TS2709 Apple TV error: open port 3689

I just did a factory restore on my Apple TV.  I then set it up again from scratch and synced data successfully.  Then I did a ATV software update to the latest version.  After this I noticed my photos dissappeared from the ATV, but all other synced content remained.  iTunes sees the ATV but now when I try and sync it, I get an error telling me that "ATV isn't responding and to check my firewall settings to be sure that port 3689 is open".
I've checked the firewall and iTunes is listed in windows 7 firewall authorized programs and the settings for that program are good.  I even tried specifically changing the port to TCP 3689 and it still gave me the same error message when I tried to sync.
Right now I can't sync my ATV because of this problem.  There are no valid articles in the apple knowledgebase about this problem that I can find either.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a fix?

firewall is not the place you want to see if it's blocked it's in your wifi router you want to verify it
how you go about this depend on the router it's manual would likely describe how one unblock ports

    Hi,
    Error:
GGSCI (ggtarget) 16> start replicat RLOAD
Sending START request to MANAGER ...
ERROR: opening port for MGR MGR (Connection refused).
You can start Manager, but when you try to start Replicat, GGSCI gives me a connection timeout error
    Solution:
GoldenGate uses a TCP/IP socket to communicate between local processes. When you issue a START, STOP, SEND, or other command in GGSCI, the command interface will try to open a local port for the process.
Here is how to find out which local ports these processes are listening on. In the dirpcs directory, there will be one file for each running GoldenGate process.
For Manager, the file name will be MGR.pcm.
For Extract, it will be <GROUP_NAME>.pce.
For Replicat, it will be <GROUP_NAME>.pcr.
These are text files that can be viewed by using cat or any equivalent command. For example, the MGR.cpm file content will read like this:
PROGRAM MGR PROCESSID MGR PORT sys1.4356 PID 60070
After the keyword PORT will be the local hostname and the port number that Manager is supposed to be running on. In the preceding example, the hostname is sys1, and the port is 4356.
The program (ggsci) tries to use that hostname to communicate to the process (Extract/Replicat/Manager) when the command is issued in GGSCI. If you get a timeout or connection-refused error on the command, that means GoldenGate could not connect to the local host. Most of the time, you should have no problem connecting to a local host, but when you have the wrong IP address or routine table configured in your TCP/IP settings, connection errors can happen.
To troubleshoot this, follow the steps below
    1. Try to ping that host name from the OS shell to see if it goes to the correct IP address (which should be the one for the local system).
    2. If the ping is successful, try to telnet to the Manager port on your local host. You will be able to see your telnet session connect if a Manager is listening on that port.
    Here is an example:
    shell>telnet
    telnet> open sys1 4356
    Trying 100.100.100.100...
    Connected to sys1.oracle.com (100.100.100.100).
    Escape character is '^]'.
    3. If your telnet session times out or gets a connection-refused error, that means either the hostname is wrong or the port number is wrong.
If the ping to the hostname listed in the pcm/pce/pcr file fails, or if you cannot connect your telnet session to the port listed in the file(s), contact your network engineers to get the TCP/IP issue resolved.
    Hope this information helps.
    Thanks & Regards

  • Apple TV not responding-Port 3689

I have been syncing with my Apple TV for almost 2 years. My only recent changes have been the upgrade to Snow Leopard. When I tried to sync today and clicked on the more info I received the following response:
Once you have synced or paired the Apple TV to your Mac to establish a syncing or streaming connection, iTunes may say "The Apple TV [Name] is not responding. Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."
Firewall is not enabled presently. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Is that the message you get, or are you saying you have re-linked the library (pass code) as a troubleshooting step and then get the message: "The Apple TV [Name] is not responding. Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689."

  • Error in Port 3689

My internet is working just fine, but I've been having errors in various applications connecting to other networks. My iTunes tries to connect to a shared network that I know accepts connections, one that I have previously connected to many times, but it responds that the firewall is set so that it does not allow sharing through port 3689. When I looked elsewhere, it said that that port is used for iTunes music sharing, but those problems were from before Panther came out, let alone Leopard. I've had similar problems with other programs saying that it cannot connect due to my firewall settings. However, my firewall settings are, and always have been to allow all incoming connections. Beyond that I have no idea as to why I am having these issues with my firewall. What can I do to fix this problem?

