I know this in not a new problem but I have tried to follow self help and not having any joy!
very fustrating - I am in Welllingotn NZ and it not hot here! about 12-18 deg C Ambinent, and the fan runs loud!
I have just installed iStat Nano and it says the CPU fan is runnig at arround 4000RPM.
Several shut downs and SMC resets have not worked.....
Runis my fantastic piece of art - but makes a good use for the noise cancelling head phones I bought a couple of years ago....
- Have just read that my 3rd Party RAM may be the culprit - do I have to remove or is there a solution???

HP Spectre XT 13-2005tu - Cooling Fan Countiniously Running At Top Speed From Start Up
Ok, Here's a puzzler if anyone can help. HP Spectre XT 13-2005tui7-3517U @ 1.90Ghz4.00 GB Ram256 SSD HD Has been a great laptop, very happy with it, small light powerful, etc, good battery life, everything I needed as student and as someone who travels a lot for work. Towards the end of 2014 the hinges on the screen gave out. Outside of the warranty period HP were kind enough to fix it, however this didnt get completed until approximately Feb 2015 - when I returned from travelling. At the time they gave it a full service - cleaned it up, updated bios, replaced fan. The cooling fan was replaced as they claimed it was noisy, but to be honest I had never noticed it. As soon as I took it home, the fan went crazy. From the moment the power button was pressed it would run flat out and non-stop. Sometime it would change from flat out to nothing every two seconds for 5 minutes - I took a video of this at the time. I had planned to take it back to the service centre but after a few hours it returned to normal. There were no problems for a while, every now and again it would startup and run flat out constantly for an hour or so but would always go back to normal. A couple of days ago it started this again but just won't stop. The moment the button is pressed it is running flat out until the moment it goes to sleep or is turned off. It has also started with the occasinoal intermittent 'running flat out, then slowing down then flat out then slowing down' continiously over about 5 mins (I took a small video of this as well - https://youtu.be/P2ybdunCZf8). I have: - Updated anything and everything. - Formatted the pc and reinstalled windows. - Rolled back and reinstalled the bios. - Made sure the bios setting to constantly run the fan was off. - Checked that the fan was sqeaky clean. - Installed and monitored temps with HW Monitor - fans run flat out at any CPU temp. - Ran HP system diagnostics that show no errors. - Tried hard resets. - Also checked the CPU usage - fan runs at high speed whether 5% or 95% is being used. - Tried different power settings and changing the CPU Cooling policy within the power settings. I am out of ideas. I have a feeling it might be a hardware fault and that I'm doomed but I am keen to know if anyone else has any thoughts, and espeically if there is anything HP can do or recommend. Hi , Thank you for your query. I understand that you had the display replaced by HP as it quit due to a hinge issue. When you got it back after they had done full service - cleaned it up, updated bios, replaced fan. The cooling fan was replaced as they claimed it was noisy, but to be honest you had never noticed it. As soon as you took it home and powered it on the fan went crazy,running at full speed non stop. The speed sometimes would change from full to nothing every 2-5 minutes. After a few hours it seemed to settle down and work normally.Occasionally the issue would return for a hour but then return to normal.A couple of days ago the issue returned but now remains constant. IMac fan keeps running despite resetting the SMC
My iMac fan keeps running loudly even when the computer isn't doing any thing, and I just started it up.
I have tried resetting the SMC and that didn't help.
I also recently had to insert a new hard drive instead of the old one that failed. I am thinking that either the SSD is just hotter than the old hard drive, or that the hard drive sensor is somehow inverted in the plug. Is there any way of testing the hard drive sensor to see if that is faulty, or to test the fan. When I look at the Activity Monitor the system is 87% idle...Although you don't mention which imac you have since 2009 Apple has used hard drives with the temp sensor built in. When replacing one of these late model drives you have to use the same type hard drive or you get fans running all the time because the temp sensor isn't detected. You might want to try some third party software such as iStat Menus, SMC Fan Control or HDD a Fan Control. Google them for reviews.

