TS2948 cracked lid hinge

What is Apple doing about the cracked lid hinges on the macbook air

Any luck having apple replace the macbook air hinge under the replacement program? http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2948 (It looks like the page was last modified on September 4th 2012). Is it worth having the apple store geniuses look at it or will it be a waste of time?
If not were you able to find replacement parts & fix the MBA yourself?
Thanks in advance

My Macbook pro (bought in november 2008) has started to crack!! It seems like it's getting worse... It looks just like this:

Do you think Apple will replace it?

I have the similar problem but my local official apple store told me that it wasn't cover by warranty. They said they could not find any existing case or documentation on this problem thus it is not manufacturer defect and I will have to pay $1100 if I want to fix it.
I would be grateful if you could give me some information regarding this internal document you are referring in your post, so I can find out more and go back to them with this internal document. Thank you

  • Satellite lid hinge broken

I am currently deployed to the Middle East.  Stateside, I work as a computer technician and operate a helpdesk. I deal with various computer brands on a day to day basis. I bought a Toshiba laptop, model Satellite C655-S5122, for personal use from a friend before I deployed. I already owned an ASUS tablet but wanted a way to more conveniently take online college courses. The Toshiba was only two months old when I purchased it. I inspected the computer and there was no damage to the outside and functioned properly.  Three months after I purchased the computer I noticed the left hinge of the lid did not close properly.  Not long afterwards the right hinge started malfunctioning also. I have seen this issue in other computer brands. Typically the issue can be resolved with replacing a screw that is loose or fallen out all together. I took the back off the computer in an attempt to tighten the screws that hold the hinges in place. It did not take me long to realize just how poorly made this computer is. The hinges were screwed into the bottom plastic shell. The plastic screw holes that hold the hinges in place had completely broken off.  The screw holes were not even reinforced. I understand this is a base model computer; however, it was unable to hold up to normal wear and tear. The computer has not been dropped, hit, or slammed.  When closing the lid I have always held both sides and closed it easily.  I am very disappointed in how this computer was designed.  I have attached pictures showing the problem.  Pic 1 shows the screws that hold down the hinge with the broken plastic attached.Pic 2 shows the plastic that houses the screw holes. The plastic was painted copper to look like metal.Pic 3 shows both hinges that have broken the plasticPic 4 shows the broken plastic that used to be the screw holes I want to reiterate that the computer in the above pictures was not dropped or mishandled in any way. The damages occurred from normal wear and tear. The Toshiba Satellite C655-S5122 is by far the most poorly designed computer I have ever worked on. I will not be purchasing another Toshiba brand product and will not recommend the brand to my customers until Toshiba can produce a better product.

So my son got the Satellite C655 for Christmas 2011. He only needed it for minecraft so it seemed like a more than cabable laptop. How wrong.Wish I had seen rewiews here first. The hinge broke on the right side of the laptop, and he continued to use it, though not much time passed before the screen stopped working. We got him another one (ok so now I sound really dumb..). Anyways we put the broken one to one side until my wife said she could do with a new laptop, You know what? We should get the broken one repaired under warranty. HaHa..You have all read the rest, pay for sending it back after explaining the reason for sending it back, and of course Sir, We at Tossiba will fix it for you.So now...

  • Cracks near hinges and bottom cover falling off

My 2010 MacBook is cracked at the hinges and the bottom cover is warped and slowly falling off. Can I get these fixed for free?

It would be worth asking at an Apple store!
When I had a battery replaced a year or so ago, my bottom cover was improperly replaced and appeared warped.
Without batting an eye, they offered to replace it - no charge.
I thought they were just being kind but it turns out it's a common problem on MacBooks from a certain time period (circa2010), so it is Mac's POLICY to replace them without charge when they warp!
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook-bottomcase/
I have the same cracks appearing at the hinges (no bumps or drops, only a well-traveled and much used Mac!) but haven't asked about what obtaining a replacement shell would entail. If I do so before you, I'll reply again with what the terms / cost of replacement would be!

  • TS2948 MacBook Air hinge was failed today. How I can fix it?

I was pretty "surprised' today about hinge on my MacBookAir1,1. It was jammed and after my one attempt to open screen it was broken. Where and how I can fix it? Any chance for Apple Service in UA?

I would try to help, except I don't know what "UA" means.

  • Closed lid operations?

I don't have a dock, but I do have an exterior display, a bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Is there a way to keep working with the lid closed? or do I have to keep it cracked so it doesn't sleep?