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? I really have no idea what to do now

  • TS2709 I've check my port 3689 is open and I'm still receiving an error

I'm receiving the error message that Apple TV cannot communicate with my iTunes account.  I've check my port settings and still receive the error.  Please help!

the port needs to be open in the computers firewall

  • Fix for slow Apple TV sync or stream (port 3689 alert)

If you use Intego VirusBarrier X6, syncing or streaming to your Apple TV may be extremely slow or stop altogether. Your network connection may also be broken. The same may also be true with other virus protection or internet security software.
In many cases, you may receive an alert message saying: Check that any firewall software running on this computer has been set to allow communication on port 3689.
Here is how to modify your VirusBarrier Firewall to open port 3689. If you use other security products, you will need to check with the vendor for specific instructions.
    1) In VirusBarrier X6, go to the Firewall section and set the Mode to Advanced.
    2) Click the "+ icon" at the bottom left of the window. This will add a new "untitled settings" entry to the list on the left of the window.
    3) Right click or control-click in the rules window (the blue and white striped area of the window). Choose "Insert Standard Set" and select whatever setting you were using before (for example: Client Only, Client Local Server, which is the default setting). This will insert the standard rules for that set.
    4) Now you must create a new rule for the Apple TV. Click the + button (bottom left). The new rule window will appear.
-- You can name it anything you like, but something that tells you what the rule is for would be recommended.  For example: Apple TV.
-- Set the source as "Local Network", the destination should already by "My Mac".
-- The 'Service' option is where you assign what service this rule applies to. However,  there will not be an Apple TV option in the list. You must create a new service. Click the '+ sign' next to the services drop down menu. A "new service" window will appear. Name the service something appropriate for it's function (for example: Open port 3689), set the Protocol to TCP, click Single Port, and enter 3689 for the Port.
-- Leave the Interface set to Any, and make sure Allow is enabled.
-- Allow should be enabled, then click OK.
    5) This new service you just created will now be at the bottom of the Rules list of your new "untitled settings". You MUST drag it to the top of the list (making it rule number 01).
    6) Click the button next to your new "untitled settings" to activate them. Apple TV should now be able to sync (or stream) without problem.

I am having the same problem since upgrading to ATV 2.3 and iTunes 8.0.2.20 for a PC. Since people are having this issue with Mac iTunes, my guess is that it is ATV 2.x that's the problem. Everything stopped syncing as far as I could tell. Apple Support was totally unhelpful. Wanted me to pay for extended care even since I bought my ATV last year. Told me it was "buyer beware" with respect to updates, and that my only recourse was to role back to the factory default (version 1.1) - that is unless I wanted to pay for support. So I asked her if she'd heard of the problem, and she said no. Excuse me? What would I be paying for then? Why can't this company support the piece of junk software they just released??? They are shooting themselves in the foot because now that I've rolled back to 1.1, I can't buy the new content they're pushing from the iTunes store. I've never been this put off by a company and the false advertising that "it just works."

    Thanks Rudegar,
I only synch and do not stream off of my 1st Gen AppleTV
I will try with ethernet but will be a pain in the butt if i can not fix it with wifi for long term fix
I may end up trying to do a named IP address vs DHCP for this appleTV (not sure if i can do both and do not want to remove DHCP as i have a bunch of sensors and other devices that I prefer to dynamically add to the network via DHCP vs. assign each one
Will keep working on other fix options (factory reset, etc.)
    Thanks again

  • Apple TV w/OS X server 10.5.5 - port 3689 error

    Hello
I wondered if anyone could help with this problem.
We just changed our former server (a mac mini running OSX 10.5.5) to OSX server. It simply served our iTunes library around the home/office, which it did effortlessly to multiple computers and two Apple TV's, all hard-wired.
Now that we have changed to Server, when trying to set up the Apple TV's in iTunes, i get an error 'the device didn't respond, please check port 3689 in your firewall settings'
I did check this - all ok, and i also tried completely disabling the firewall, but still no luck.
The only change on the network was the changing of software.
    Does anyone have any thoughts?
    Many thanks

  • How do I fix Apple TV/iTunes Sync issue (port 3689)

