TS2167 iWeb: publish by ftp to GoDaddy webhosting service - get "publish error" at end of ftp session - always 1-2 files not successfully transferred - Why?

Why do I get message "Publish error There was an error communicating with the server.  Try again later, or check with your service provider" when i publish websites to webhosting service (GoDaddy.com) from iWeb 3.0.4  even though most webpages have been transferred and are marked blue?   There are always a few pages marked red after each ftp transfer?   It seems that the ftp session is terminated by web hosting service too fast for iWeb 3.0.4. to register that files have been transferred successfully.  When I check pages marked red in iWeb with browser, they are often available and functioning.     I have to add many extra webpages (which I do not want) to get iWeb to register all my pages as transferred (marked blue).  If I do not do this, all pages on website are marked "red" after I close iWeb and restart it.   This means that everytime i make one little change to one page on a website of 8-10 Gigabytes,  I often have to republish the entire site!
I think (without understanding enough/anything about ftp protocolls and termination negotiations) that iWeb is not getting enough time at end of each ftp session to register that all the pages have in fact been transferred successfully.   Could this be the explanation?  If so, how do I "slow down" the termination of ftp session by my web hosting service GoDaddy so that iWeb 3.0.4 can see that all files have been successfully transferred and therefore should be marked blue?

You're rather prone to problems, aren't you. It's not the first time.

And since you do not use iWeb's ftp, but publish to a folder, iWeb's job is done.
You are now 100 percent responsible for your actions.
Upload the files properly. And if you're not blind visually challenged, you can see for yourself where the files are on the server. No need for GoDaddy eyes.
And why not use iWeb's FTP. Then at least you eliminate the human error.
And no, GoDaddy won't have to help you with iWeb, because there's nothing to fix.
And practice FTP first on your computer :

Good luck.

Try this community: MobileMe on my Mac: MobileMe: Apple Support Communities.
And you can continue to use iWeb for some time to come. The following will explain:
It's now confirmed that iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. HOWEVER, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
In addition the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on.
HOWEVER, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still currently available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those copies still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD.

  • I'm getting "Publish Error - An unknown error occurred" in iWeb

....and it's killing me! My podcast has been MIA for over a week now. The link to my webpage is gone. I can't find any help here. When I try to publish my episodes, this is what I get: Publish Error - An unknown error occurred...
I can't seem to find any advice anywhere on what to do about it. I've searched forums and tried reloading, refreshing, etc. Please help.
    Thanks!
    Bill

Well, actually it is solved... I guess. My son wrote a page on a blog model, without no blog on it; I first removed all buttons that could call an RSS feed or podcasts from all the pages, the issue remained.
The page in question displayed another error message in Safari, telling something was missing, and it was impossible to navigate the site via the menu banner; so I Cmnd-A the page, copied the whole stuff onto a brand new blank page, no success neither.
Eventually, I rewrote the page from scratch, and it solved the issue. Perhaps somewhere on the former page a hidden button or a piece of code which put the mess... I dunnow. But it seems to be OK now.

  • Receive file by FTP (Server is restricted to get command only)

    Dear all,
I would like to receive a file from a very special FTP server. And I am not sure if the File Adapter is able to handle this:
The FTP server I wand to connect to is a very special one. This server allows only to log in and to receive a specific file. This means that the only allowed command is
    get file.dat
It is not possible to change directory or to get the directory listing. When the file was received it is not necessary (and not possible) to delete the catched file. The FTP server notices that the file was received and removes its content. This means that the file will not be removed. So it is always possible to get the file. But in most cases the file is empty (but that should not be a problem - the File Adapter can handle or ignore empty files.).
From my point of view it seems that SAP XI 3.0 SPS17 does not support to interact with this special kind of FTP Server. In RWB I can see the following error message:
"An error occurred while connecting to the FTP server 'XXX.XXX.XX.X:21'. The FTP server returned the following error message: 'com.sap.aii.adapter.file.ftp.FTPEx: 500 -3002 : command : invalid command'. For details, contact your FTP server vendor."
I connected to this FTP server manually. I get this error message when I try a command which is not allowd by the FTP server ("ls" for example). So I guess that SAP XI uses "ls" before catching the file.
Do you have an idea how I can configure the File Adpater to work with this FTP Server properly?
    Many thanks
    Michael

