TS2570 My computer will not startup further than the white screen with the grey Apple.

I have tried all of the steps at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570, other than the ones requiring a disk. I have no clue where my disk is, I am running Maveriks which was disk free on the last update. I was able to start in safe-mode yesterday, but the internet would not work. Then I started up using another method and the internet worked, but none of my Word docs, PowerPoint slideshows, or PDF files would open. Someone please help me get my computer working normally again. The closest Apple Store is 2 hours away, so if I can avoid that it would be wonderful. Thanks for your help in advance.

If I click on that second link, and try the steps below, will this erase my hard drive or saved items? I ask this because you told me to back up my computer first. And the iOS 7.0.6 was a mis-click, I have the latest OS X installed.
2. Boot with command-S (command also has the cloverleaf or Apple logo on the key, or the Windows logo key may sometimes work on a wired keyboard, though ideally you should have an Apple, MacAlly, or Logitech keyboard with the Apple logo on it). At the prompt type:
/sbin/fsck -fy
Followed by return key. Repeat running /sbin/fsck -fy followed by return key until the system says it is repaired. If it tells you it can't repair it, then
get Alsoft Disk Warrior. If it can repair it, type:
/sbin/mount -uw
Followed by return key. Then type
exit
followed by return key. It should boot normally.

Try this step and if you cannot get your device into recovery mode there is a chance you have a hardware failure and you need to call apple to see what service options you have.

These are related but not identical issues. Their causes are outlined in Intel-based Mac- Startup sequence and error codes, symbols. Solutions may be found in:

In most cases the problems may be caused by one or more of these:
a. Problem with the computer's PRAM - See Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM.
b. Boot drive's directory has been corrupted - Repair with Disk Utility.
c. Critical system files are damaged or deleted - Reinstall OS X.
d. The disk drive is physically non-functional - Replace the hard drive.
Note that the information I have provided is what Apple recommends, If other users suggest different solutions than found here, then be sure what they recommend does not impact on your warranty, if any, or ability to get continuing Apple service.
Please don't start removing drives or changing cables unless you know what you are doing and have exhausted other non-invasive alternatives outlined here. If you perform any work yourself that is unapproved by Apple, then you will void any warranty you may have and lose all further Apple Support.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
The main difference if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion is that you must first boot from the Recovery HD. Simply boot from the Recovery HD to perform the above.
Reinstall Snow Leopard Without Erasing The drive

Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Restart the computer and immediately hold the option key down.
If the computer boots and you see two hard drive icons, use the arrow key to select the Recovery drive, and press Return.
You will get to a screen that looks like the image here:

Select the fourth item and press Return.
In Disk Utility, select the hard drive in the left column, then First Aid, then click on Repair Disk.
When that is done, quit DU and restart the computer.

HT1758 Power failure in the middle of a software update and not the computer will not boot up. The computer just has a white screen with a grey apple and just loads non stop.

My iMac will not boot up after a software update. the screen is all whute will show a grey apple in the middle and will look like it is working but nothing happens; this can go on forever.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have a backup in the form of a bootable clone or Time Machine? Restore that and then try the update again.

Another option might be to download the standalone from Apple Downloads on another Mac and try installing it in Firewire Target Disk Mode to the Mac that was interrupted during the update.

Will not startup - goes straight to white screen

Hi guys,
I think I have killed my new iMac. When I press the startup button I get the familiar blue start up colour, but less than a second later it changes to a white screen with some dark grey blocks at the middle bottom of the display. I cannot start-up in safe mode, force bypass the primary volume or boot from disk. It won't even let me start in firewire mode.
The problem started when I tried using a shareware app off the internet, when I opened it it crashed immedietly with the white/grey screen that I am getting now. Could this be a virus? The keyboard appears to still work as I could eject the CD that was in.
Any help is much appreciated

Hi, Sorry to hear about your issues. Do you have an iMac (Flat Panel) (white hemispherical dome and display floating on chrome arm) or an Alu /White Intel iMac?
It's not a Virus as there aren't any for OS X yet.

Before taking your iPad to your Apple Store, reboot it: To reboot, hold the power and home buttons at the same time for at least 10 seconds (keep holding past the swipe to shut down bar if it appears) until the Apple Logo appears, then let go of both buttons and your iPad will reset. If that doesn't solve your problem, the next step would be connect to iTunes and restore your iPad. If that fails, THEN you take it to Apple.

3 years ago I bought an IMac Desktop that I am using for a lot of things but the most important for dvd montage in Imovies and Idvd.
Now today when I opened my computer I get as usual the white screen with the Apple symbol but there were all over the screen vertical lines with green pixels and after a while the screen gets grey and I get message to restart my computer using the power button or the restart button and when I do so each time the same is happening somebody can tell me what is happening and what caused this. This computer is my work and now I have no income anymore.
On the Apple support site they are asking to enter the serial number and when I do so I get message it is wrong but it is the only one I have and I buy this computer in Cairo Egypt. I am living in Hurghada in Egypt for the moment. When I call the technical support of the shop where I buy it they are telling me that it is the hard disk or ram and that I probably lost everything on it and they are asking a big amount to repair.

You can find the serial number either in About this Mc in the Menu bar under the , or it should be on a sticker under the foot of the machine.
If you have the install discs, try booting from them, holding down the c key and then using Disk Utility to check the drive.
You can also boot into Safe mode
To start up into Safe Mode (to "Safe Boot"), do this:
   1. Be sure the computer is shut down.
   2. Press the power button.
   3. Immediately after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key.
      Tip: The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.
   4. Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple and progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.2 through 10.3.9, you will see "Safe Boot" on the Mac OS X startup screen.
During the startup in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.
Please post back with results,
To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

When the iMac turns on it does not advance it's start up beyond the 'White Screen' with the apple logo at the center.

Last previous action: Used Firewire cable and "Target Mode" to copy files from G4 eMac to the PowerBook.
I worked from the eMac to the PowerBook, making the PowerBook the "Target". Files seemed to transfer OK. Won't boot from InstallDisc. Holding down T on startup results in Target mode screen. I have a G4 iMac and a G4 eMac. Can I use either of these with Firewire cable to boot-up my PowerBook ?

Hello,
It sounds to me like the PowerBook is stuck in target disk mode.
It's expecting the iMac/eMac to be there when booting. Seeming it's not attached, it will show a flashing folder.
If your PowerBook internal drive is bootable, then simply hold down the option key when booting and select it's internal hard drive. That should boot your PowerBook into Mac OS X.

Did you drop the iPad?
Try this - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