Mac Pro 5,1 Fans full throttle, SMC reset does not help

i have the following issue:
- Mac Pro 5,1
- Latest Firmware; no SMC update available
- Fans (of case, not graphics card) running full throttle as soon as OS X is active (installed or in a installation phase).
- During boot up, fans run at usual speed/silent.
- SMC reset (according to: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support) does not help the issue, nor did resetting PRAM.
- Removing mainboard battery did not fix it.
- Resetting the battery using the onboard switch did not fix it.
- Detaching components and reattaching them (RAM etc.) did not fix it.
- Detaching device from Power for a prolongued period did not help.
- Apple Hardware Test AHT (off the original installer disk shipped with the device) tells everything is healthy.
- Having clean installed OS X (both:latest releas and also orignal version from original grey installer disks) did not help.
Then: installed MacsFanControl which allows for checking each of the sensors and each of the fans. using them one by one as a control for the fanspeed, which always succeeds: every sensor delivers meaurements, every fan reacts to adjustments of rotational speed.
BUT: As soon as you choose to let the SMC do the job of controlling the fans, fans switch back to full speed again.
All this after having installed VMWare ESX 5.5 on the machine and then having reverted to OS X 10.10.1/2.
Looks highly like SMC won't get properly reset or may some setting is written where SMC reset does not operate?
Any hint would highly be appreciated since i'm not sure whether i should trust this machine which is meant to act as a server.

the above phenomenon turned out to be rooted in s.th. completely different & unrelated.
Obviously there is a system's preference for the 1st PCI-E slot for the RAID controller to be connected to.
You actually may well plug the controller into slot 2 and 3 as well, and the system will then still boot, even after having moved the controller to a different PCI-E slot (after having installed the OS!), but always the SMC will react like described above. Still not sure what the aforementioned symptoms actually indicated (jsut "irritated" SMC or SMC flat out inoperable) - time's too scarce to investiate this any deeper, sorry...

Hello, I have a late 2012 27" iMac. Its a 3.2 GHz i5 processor. I originally upgraded my ram to 32 GB and was running like a champ for over a year. Then, it started to randomly turn off no matter what I was doing. I took it to the apple store and they said it was the ram. So I ordered 16 GB of ram from Crucial that matched what they said my computer would need. I got it in last week and installed it and it still turns off randomly. I have tried the PRAM and SMC resets and the computer will run like a champ for 15-20 mins then turns off. I would love any help, advice or possible solutions as I am by no means a computer wiz. Very true - and the tests they do at the store are far better than the AHT. As well, Apple does not tell you where it puts the RAM - they just tell you to add RAM in the empty slots, LOL. Your About this Mac > Memory should show your two modules next to one another (which, as I've decided to "name" them would be slots 1 and 3 as showing from the top as you are looking at it with all the slots facing you (the bottom being towards the bottom of the display). The odd thing (to me) is that the 'about this mac' window still shows the same arrangement even though the modules are now placed vertically. In mine (with two rows of two slots side by side), it shows the OEM RAM in the top and the additional RAM I added on the bottom (which is exactly how the slots are arranged):
And, one more thought - maybe way off - the late 2009/mid 2010/early 2011 iMacs had problems with adding a full complement of third party RAM (they were ok with all OEM or a lesser amount of third party RAM - that is why mine only has 12 GB rather than the supported 16 GB). There were several very lengthy threads about this; I will try to find one of them which I had bookmarked (I can't find my bookmarks in this new iteration here)... -

You're right - it is never a good idea to click on links sent in an email unless you are absolutely certain they are legitimate, and that is only becoming more difficult as spammers and phishing attempts are getting better every day. Having no association with Verizon is all the more reason to simply delete the thing.
Next, by supplying your email address all you did was confirm to whatever site was sending you this spam that your email address was legitimate. Again, when in doubt just delete the email and forget you ever saw it.