    Hi Michael,
This is a tricky one. The set of required ftp commands that need to be supported to be RFC compliant is quite small (see RFC 959) but it seems that the file adapter assumes a certain minimum set (including CWD and LIST, both of which are optional).
There are several options, varying in complexity immensely:
    1) Scripting the transfer process so that files are transferred to a local filesystem, from where they can be processed by XI
    2) Adjusting the "special ftp server" so that it ignores commands it doesn't understand - I'm guessing this isn't possible?
    3) Creating a "more relaxed" ftp JCA adapter, one that doesn't assume a certain minimum set of commands
    4) Something else I'm not thinking of so early in the morning
    Hope that helps a little...
    Regards, MJ

  • I am an artist who built my site on iWeb 08. Although I have easily been able to transfer to Godaddy, my ability to publish is limited. I must upload my entire site and it is time consuming. How do I convert to iWeb 09 and is this easy to do?

Help! I am an artist who had my site professionally designed on iWeb 08. Although I have  been able to transfer to Godaddy, my ability to publish is limited. I must upload my entire site and it is time consuming.  I was advised to update to IWeb 09 (which I could get, I think? from Amazon) because it has a built- in option to publish to any FTP. How do I convert my 08 folder to an 09 folder?  Will it convert correctly?  I know eventually I will need to rebuilt the site, but I would like to use this option for awhile to buy time. Is this feasible? I currently own a Mac Pro.

Its just a question of installing the later version of iWeb from the iLife disk and opening your website in that version. Its a good idea to have a backup of your Domain.sites2 file before doing this. See this page for its location...

  • Iweb hates me! Can't publish at all to Godaddy

I have a username, password, domain name, and hosting account through godaddy. All I want is to publish my iWeb site to my registered domain name. All I get are error messages that a connection could not be determined to my domain. I have changed my username, password and still nothing. I have typed in my server address and it didnt work, I tried my domain name and it didn't work.

Make sure you set up a Name & Password inside your go daddy account for your FTP this is different than the sign in name and password you use to enter into go daddys web site.
set up FTP login & password inside your go daddy account see domain manager in go daddy and let it activate may take up to 24 hours,
then use your NEW FTP login password that you will have created, to connect.
*I have my iweb *SITE PUBLISH SETTINGS* like this
    *PUBLISH to*: FTP SERVER
*Server address*: "I have NO FTP or http or www before name."
    just the name mywebsite.com
*Site name:* the site name auto fills..
*User name:* my go daddy *FTP user name* sign in........... NOT my go daddy site login number or name(see above)
Password: my go daddy *FTP sign in* password ....... Not my go daddy site login password (see above)
    Directory: path NOTHING leave empty.
    Protocol: FTP .......... PORT 21
*In URL* start with http://www. and then your name....so it should read
    http://www.mysite.com
this is how I have mine set and it publishes fine to go daddy but it did used to get the message you got and next time I tried it worked, try update your software click apple sign on computer and download the new updates if any.

  • IWeb Widgets gone from Published Site Hosted by GoDaddy

I have been using third-party widgets to create components for my iWeb (3.0.4 version) website. They are Beyond iWeb Pro-Pack items. (I copy to iWeb html snippet code windows the code from the Beyond iWeb Pro-Pack widget and hit "apply" and they work in TEST mode). I tested everything on my site to a local file prior to publishing the site to the internet. Upon publishing to the internet, none of these Pro-Pack widgets are visible on my site. They all functioned fine when they were in Local file "TEST" mode. They don't even appear as blank boxes or question marks (which has happened when I have incorrect paths). I wonder if it is the pathways to GoDaddy? I have spoken to GoDaddy techs about my dilemma and they only say the path to my webroot is:
    /public_html
This I don’t understand. Don’t I need http://www. ….. and other file references to get to the specific file in my webroot at GoDaddy?
Beyond iWeb Pro-Pack widgets I am using:
Apple Style Video Gallery (Youtube or Vimeo)
    Simple Hover Effect
    Panoramic Slideshow (Smooth Div Scroll)
    Photo Slideshow
When I created the Pro-Pack widgets for iWeb I used file links (through GoDaddy hosting) like http://www.wildmonkeysproductioons.com/images/WMP_VIDEO_PHOTOS/....specific photo.jpg
or---inside the cover path [in Apple Style Video Gallery (Youtube or Vimeo)] or a Youtube link in the video path (example): http://www.youtube.com/embed/LWWLM8QhVaw?rel=0
I also have non-Beyond iWeb Pro-Pack generated widgets like Youtube video widgets that are also missing from the website. I believe the problem is not with my Pro-Pack widgets but with my pathways to GoDaddy.
Does anyone have any suggestions or helpful ideas?
I do not understand website building very well and website code, for sure, I do not know.
    Dan