Unless Apple has substantially changed the physical architecture of the Pro line, there is absolutely NO communication between the keyboard tray and the rest of the machine, except for a tiny slot to pass the ribbon cable thru, for the simple reason of keeping the portable safe against accidental spills. Hence air cannot be "drawn thru the keyboard". There will be a cooling effect of the air flowing on top, especially over the palmrests, but most of the cooling is done by the air flowing under the computer, or entering the slot behind the lid hinge and exiting the side slots due to the fans. Thus the advantage of using any of the accessories that lift the portable off the desk for better airflow.
Correct me if things have changed recently, but didn't the Pro's keep awake automatically as soon as you plugged in a keyboard, mouse and external display, even if you closed the lid? ("Plugging in" can be physical, or virtual via Bluetooth, btw)

  • Re: Split on upper lid on Satellite P100

I have had my laptop now for about 2 years. During the first year a split appeared near the hinge and the lid was replaced under warranty.
Now nearly a year later the same thing has happened again and the laptop is out of warranty.
Has anyone else had a similar problem and where can I get a permanent solution to the problem so that it does not need replacing again.

    Hi Michael
Unfortunately, you will have to replace this cracked lid again.
Something similar happened to a friend of mine and since the second replacement everything is ok now.
It seems the ASP has replaced the upper lid with the new designed one.
    Good luck

  • Macbook Air hinges question

just got the Decoded leather cover for my Macbook Air (which is just beautiful with no covers!)
it got a leather and elastic straps that won't let the lid close completely (few mm gaps)
asy idea if this would harm or loosen the lid hinges over time?

A: it wont let the lid close , I can tell that by looking without you telling me that that is so.
it can keep the unit from going into sleep because the magnetic reed switch isnt making contact with the magnet in the display to activate it.
if there is any hinge torque when close due to the gap from squeezing it while closed at the opening point, there could be an issue, but that requires firsthand examination, which I cannot see.

  • Using Macbook without lid/display (and mounted upside down)

I have a MBP with a damaged LCD that I want to connect to a kitchen HDTV and mount upside down. Since the display is useless, don't need a camera, and I want easy access to the power button, I want to remove the lid and mount the MBP upside down to the underside of a above-counter kitchen cabinet (not enclosed). Is there any problem with removing the lid and mounting/operating upside down? Makes for a sweet kitchen internet station, and will be very cool to have the MBP and cables mounted out of sight (wireless keyboard/mouse of course!).

BSteely, thanks for the response. Unfortunately I started dissasembly before I checked back on the forum. I removed the damaged LCD and got crazy and removed the lid frame. I continuously checked the MBP operation after each step to make sure it was still working (using external display). The only thing I did not check along the way was internet access (wireless router). I ended up cutting the connection to what I believe is the antenna/receiver? Because when I mounted the MBP under the cabinet and turned it on, everything worked fine except no internet access. I am in the process of trying to reconnect the wires on what I think is the antenna (was mounted in the bottom of the lid/hinge area. Do you think this is my problem? Other than that everything working OK so far.

  • HP Envy 6 1210sw - both hinges broken, already repaired two times

Dear Support Team  / Forum Users, I am writing to seek for advice on the famous 'broken hinges' issue, this time with my 2 years-old HP Envy 6 1210sw laptop.  Both of the screen hinges are broken now (for the third time), which makes it impossible to use the laptop comfortably of course. This particular machine has already been serviced twice due to the same issue - I have always got a new screen lid replaced. However, as this is a design fault, the hinges would be broken again after 4-6 months of usage. The warranty on the machine has ended in April 2015, however the warranty on the screen lid / hinges must have been extended, as they have been replaced. It makes no sense though to replace them over and over again with a new screen lid, as they will brake anyway. HP, please advise what could be done in this matter - do you replace the badly designed machines with the new ones? Thank you for your support.

    Hi @MV91 ,

  • Officejet j6580 broken hinges

I recenlty purchased a Officejet J6580 All-in-One printer, it is pretty good for all the features it has.  It has one major problem.   The hinges broke.   Where do i find replacement hinges for this thing?   I find the weight of the top section of the scanning portion a bit heavy, and thus I think the plastic hinges didn't live up to the design very well.
I didn't put much strain into the latch portion, nor did I use the scanner often.  Just, noticed one side wasn't right the other day, and voila, Both hinges broken now.
So this causes the scanner to not work, and often if the lid is not closed straight, the printer just doesn't want to work.
Where can I find replacement hinges.

Hello jftitan, and welcome to the HP Forums.
I see you are running into issues with the scan lid hinges.  If they appear to physically be damaged, I would recommend contacting HP directly.  You can utilize this website to learn how to contact HP appropriately, based on your region: Contact HP Worldwide.