I am having a port 3689 issue, I looked through all the other topics on it here, seems common, I only just bought my Apple TV unit and thinking about returning it, the guy from Apple support tried his best but still no fix.
iTunes says port 3689 is blocked, I have tried the following to rectify
    1) Opened up port 3689 and 5353 on the modem
    2) connected the Apple TV box directly to the Netcomm modem avoiding the wireless network
    3) Called apple for assistance
    4) disabled my firewall completely
    5) re-instated the firewall and opened up ports in the firewall itself as a rule
After all this still says it's blocked.
    Any other ideas?
    Please help

I had the same problem. I tuned off the firewall, rebooted computer, unplugged the router and turned off AppleTV, then I turned them all back on.
    Then it works fine.
If I do all that but leave the firewall on, AppleTV syncs correctly the first time iTunes is loaded. After that I get the error and need to either turn off iTunes or simply reboot the computer and the sync goes back to working (again, first time only).
While it it definitely seems like a firewall issue, it seems to be a problem within iTunes/AppleTV and I doubt there is a way it can be fixed permanently by managing the ports (i.e. wait for the next update for the real fix).

    Hi the_mad_movies,
It seems like this article will be the best option for addressing this issue:
Error 3194, Error 17, or "This device isn't eligible for the requested build"

  • Dreaded "port 3689 blocked" message when trying to sync Apple TV

    I have a suggestion that MIGHT help others . . .
I, too, received the infamous "3689 blocked" message when syncing my ATV (1st gen) to iTunes.  Never had the issue before, maybe the latest update to iTunes had something to do with it?
Anyway, I tried everything . . . turning off firewall, adding access to port 3689 (TCP protocol) for the Apple TV in my router software, etc.  All to no avail.  Same error.  Then, I came across a reference online to adding access to port 5353 (UDP protocal) . . . that was the trick (at least for me).  So, include both in your firewall access and/or router port forwarding access and see if that does the trick for you.

You don't need to, just check your firewall settings and ensure that access is allowed to iTunes.
Are you running any other security software on your Mac.

  • Apple TV and Port 3689

I am running iTunes 8.0 and OSX 10.5. I have a Windows wireless network. Unexpectedly I cannot sync my Apple TV with my computer. It tells me I have a firewall blocking Port 3689, and I don't as far as I can tell. And I haven't changed any firewall protections until I tried to fix this problem. It used to run fine, and other than iTunes 8.0 getting installed fairly recently, (the only change I can recall)I've had no problems syncing. I have disabled my Windows firewall, added the port number specifically in my Windows computer, run a Mac disk utilty to fix any permissions on my Mac, all to no avail. I cannot follow the directions posted about allowing the port to be opened on the Mac because there is no way to do that in OSX 10.5 that I can find, although there apparently was in previous versions. I have made sure that file sharing is enabled and that iTunes is specifically noted in the section allowing incoming connections (I am allowing ALL incoming connections in the Mac firewall). Anybody else have any ideas? Thanks for your help!

when you say that your daughter's iTunes "stole" the apple TV pairing...
    1. it sounds as though you are all on the same computer. are you all using different user accounts on the same computer?
    2. has either of your two daughters ever paired the apple TV up with their library?
    3. this one's conditional but it is something you could try:
    a. IF your daughters are using different user accounts on the same computer
    AND
    b. IF they have never paired their libraries with the Apple TV
    THEN
    c. Try going into iTunes on their Windows User accounts, and go to Edit...Preferences...Apple TV Tab... and once there uncheck "Look for Apple TVs." From this same screen you can also determine if the Apple TV is paired with their iTunes library or not and remove the pairing if necessary.
IF this doesn't work or if the conditions I am perceiving based off of the info you provided are not correct, then please provide more info and we'll take it from there.
    Good Luck with it!

After a few hours the same issue started again. (Port 3689 error) I checked my router settings and it shows ATV asd connected to my netrwork. ATV also shows in iTunes devices. It asll works till I try to sync. Then the error pops up
I tired restoring ATV to factory settings. Even backed iTunes up to version 8 and every combonation therein. I started an older Gateway running Vista 64bit and it syncs fine with ATV although it's slow and I have to transfer movies  from my Win 7 to tyhe Vista machiner.
