If you synced your iPod Touch with iTunes, you already created a complete backup of all its content.

You must update your iTunes software to 10.5 first then you can upgrade to iOS 5.

If you weren't able to sync the purchases to a computer previously and now your iPod needs to be restored so you can't sync it now, then you may be out of luck and will need to purchase your content again. Officially Apple does not allow redownloads of purchased items other than iPhone/iPod touch applications and iBooks. The official statement of their policy can be found here, among other places.
You can try contacting iTunes Store Customer Service (select the "Music Purchases" or "Video Purchases" category, as appropriate, then "Lost or Missing Items". You'll find either an "Express Lane" button - just follow the instructions to get to the contact form - or an "Email Us" button) ") and explaining what happened. Reportedly in some cases Apple has allowed redownloading on a one-time basis. But don't count on it.

i have a ipod nano 5th generation. use to work fine now will not sync. have done the 5rs several times all that got me was no songs on my ipod at all. have latest version of itunes. when run diognostics test on itunes pass all but says no ipod touch found. whay is it saying no touch when its a nano? I will never purchase another ipod only worked until the warnety ended.
Although you used the new USB 3.0 port, the actual connection speed is still USB2.0, as the iPod Dock connector, does not have the 10 times faster USB3.0 signal pins, the connection speed is still 480Mbits/s
I assumed that you have tried the other USB 2.0 port to no success..
Can you do the iPod Disk diagnostic as posted earlier by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but helps in troubleshooting.

ITunes Claims My iPod Touch Needs to be Erased
Here is my issue...
Our computer was recently repaired. In the process, it was discovered that iTunes had some major issues. The technician did a thorough uninstall , including removing iTunes from the registry, and reinstalled it. I added all of our music back into our iTunes library, with the exception of playlists because those were lost. When I plugged in my iPod touch, iTunes told me to erase my iPod if I want it to sync with this computer. Windows was not re-installed, the hard drive was not replaced, and all of the prior system configurations remain the same (becides the fact was iTunes was reinstalled). I do not want to erase my iPod, as I have application data on it. Also, my family has 5 iPods, and that would be a very long process to recreate all the playlists, erase iPods, and set up the iPods as new ones. Any help or suggestions are greatly apprecieated.This is correct.
It will sycn with one and only one itunes library. As you now have a new itunes library, you will need to erase and sync with your new library.
Backup your ipod first, then sync:

It wont charge but it is syncing, I recently updated Itunes, and the charging icon shows up on iTunes
Did you try another USB port or the wall adapter, or another USB cable?
Also see if a reset may help. To reset the iPod hold the sleep and home button for about 10 sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data doing a reset. -
So did i really lose all my stuff and have to start over? l do have an external hard-drive from my last computer (that crashed) but when i had it repaired by a professional the next time i went to listen to itunes it said that it couldnt play any of my songs becuz they weren't in their original locations. l dont know what to do. ill be so upset if i lost everything! i even have my nursing school work on there!!!!

Download the appropiate one and plug your iPod in to your computer. In iTunes, hit the "Check for Update" button while holding down the Option key. You will see an "Open File" dialog. Locate your .ipsw file and press Enter.
The update should be accomplished.

Ipod Touch error 1611 during restoring. PLEASE HELP!!
I've bought my new ipod touch then I Updated to the new version. After that, there was an error showing on iTunes that my ipod touch had to be restored. Then in the middle of the reparing, it apears a message saing it couldnt restore due to error 1611. Please help me! I Have no idea what to do. I have allready reinstaled itunes and all apple aplicantions and it still happens this.
When I connect Itouch to itunes, it says that its on restore mode and happens this error. And all the discriptions of the itouch on iTunes says "N/A".

Ipod touch 2nd generation (works fine), but will not shut off
my ipod touch 2nd gneration works fine, but it will not shut off. This use to work: I would hold down both top and face button for about 10 seconds and it would shut down. Now nothing happens no matter how long I hold those 2 buttons down. Any suggestions?
Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
- Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

My ipod touch needed to be updated so I did and now it won't turn on all it does is show the itunes icon and says toconnect it to itunes so I did and let it be updated and now it wont turn on and I tried resetting but nothing changed.
Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

OR if I cannot update to software 3.0, how can I find apps that will work just for my ipod touch?It sounds like you have a 1G iPod Touch, in which case you can only upgrade to iOS version 3.1. Here is a link to purchase the update.

Ok i recently tried to restore my ipod touch but when i plug it in it says your ipod needs to be restored. but when i try to restore it downloads the software and while its downloading it pops up a message saying your ipod needs to be restored. when the download is finished it doesnt restore or do anything and it stays stuck on the plug your ipod into itunes screen somebody please help me.