  • Pavilion dv7 broken hinge

Looked at my DV7 4280us a little closer. It looks like the problem is with the hinge being too tight. Movement of the screen display eventually breaks the screw from it's plastic mounting. Causing plastic pieces to go everywhere. Then when the hinge breaks free it starts bending the cooling fins. Not only would you need new hinges but the complete bottom case. Seems like a very poor design.

The left hinge on my HP Envy broke yesterday. I take very good care of my laptop and there is no way I mishandled it to break the case. Looks like a design issue. Several years ago I had a HP laptop where the upper lid hinge broke. HP repaired the laptop as it was an acknowledged design flaw.
My current laptop is under warranty.

  • WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE AND CLIENT SUPPORT OF ANY COMPUTER COMPANY EVER

i bought the new thinkpad and recd the end of dec 2012. I recoomended it to many in my company and am sorry they all started buying them. We all got the ultra book think pads. My was core 17-quite expensive/4333 SERIES. I bought iT with the warranty. NOTE- WHEN YOU BUY THE THINK PAD - YOU NEED THE EXTRA WARANTY NO ONE TELLS YOU ABOUT -PRO WARRANTY.THE WARANTY YOU GET FOR 3 YEARS IS BOGUS.
i USED MY THINK PAD LIGHTLY AND ALWAYS TOOK GOOD CARE OF IT. I PREPARED FOR 6 MONTHS A PROJECT AND HAD IT SAVED TO MY HARD DRIVE BUT NO COPIES. THE MACHINE WENT COMPLETELY DEAD. I PANICKED AS THE INFO WAS NEEDED FOR A MAJOR PRESENTATION I AM MAKING NEXT WEEK.
i CALLED LENOVA IMMEDIATELY AND THEY FGAVE ME 5 PHONE NUMBERS SO I CAN BRING IT IN AND HAVE IT SERVICED. IT WAS UNDER WARANTY UNTIL 2015.
ALL 5 PLACES THEY GAVE DO NOT FIX THE COMPUTERS. I CALLED LENOVO BACK BECAUSE THEY COULD NOT EVEN FIND A DEALER THAT COULD FIX THE MACHINE. I SENT IT TO THEM ON THE 25TH. ON THE 27TH I USED MY CASE NUMBER AND FOUND IT WAS IN REPAIR. I CALLED ON THE 27,28,29,30,1,2,3, I SPOKE TO EVERY DEPARTEMT AND COLLECTIVELY SPENT 30 HOURS OF TIME(YES I WAS HING UP ON, SENT TO WORNG DPARTMENTS, PLACED ON HOLD FOREVER) TRYING TO TRACK MY COMPUTER AND THE PROBLEM. EVERY PERSON SAYS "I AM SORRY, I UNDERSTAND , ETC. THEY DO NOT. I NEEDED TO EITHER RETRIEVE THE INFO FROM THE HARDRIVE OR HAVE IT REPAIRED BEFORE I LEAVE FOR EUROPE IN 2 DAYS FOR A POWER POINT PRESENTATON THAT TOOK 6 MONTHS TO PREPARE AND NO BACK UP. FINALLY I WAS TOLD THE ADAPTER PORT WAS BROKEN AND THE COMPUTER BOARD BURNT OUT AND TO GIVE THEM 950.00 TO FIX A COMPUTER I DID NOT DROP, TAMPER WITH OR BREAK. i USED THE POWER CORD THEY GAVE ME AND CANNOT UNDERSTAND HOW THEY CAN CHARGE ME FOR A COMPUTER THAT IS NEW-WITHOUT A SCRATCH AND UNDER THE WARRANTY THEY SOLD ME. WHY DID I BUY A WARRRANTY?. SHAME ON IBM AND LENOVO. 950.00 . SHAME ON YOU OVER AND OVER.
I SPOKE TO EVERY DEPARTMENT AND THEY KNOW NOTHING EXCEPT HOW TO TRANSFER ME FROM ONE DEPARTMENT TO ANOTHER DEPT. ONE  MAN TOLD ME THE COMPUTER IS UNDER WARRANTY AND HE WOULD HAVE IT FIXED AND THEN TRANSFERED ME TO A MANAGER TO REVIEW ALL HE CONFIRMED. . AGAIN I WAS SENT TO TECH SUPPORT AND THEN SALES AND THEN WARRANTY AND BACK AGAIN. THERE IS NO MANAGER, JUST PEOPLE THAT PASS THE BUCK AROUND WITHOUT RESPONSIBILITY. i WROTE EACH PERSONS NAME DOWN -AND THE LIST IS LONG. i DID SPEAK TO THE WARRANTY DEPT AND I WAS TOLD I COULD NOT GET THE RIGHT WARRANTY AS THE MACHINE IS MORE THAN 90 DAYS OLD AND NOW IN REPAIR. . LENOVO KNOWS ONE THING- CHARGE THE CUSTOMER AND THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT WHAT THEY DID WRONG OR THAT THE MACHOINE I RECIEVED WAS FAUTLY. I AM TO BLAME AND HELD HOSTAGE FOR 950.00. I FINALLY SPOKE TO A WOMAN WHO SAID SHE WOULD SEND MY CASE TO  A MANAGER  TO ESCALTE. SHE WAS CONDESCENDING AND HORRIBLE. I EXPLAINED THE PROBLEM AND TIMING AND SHE IS SORRY AND SHE UNDERSTANDS- BUT I DO NOT THINK ANYONE UNDERSTANDS THE WORDS THEY ARE SPEWING. IF THEY UNDERSTOOD- WHY IS IT GOING TO TAKE 3-5 MORE DAYS TO GET THE CASE TO ESCALATE.I WILL LEAVE ON A TRIP WITHOUT MY WORK AND ONE OF THESE DAYS -SOMEONE TILL WAKE UP AND JUST START THE WHOLE PROCESS OVER AND ASK ME THE PROBLEM AND DEMAND THE 950.00.  WAKE UP IBM AND LENOVO AND KNOW I WILL DO ANYTHING I CAN TO DISCOURAGE MY COMPANIES AND ANYONE I AM ASSOCIATED WITH TO NOT CONSIDER IBM PRODUCTS.YOUR CUSTOMER CARE IS HORRIBLE. YOUR SYSTEMS AND TRAINING OF PERSONAL IS TERRIBLE. i WANT MY COMPUTER BACK, FIXED AND NO CHARGE AND ACCEPTED AS IT WAS UNDER THE WARRANTY I BOUGHT. iF THERE IS AN EXTRA PRO THNKPAD WARRANTY I NEED TO BUY- I AM MORE THAN HAPPY TO DO SO. i AM POSTING THIS BLOG ON ALL MY COMPANIES WEBSITES INCLUDING FACEBOOK, TWITTER ,LINKED IN -GLOBALLY. PERHAPS I WILL DO SOME GOOD IN WARNING ANYONE THAT WAS THINKING OF IBM PRODUCTS TO NOT BUY THEM