I took your advice and changed some file and folder names. I then updated my widgets to create continuity of connection with their files and photos in GoDaddy's File Manager. Now the BeyondiWeb widgets [Panoramic Slideshow (Smooth Div Scroll)] no longer recognize the path to them. No matter what I use as a path the link is broken.
GoDaddy says the following is the absolute path: /home/username/public_html/
    My user name: wildmonkeys
    Examples of paths are below:
    http://www.wildmonkeysproductions.com/public_html/WMP_Website_Banner_Photos/2013 _MCA_Symposium_GRAND_CANYON_Presentation-26_Dan_small.jpg
    /home/wildmonkeys/public_html/WMP_Website_Banner_Photos/2013_MCA_Symposium_GRAND _CANYON_Presentation-26_Dan_small.jpg
    /public_html/WMP_Website_Banner_Photos/2013_MCA_Symposium_GRAND_CANYON_Presentat ion-26_Dan_small.jpg
An example of a previously successful linked path (prior to file and folder name changes):

  • FTP publishing on iWeb to replace existing site - files not appearing.

On iWeb, I used FTP publishing to replace my existing site files, then deleted the original files but not only has the new site files not appeared in my public html folder but I get the message:The requested URL /www.geofflevitus.com was not found on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Founderror was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

but I get the message:The requested URL /www.geofflevitus.com was not found on this server.
That's an indication that the index.html file that is created alongside the site folder by iWeb is missing.
Try publishing your site to a folder on your hard driive and use a 3rd part ftp client like the free  Cyberduck to upload the site folder and the index.html file.
Cyberduck or Transmit will let you view your server folder in a Finder like window where you can see which files are missing.

I changed my header in iweb and when I published the site the font had shrunk and it displayed incorrectly. It was only on my home page, not on others. I have iweb 3.0.4. Help!?!?

Just in-case anyone els runs into this, I figured it out... I was working from my hotel and apperantly the fire wall was not allowing anything to uplaod, but I wasn't getting an error message from iweb, it would say that everything was published succesfully even though it wasn't. Once I went home and used my connection eveything worked fine.

  • TS2167 iWeb blog publishing help?

I am having trouble publishing an iWeb blog page.  I keep getting "Publish Error" unkown msg.  I have an iWeb website already and wanted to add a blog.  Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks

ok I know I am going to come across really dumb here but....
Ok, thanks for the help.  However, the file you indicate is missing - what is this where should it go and what do I do with it.
I have no idea why the domain name is also my site name these were the details given by my host people, although they did say they would sort it out to look better in the browser etc.
Not sure what you mean about making something an image if it's a text?  I have chosen the text 'cracked' so assuming everywhere I have used this (alot) I should split the words individually?
I have gone through all the links at the bottom of my page and they all go to where I want them to go within the website design on iweb, I've tested all ?
Sorry if I am being a little dumb here but the program was easy to use without further IT knowledge, i really appreciate your feedback as I am very keen to get my site live asap but please could you expand on your feedback so I can put these wrongs right.
    many thanks

  • How do I remove my iWeb pages from the Home folder so I can publish to a new host?

