TS3173 If I install win 7 on a new Mac mini, do I need to install video drivers as well?

See above

You need to install the entire Windows Support Software Package that you downloaded using Boot Camp in step 1.

Normally Microsft allows the installation of their programs, except Operating Systems, to be installed on a desktop and notebook at the same time as long as both system are used exclusively by the same person and Not at the same time.
So this should also be true for MS Office for Mac. The only way to tell is to install it on the Mini and then use the same key to activate it. If the activation goes through you are fine. But if you run both system at the same time do not open any of the Office programs on both system at the same time. That may trigger MS to disallow one of the activations.
MS Office for both Mac and Windows checks the local network and logs into the MS activation site everytime one of the apps is started to check current activation and to check if you have it running on more then one computer on your local network using the same key.

  • New MAC Mini w/OSX Lion - will not boot from USB or external optical drive when attempting to use BootCamp to install Windows 7?

The University recently purchased 6 brand new MAC minis for deployment in classrooms I support.  I am attempting to create a dualk--boot environment comparable to our existing computer systems, only these machines wil be running MAC OS X Lion and Windows 7.  After following the procedures outlined in the BootCamp on-screen prompts, and attempting a few techniques I found in the tech support user-base, I am still unable to get the MAC mini to boot up from the USB flash drive, or from an external optical drive, so that I can complete the installation of Windows 7.  When using the Boot option key at start-up, all devices are displayed suggesting that they are being properly recognized, however the computer boots to a black screen with an error message indicating that "No bootable devices are  found - press any key to continue." I am able to boot into the computer's internal drive, but not from any external devices.  I fully expected that the semi-automated BootCamp procedure properly prepares the USB device for booting, and for installing the Windows 7 OS.

Meh, with the price they take for a drive in Denmark, I don't think it's worth it... They take around 160 $ for the drive (that's the cheapest MacBook drive I could find), and I am not even sure that's the one I need.

  • How do I install Windows on a new Mac Mini (w/o optical drive?)

The new Mac Mini does not have an optical drive and I would like to install Windows with Parallels Desktop 6
Any ideas?  Can I put the iso on a USB drive or mount a NAS?
    Thanks for ay help!
    Enzo

You can burn an ISO of a bootable disc back to a DVD, but not to a USB device. I don't know if Parallels is able to install from an ISO, but it may install from an external drive. This is why you should read the documentation for Parallels or ask at their tech support site.

  • Got Lion with new Mac mini and want to install on imac

    Hi,
I just bought a new mac mini with lion. and now i want to install Lion on my imac.
Is there a way to register my purchase of lion on appstore so i can download it from there?
    //Stefan

You'll have to pay for the App Store version of Lion needed for the iMac.  The license for Lion  that you get  with a new computer is different from the App Store license, and doesn't provide for multiple installations.
From the Lion Software License Agreement, which you can download from here:
    http://www.apple.com/legal/sla
    2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
    A. Standard and Preinstalled Apple Software License. Subject to the terms and conditions of this License, unless you obtained the Apple Software from the Mac App Store or under a volume license, maintenance or other written agreement from Apple, you are granted a limited, non-exclusive license to install, use and run one (1) copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-branded computer at any one time. For example, these standard single-copy license terms apply to you if you obtained the Apple Software preinstalled on Apple- branded hardware.
    B. License from Mac App Store. If you obtained a license for the Apple Software from the Mac App Store, then subject to the terms and conditions of this License and as permitted by the Mac App Store Usage Rules set forth in the App Store Terms and Conditions (http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/ww/) (“Usage Rules”), you are granted a limited, non-transferable, non-exclusive license:
    to download, install, use and run for personal, non-commercial use, one (1) copy of the Apple Software directly on each Apple-branded computer running Mac OS X Snow Leopard or Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server (“Mac Computer”) that you own or control;

  • I have a new MAC MINI and I want to install a second monitor.  I have one connected to the HDMI and it works.  I can't get a signal to the other one.  It is connected from the thunderbolt to its HDMI port.  How can I make it work?

I have a new MAC MINI and I want to install a second monitor.  I have one connected to the HDMI and it works.  I can't get a signal to the other one.  It is connected from the thunderbolt to its HDMI port.  How can I make it work?

Could be a bad cable or bad Thunderbolt port.
You have 90 days of free telephone support on a new device. You can call them at 1-800-MY-APPLE. Have your Mini's serial number handy
You can also make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • Can I not install Final Cut Studio 2 on my new Mac Mini?

I just purchased a new Mac Mini - it's time to retire my G5 Power Mac.
FCS 2.0 is unverisal - so why can I not loan the software..???

I am having a major problem, I have an old mac purchased 7 years ago and my hard drive got problems but is still working, I got a new mac having OS X system, I have final cut pro 6 and I installed it on the new os X but it didn't work, I also used the conversion method mentioned on the net in order to work on final cut pro x because final cut pro 6 is not supported on OS X, with the conversion the final cut pro X was only able to read the original tapes but was not able to read the edited material, am really stuck and I need help, can someone recommend a helpful solution? when i went to mac technical support office they said that for old macs we can only offer to change the hard drive and RAM and replacing the old hard drive for OS with a new hard drive does not gaurantee that final cut pro 6 will work also, and if something later on doesn't work in the old mac OS we can not fix it or replace it because apple does not provide any other spare parts besides the RAM and hard drive.