    Dave,
Sorry to hear about your troubles - I can only imagine your frustration and the time crunch.
The best approach is to ask that your case be escalated to customer relations - this will usually take 24-48 hours and it sounds like that may be already in the works.   Customer relations should be able to work with service and depending on the circumstances have the system repaired under your exisiting standard warranty terms.
A standard or extended warranty should be enough in most instances - the accidental damage upgrade is really to cover drops, spills, physically broken parts - cracked LCDs, hinges, etc.   These types of damages are often rulled as "customer induced" and not covered under normal warranty which results in a billable ammount quoted for the repair.
Service applies their best judgement on these, but we recognize that circumstances can vary and so there is an escalation and review process to make sure we can intercede and help customers as appropriate given the particulars of the case.
    Best regards,

  • Is there a way to only use external monitor and have the MBP open to keep it cool?

I'd like to be able to just use an external monitor with my MBP due to space limitations, However, when I close the lid on my MBP, it overheats and the fans go crazy, making a terrible racket without cooling the machine :/.
The Screen preferences do not cater for this setup in any way.

Have you tried placing the Mac on a stand? There are even models with fans for greater cooling effect.
AFAIK, there is no air movement thru the keyboard or speaker grilles as the fans do their stuff thru the slot below the lid hinge. Maybe taking one of those "compressed air duster" cans and blasting away on the area may help; every time I've done so on mine a mini desert storm of dust has come out.
What you're trying to use is Clamshell Mode. See if this helps any: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3131

  • HT202663 wifi no hardware installed

    wifi no hardware installed

So I got the dreaded WiFi not installed message today. Recently been getting WiFi problems on my MBP13"-1278model. Started with WiFi timeouts. Messing around with terminal, upgrading to mavericks and resetting pram got me back my WiFi but only within 5metres from router. Just bought a Bluetooth, isight and WiFi aerial part. While replacing I noticed my old WiFi aerial (see ifixit guides) were damaged evidently from opening and closing for 3 years. I successfully replaced part and now the aforementioned sentance of death! I think it unlikely I replugged connections in wrong areas- as connections were different lengths and it is easy to see where which one goes. Maybe I Buggered the WiFi/ motherboard by doing this? Any ideas? I'm prob going to have buy a new one 3 years of constant and faithful use-definitely longest lappie life I have had! But definite design flaw- very obvious when you change part how vulnerable cables are to long-term wear and tear near lid hinges....