I have moved my MobileMe site to a new service (GoDaddy).  The basic transfer went very smoothly.  With one tiny hitch:  the new URL text.
IWeb places web  pages in folders, each folder being a  "site." The name of the root folder automatically becomes a "pointer" to the web site -- and part of the URL text.
My current root folder  is named DavidChartrand -- me.  So..... when I published everything over to GoDaddy the text "DavidChartrand" was attached to my URL.
Instead of seeing www.davidchartrand.com in the URL bar, visitors  see:   www.davidchartrand.com.com/DavidChartrand
GoDaddy staff says this is simply a quirk in iWeb's design.  Fine, but it's annoying.  Is there anyway I can keep using iWeb but somehow remove the root folder.....that is, remove my site pages from the root folder and and then re-publish? GoDaddy tech support swears it  has many former MobileMe/iWeb users who have done this successfully but offered had no idea how.
    David

The way iWeb publishes its websites, in its own folder, the normal URL is http://www.domain_name.com/Site_name/Page_name.html.  This is a normal URL for any web host.
If you want to get rid of the site name you will need to publish your website to a folder on your hard drive and upload only the contents of the website folder to your server with a 3rd party FTP client like YummyLite, Transmit or Cyberduck.  That will get rid of the site name in the URL.
Of course remove the existing website foldr from the server beforehand.
I believe the folder you publish to on GoDaddy is named public_html.  You might try renaming your website to "public_html" and publish to GoDaddy.  In theory iWeb will see the website's folder already on the server and publish the website file into it.
It works that way with HostExcellence.com which names the home folder the same as the domain name associated with it. This tutorial explains more about it: iW16 - Using HostExcellence.com with iWeb

  • Can't FTP upload (GoDaddy)

Hi...on last Sunday March 20 I called our host, GoDaddy, & changed our website's name. Since that date I can't upload any changes, as I've always done with no problem straight from iWeb.
I can see all changes on my sites's local desktop folder. I can also "see" our new site's name in GoDaddy's remote FTP client file, but when I click on that it says "can't access file."
I've called GoDaddy 5 times, get "I don't know iWeb" responses mostly, no help.
So since last Sunday I can't upload any new changes, edits, links, pictures...nothing.
    Help??

What I meant was, I changed our domain name on GoDaddy. And yes, my domain is hosted by GoDaddy. There were so many problems that today I asked them to change the domain name back to what it was.
I think I've totally screwed up. Still having issues. I've re-set iWeb's FTP settings & the old domain is back up.
Now I save & click publish, which seems to go okay...but then the window never comes down to say publishing is completed.

  • How do I stop iWeb from scrambling my site when I go to publish?

Everything looks perfectly fine on my site when I am editing it,
but when I go to publish, everything- links, normal text, media, images- becomes extremely scrambled. I have tried emptying the cache and rebooting my computer, as well as opening the domain in a new browser, but so far nothing has worked. Ideas?
(I've attached screen shots of what it looks like on iWeb and what it looks like post-publishing.)

When you have problems like this, publish your site to a local folder and launch this version in the browser to see if the cause is iWeb, FTP or on the server so that you know what to troubleshoot.
One thing that can cause problems is the use of special characters in page and file names that form part of URLs. Your Music_&_Media page is displayed like MUSIC_%26_MEDIA.html.
A lot of people won't be able to hear the audio file on this page it if they don't have the QuickTime plugin. Here's a better way.

Not all of my photos upload to my website when I publish it. when my site finishes publising I get an error that says, "There was an error communicating with the FTP server. Try again later, or check with your service provider."

I am publishing directly to an FTP server (option 1).  Is this the optimal method or should I be publishing to a folder and then (how do/would I?) publish to my hosting domain?
I'm wondering if this has really anything to do with the publishing process, or whether it just has to do with the photos and/or the photo albums.  I've deleted the photo albums with the missing pictures from my site on iweb thinking a file might be corrupt. (I'm getting the albums from iphoto -- drag/drop method into iweb) I then replaced these albums with the same albums as the previous ones from iphoto and then published my site again -- and the EXACT same photos were once again missing in the NEW albums as were missing in the old albums...
Maybe it is a publishing issue, or it could be a photo/file issue.  However, these albums aren't very large -- the largest containing 135 photos --
Please! if you have any suggestions or ideas as to what is happening I would be greatly appreciative!
I'm pulling my hair out here trying to diagnose the problem...