The good news is that is highly unlikely. The bad news is that your email address might be used as the "from" address for spam sent to others, and that you are only more likely to get more spam from the phony Verizon site as well as every other potentially malicious operators.
The best advice would be to simply abandon that email address, but if you can live with the previous potential concerns it would be overkill. I would recommend changing your passwords for financial institutions (banks, credit cards and so forth) as well as your email account or accounts. That is simply good practice whether or not you did what you did.
As far as any malware is concerned, again that is unlikely, but make sure you run Software Update to get all Apple's latest updates. -
How long should I let Safe Mode startup run? I keep getting the "disk0s2 i/o error" message and I'm just not sure when to give up and try a different method. I already ran disk utility in Recovery Mode and it said there were no repairs needed but it still kept getting stuck on the apple loading screen.
You have limited opportunity to attempt to create a backup of your created files.
That is what the SafeBoot or safemode appears to allow you -- at the moment.
Since the hard disk drive exhibits signs of failure or other major issues, plan
on a replacement in the near future. You may be able to get the computer to
start up in a regular full OS X (not safe mode) but consider its hours are limited.
An externally enclosed hard disk drive (with own power supply, not relying on
Mac ports to run it) is a good basic means of which to use a disk utility to make
a copy or a Clone of the current OS X. This may help retrieve an archive that
could be used along with a Time Machine backup, to restore your Mac once you
get a new hard drive installed inside.

With Firefox as my default browser for a desktop iMac, a note appears "An attempt to change your home page and default search has been blocked" It won't go away. It tells me to click on the checkmark to change settings but that doesn't work and the red x in the upper right hand corner doesn't remove the note which is in the upper left corner of my iMac ??? The only thing that removes the note is quitting Firefox but it reappear as soon as I start Firefox back up ???

If you think about it, the chances of another user who has these two same devices configured this way and also being on an Apple support forum to see your post are about zero.
The following might work, but you will not know until you try.
Configure the DIR-635 to provide a wireless network that uses the exact same wireless network name, exact same wireless security and exact same password as the Belgacom wireless router. Make sure that the DIR-635 is configured in Bridge Mode.
Can I purchase and set-up an Apple Airport Express or Apple Airport Extreme on my level 1 (the ethernet cable running from level 2 to level 1 could plug-into either of those)

V.2.0.6 for Mac universal driver (I suggest you set your Safari prefences, General atb, "Save downloaded file to:" desktop, click the save to drop down, id desktop is not ther, click "other" and select Desktop from the left column. This will download to the desktop as a stand alone installer. After yhe download id complete, quit all applications, run the installer following the prompts, after is says done or complete, log out and reboot.

I reset my cellular data usage every month at the beginning of my billing period so that I can keep track of how much data I am using thru out the month. I do not have the unlimited data plan and have gone over a few times. It's usually the last couple days of my billing cycle and I am charged $10 for an extra gig which I barely use 10% of before my usage is restarted for new billing cycle. FYI, they do not carry the remainder of the unused gig that you purchase for $10 which I disagree with. But have accepted. Lol Moving on.
I have two questions. One possibly being answered by the other. 1. Is cellular data used when I sync to iTunes on my home computer to load songs onto my iPhone from my iTunes library(songs that already exist)? 2. What causes the cellular data usage readings in iPhone settings/general/usage/cellular usage to decrease if my last reset has not changed? It is close to end of my billing cycle and I have been keeping close eye. Earlier today it read around 180mb sent/1.2gb received. Now it reads 90mb sent/980 mb recieved. My last reset date reads the same as before. I don't know if my sync and music management had anything to do with the decrease but i didn't notice the decrease until after I had connected to iTunes and loaded music. I should also mention that a 700mb app automatically loaded itself to my phone during the sync process. Is cellular data used at all during any kind of sync /iPhone/iTunes management? Is the cellular data usage reading under iPhone settings a reliable source to keep track of monthly data usage? Guess turned out to be more than two questions but all related. 1) No.
2) It does provide an estimated usage, but it's not accurate. For accurate determination, you should check the remaining/used MBs from the carrier (most of the carriers provide this service for free).
