TS2800 why do I get "an error occurred while backing up this iPod (-5000)"?

I am trying to update my daughter's iPod to the latest OS, and I keep getting "An error occurred while backing up this iPod (-5000). Would you like to continue to update this iPod? Continuing will result in the loss of all contents on this iPod."
Any suggestions to fix?

Based on this article, it looks like you've had a communication issue with the iTunes Store (note where the -5000 error appears):

  • Update to 5.0.1 "an error occurred while backing up this iPod (-5000)

Win XP with current updates. itunes 10.5.2.11 - ipod is 4.2.1 - last years, no camera.
I was able to sync and backup as part of that process without a problem.
Whenever I try to do the 5.0.1 update, it does the preparing for backup, no problem, begins backing up then gets the above error along with:
"Would you like to continue to update this ipod? Continuing will result in loss of all content on this ipod"
    Of course I respond No.
Anyone else getting this, or have any ideas?

I have Zonealarm antivirus. There is a setting that says files and downloads are scanned when accessed. I turned that off for the duration of the update and was able to complete the update ok

*Would you like to continue to update this iPod without backup?*
Continuing without backup will result in the loss of all contents on this iPod.
This is the message I am receiving each time I try to install the iPod/iPhone 2.0 upgrade on my iPod Touch. I upgraded to iTunes 7.7.1.11 and then downloaded the iPod/iPhone 2.0 upgrade. When I go to install it I receive the the above message. Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?
    Thanks,
    Jim

    Hi,
Not sure how to resolve the problem, does it really matter that your iPod will not be backed up? If so, why not back up manually before installation?
I haven't moved from 2.0 to 2.0.1 yet but when I do I am going to remove all content, music, video and apps beforehand. I am hoping this will speed the process as the backup should take less time and give the little sod less excuse to throw a fit.
    Good luck,
    Dud.

  • An error occurred while backing up this iPod (-120)

I have an iPod Touch 2G that I'm trying to upgrade to iOS 4. Every time I try, I get the message:
*An error occurred while backing up this iPod (-120).*
*Would you like to continue to update this iPod without*
    backup?
Coninuing without backup will result in the loss of all contents on
    this iPod.
Now, I don't want to lose all the contents so how do I fix it so the backup doesn't fail?

    Its not any hardware issues
i have 1395GB free on my harddrive and it wont backup or transfer anything from my ipod.
Its more of a software issue
once you attempt atleast once to install iOS4 a bunch of data will be left behind from the install even if it fails. Itunes is very buggy and the iOS4 update is glitchy specially with ipods. I have tries twice and itunes really isnt cooperating with my ipod
its constantly freezing my ipod with that little spinning circle.
So i myself am also waiting for a later release/update of iOS4 and itunes until ill update my ipod
this release isnt stable or safe at the moment, so id recommend you also wait a week or two or until a few days after apple releases their iphone 4 since there will be lots of traffic blocking their servers. I downloaded and saved the 4.0 os update to flashdrive just incase so i wont hve to download it again :]. but yea
id say do a factory restore to 3.0 or 3.1.x or if you had it earlier than 3.0 go to 2.0? Then update to 3.0
rhen update to 4.0 instead of installing 4.0 with apps an stuff cluttering the device install. If you can, email all your photos or whatever you need to yourself, and write down all your songs and apps And bookmarks, then erase eerything and install os4 then reinstall all your apps and music and pictures.
But my final advice would be to just wait it out. When 2.0 and 3.0 were released they messed up many ipods by messing up their wifi and firmware, and later on with the later updates it could not be fixed, so id say first install a good release and not just regular 4.0.0 id say wait atleast until 4.0.1 and a itunes update
this should fix everything, the problem is that they rushe it into production and ddnt test enough apparently.

  • An error occurred while backing up this iPad (-5000)

I'm trying to update someone else's iPad for him. Windows XP Home computer. Latest version of iTunes. The iOS 5 file has downloaded from Apple. When I start the upgrade, first step is a backup of the iPad. I get maybe 4 green bars on the progress window and then get an error message that states "An error occurred while backing up this iPad (-5000). I stop at this point.
Apple KB has a long list of error numbers for this message, but not -5000.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I had the same issues.  My computer runs Windows XP Media Center Edition. The itunes update downloaded easily but i received the -5000 message when I tried to update the Ipad software iOS 5. After many, many unsuccessful attempts to correct the problem, I disabled my Norton Antivirus and it worked without any more snags.  It still took about another 45 minutes to complete the install but there were no more errors.
To sum it up---DISABLE YOUR ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE--and that will probably fix the issue.

  • Error occurred while backing up this iPod (-50)

    How's Life?
While trying the ios5 update, I receive the following message:
    iTunes
An error occurred while backing up this iPod (-50).
Would you like to continue to update this iPod?
Continuing will result in the loss of all contents on this iPod
                                          Continue Cancel
Thankfully I did my iPod touch first (didn't read the unbolded 'loss of all contents'), because when I hit continue it erased my touch and put ios5 on it.
We can right click both my "new" touch and her ios4 touch, neither have the backup option to start/create a backup.
We can do edit/perferences/devices and there are no backups listed.
      Any suggestions?

    Am using windows 7
    Closed itunes
    start/pearl
    pasted this command:
      "%ProgramFiles%\iTunes\iTunes.exe" /setPrefInt DeviceBackupsDisabled 1
    and enter
    restarted itunes
    and all is well again.
Looks like -50 also means that itunes backup has been disabled

  • I've been trying to backup my ipod for two days and now get this message - An error occurred while backing up this iPod (0xE8000084). Would you like to continue to update this iPod?

I've been trying for the last two days to backup my ipod touch before I sync.  Now I get this message.

It's likely that your backup is corrupt. Try deleting the backup, then right click on the name of the phone in iTunes and choose "back up". To delete go to iTunes Preferences, Devices tab. Highlight and delete the most recent backup. Note that sometimes deleting this way leaves some garbage around that can still interfere with a new backup, so you should verify that the backup folder is empty.
    from: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946
The folder where your backup data are stored varies depending on the computer's operating system.   Make sure the backup folder is included in your periodic data-backup routine.
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac:  ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP:  \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista and Windows 7:  \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press the Return key.

I have been attempting to update my iPod Touch to ios 5 from version 4.3.5. I have followed all suggestions.  My Windows 7 Ultimate OS is current.  I am running the latest version of iTunes.  I have disabled my anti-virus software and disconnected all USB peripherals with the exception of my mouse and keyboard.  I have rebooted my system and disabled virus software and directtly attempted to update my iPod touch, and I still receive the same message while the system tries to run backup.
Now ios 6 is out and I still cannot get to ios 5.
Any assistance would be much appreciated!
