounds like a good idea, since this was my first reformat and it was a bit nerve-wracking.

  • I interrupted a software update and my macbook pro will not boot. I have tried to reboot using the startup disc, I have tried to verify the disc, and repair the disc. It tells me I need to erase and reformat the hard drive then reinstall the operating sys

I interrupted a software update and my macbook pro will not boot. I have tried to reboot using the startup disc, I have tried to verify the disc, and repair the disc. It tells me I need to erase and reformat the hard drive then reinstall the operating system. I do not have a back up of all my applications, my garageband music and other things. I also do not have time capsule set up on this machine, but I do have a 2 TB time capsule.
Is there anyway to back up this corrupted drive so I can restore my applications later?

There's an old saying.  If you don't have a backup disc, then there must be nothing important to backup.  That's just lesson #1.  Lesson #2 is to never interrupt a software update.  Not a good thing.
OK, I'm sure you know this.  It just upsets me to read your story, knowing you have a lot of important stuff on your hard drive, and didn't use time machine.
You're pretty much in a bad place.  My only hope for you is to boot to your Installation Disc, then using disk utility see if you can save the internal hard drive (by fixing what can be fixed).  You might be able to see your user folder and some of your apps.  I wouldn't even consider copying the library, because who knows what's been corrupted in there.
    Good luck.

  • Configuration error 5 - I can't reinstall

I've recently bought a new mac mini, and I used migration assistant to copy everything from my old mac mini via time machine.
I had to put in the serial number again for Photoshop but that has worked fine since.
I'm having trouble though with InDesign as it won't go past the error message "configuration error"
I can't reinstall from the disc as there is no disc drive in the new mac mini and it wouldn't accept a third party CD drive.
Is there anything I can do?
