How would we know? Call your carrier and ask. They're the ones locking it. They'd be the ones to unlock it.

I could help you better if you had an idea of the equipment you will be controlling or reading to/from. Are you planning to totally customize a system or are you looking to use instruments/controllers already available for Home Automation? Im not sure I understand what you really need. Here's an Idea. Then LV could communicate, (for example using X10 or other protocol), commands to the device actually controlling the lights. Lighting device could be controlled using some sort of communications like, X10, Serial, IR, RF, Ethernet, etc... So this system can turn lights
on/off/dim% either at the click of a button on your screen or a timer. Adding any other system in the house will more than likely require a different communication protocol and complicates things even further. You could much of this with regular automation hardware from NI but this requires integrating different components like relays, dimmers, etc.. Much more work and more expensive, (I would think), than buying a device made specifically for the system.

Thanks in advance.The iPhone bought unlocked from the Apple store in the US will work in Brazil on GSM. Nevertheless the LTE frequencies might be different.
Be aware that:
You will NOT be able to order from the US Apple online store. You will have to go to a physical Apple store in the US.
The warranty is only valid in the US and you will not be able to get warranty service in Brazil.
With all of that, why not buy the iPhone in Brazil? -

First you'd have to establish service with Verizon. Once a paying customer in good standing, you can then request the GSM portion be unlocked. Obviously, you can't do any of that stuff while you're out of the US. They will not unlock the CDMA side.

Only the carrier to whom the device is locked can unlock it.
If you do not meet their requirements or they do not offer unlocking there is no official way to unlock the device.

System Preferences > Language and Text > Input Sources tab. Top of the left column, tick (check) "Keyboard and Character Viewer", Bottom of window next to search field, tick "Show input menu in menu bar"
Enable Portuguese keyboard layout.
System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard tab; tick "show keyboard and character viewers in menu bar"
If you open Keyboard Viewer and press the alt (option) key, the location of the diacritics will be revealed. Note that five of them are highlighted in orange; these are the ones which can be used with multiple letters (acute, umlaut, gràve, circumflex and tilde)
Shift+Alt will show more.
If you want to use the Portuguese layout, go to the flag symbol in the menu bar and change the keyboard in the dropdown, then use Keyboard viewer again to see where the characters are in relation to your own keyboard. -

Apple will not take it as a trade-in for an upgrade to an iPad touch
The will take it for recycle only
Your best bet is to sell it on your own and then use those funds to get the new iPod.

As long as you purchase the GSM (AT&T) version, not the Verizon version, it will not be carrier-locked.

They may not accept iPhones from outside the US.
The trade-in program requires the device to be fully functional.