  • I cannot install Lion to a backup drive for my new Mac Mini

I just bought the new Mac Mini with an i7 processor last week. I wanted to format a backup drive for it. When I tried to use the Lion Recovery partition on the new Mac Mini, I keep getting an error message that says it's incompatoble with the current model.
I also tried to use the Lion thumbdrive I purchased from Apple to see if that can be used, but it also give me the incompatible message.
Is there a special version of Lion that's only for the new Mac Mini's?
    Any help is appreciated!

Mac mini (Mid 2011), MacBook Air (Mid 2011): Use Lion Recovery instead of OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive
    Last Modified: September 01, 2011
    Article: HT4905
    Summary
Learn about using Lion Recovery or the built-in OS X Lion recovery partition rather than OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive with computers released after OS X Lion.
    Products Affected
MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2011), MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2011), MacBook Air (Mid 2011), Mac mini (Mid 2011)
Use Lion Recovery to restore Mac computers released after OS X Lion. If you attempt to use the OS X Lion USB Thumb Drive, a message will appear stating that you cannot install this version of OS X on your computer. This is correct behavior to make sure you install only the correct and most up-to-date version of Mac OS X on your computer.
Note: You can also use the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant on your Mac to create a bootable image to make sure you recover the correct version of OS X Lion. To use the Lion Recovery Disk Assistant, you need to have your own USB drive.
    Additional Information
If you have a network connection, you should receive the appropriate version of Mac OS X when using the built-in Recovery HD partition on Macs running Lion.

  • How to install windows xp on bootcamp on new Mac mini?

How can i install windows xp on bootcamp on new Mac mini?
I know that i should get an external usb optical drive, but buying such hardware for one use is a waste of money. Is there any other method?
I currently own a MacBook white, and really like the configuration. I it possible to copy the image of bootcamp to new mac mini? If so, what will happen to hardware and drivers?

    Let me get this right:
1- copy the exact image of the winxp installation dc to USB
2- start bootcamp assistant, go through everything, till rebooting
3- boot from USB (hold ALT and select the USB volume)
4- go through winxp setup and done!
    Am I missing anything?
I think that USB would be readable only on Mac os or winxp, but will the winxp installer read from USB?
    Correct me if wrong.
Having read further websites, I am now a bit more dubious you can do this, at least with an XP installer.
However if you have a USB memory stick and an existing Windows computer (even a Boot Camp one) or can borrow one you could try using the free WinToFlash utility to make a supposedly bootable USB memory stick of the installer. See http://wintoflash.com/overview/en/
The problem is XP predates EFI firmare and XP only really knows BIOS firmware. As such (supposedly) XP would have problems booting from a USB device fully - it might lose connection part way through. Windows Vista and 7 do support EFI firmware.
The other approach I mentioned of temporarily moving the hard disk from the Mini to the MacBook so you can use the MacBook internal CD/DVD drive would work - be careful of the cables. Fortunately a new Mac mini and an old MacBook are two of the easier models to get at the hard disk. See http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook-Core-2-Duo-Hard-Drive-Replacement/514/1 (they also list other MacBook models) and http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Installing-Mac-Mini-Mid-2011-Hard-Drive-Replacement/ 6422/1
Regardless of which method you try, the first step would be on the Mac mini to run Boot Camp Assistant and to create the partition for Windows. Then via either method try booting from a Windows XP installer.
As I have taken Macs apart many times, I personally might go the swapping the hard disk over route.

  • Want to purchase new mac mini but I do not know how I would install programs from dvd without internal optical drive

I am planning to purchase new mac mini that just came out today but I do not know how I will be able to install programs or save stuff to disk when there is now internal optical drive.  I know I could purchase an external drive but is that necesary. Thanks.

If you have access to another Mac with an DVD drive you should be able to share it using Apple's drive sharing feature in the OS or at the very least if you have a firewire cable boot into firewire disk mode...

  • Can I install Windows XP SP1 with Bootcamp on my new Mac Mini 2011 i7 ?

Can I install Windows XP SP1 with Bootcamp on my new Mac Mini 2011 i7 ?

Baiscally if your Mini came with Lion Pre-installed new then No you can't use XP.
The Lion installed computers no longer support XP OR Vista via Apple's Boot Camp.
For one thing Apple only supported XP with SP2 in order to install it on pre Lion computers.
If the Mini had come pre-installed new with say 10.6 then you could have installed XP and still of been able to upgrade to Lion without any issues as you already have the drivers for XP installed. Lion only has the drivers for W7.

  • New mac mini server: Install OS on older Mac Mini?

I have an UBUNTU server running on the network and was thinking of replacing it with the new Mac Mini Server edition. I also have an older (2009 - intel) Mac Mini.
I was wondering if I could install the OS X Server OS that comes with the NEW mini on the OLDER Mac Mini and reformat the newer server as a "normal" workstation.
I can deal with the optical drive issue. I'm just wondering if the OS X Server software is tied to the newer hardware in any way.
I'd be saving about $300 this way - not a big deal but still worth it. The "traditional" way would be to buy an new Mac mini as a workstation and a copy of Mac OS X Server for the older Mac Mini

No. That OS can only be installed on the Mac model it shipped with.
