I am not able to turn the volume up or down, it does have volume when testing ring tones, any body have ideas what it could be?

Have you tried the standard fixes:
- Reset:
Reset iPod touch: Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Restore the iPod from backup via iTunes
- Restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPod.
If still problem you likely have a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genus Bar of an Apple store is in order.

yes, you can locate and copy a file from your HD to a USB key using UNIX commands. If you know the exact name of the file which you’re trying to locate, try this:
find / -iname filename -print
This command will search your entire internal disk for the particular filename. If you know that it’s within a particular user account, then you can save search time with this variation:
find /Users/username -iname filename -print
Either variation of this command will print all files found which have the given filename. Presuming that you’re able to identify the correct file, you can copy it to a USB key using the command
cp -p filename_returned_by_find /Volumes/USB_volume
If you’re not sure which volume name your USB key has, this command will show you what the possibilities are:
ls /Volumes

I have lost the password and the DVD is not working on my old mac G4 500mhz, how can I get back my password?

I have lost my password and the DVD is not working on my old mac desktop G4 500mhz. I have tried use the boot up disk to change the admin password. But the DVD did not work. ( I did not touch this machine for years.) But i need retreive something , so I have tried the shell script in the terminal
1. fsck-y and the mount-uw to try to change and find the service directory's plist to change the password. But after I get the mount -uw, it show illegal option message.
What I can do now to solve this problem? in shell script or any other way?

Hi,
A DVD drive that is not working after many years not used:
most probably dust on the little laser lens.
Take the drive out and if you can reach this lens: clean it with pure alcohol on Q-Tip.
Many people throw away cd or dvd players all the time because they stopped working, and very often it can easily be fixed by cleaning this lens.
I used to have a G5, where I couldn't access that lens. It was very sensitive to dust.
I have fixed it several times with compressed air. One time I didn't have canned air, but a bikepump did the trick.
If you have another mac, I'd try to access the G4 internal disk with firewire target disk mode.

I can hold the option key at start up and choose my network, then Internet recovery shows up with an arrow pointing up. When I click on the arrow Internet recovery fails and all I get is a globe with a triangle on it with an exclamation mark on it, and under that it says

I had the same error. And i had a Computer that had worked, with a SSD drive and 16GB upgrade done by the owner himself.
I tried swapping with a Mechinal Harddrive, no luck.
Kept the Mechanical drive in, and tried with some other Ram, it worked..
So for me this error and after reading the other responses can be boiled down to a Harddrive problem or Ram issue.
It was Ram for me..

I recently downloaded the new Firefox (Firefox 4, I think - you can tell I'm very tech savvy!) and it constantly freezes, I can't do anything with it at all - I can't even close it from the icon in my Mac dock bar.
I have tried restarting my computer - though I have to turn it off by using the power button as as Firefox is open and totally unresponsive it won't let me shut down. About a minute after re-starting Firefox, restoring my tabs or starting afresh, it freezes again.
This is obviously very annoying and I'm not sure what I can do about it. Firefox is my preferred browser, and I'd really like to be able to use it again!

This is not a reply. I just want to elaborate on this problem.
My computer freezes occasionally when it is used after being sleep for a while. The spinning ball appears and everything is totally disabled. Nothing on the keyboard works.
The mouse moves, but does not work.
The only solution is to turn the power off and on (losing all data in open applications.)
I kept the System monitor running on the side to find out which program was running when the computer froze. The Monitor as well as all other applications froze, but the data showed:
Firefox 18.4%
Activity Monitor 0.9%
Firefox Plugin 0.2%
This is all the information I have. By the way, I am using iMac with OS 10.6.

I have tried restartingy phone, I have done rewet as well.
even after all this, the problem still exist.
restarting the phone does solve the problem, but thats temporarily only. On an average, I have to restart my phone 2-3 times a day.
also many a times, it doesn't shows the name of the person whenever somebody calls, although the number is already saved. I have many friends in my surrounding with same handset, but home of them is facing such a problem.
my phone isn't even a month old, and is troubling me a lot. Want to get it rectifoed asap else i'll filing for a replacement.

The fact you have not mentioned the actual model of phone you have is somewhat irrelevant, because if you have had the handset for less than a month it will still be in warranty and depending on where you are based could also be within an exchange period. I would suggest returning it to whoever supplied it and getting it repaired/replaced. It should be done at no cost to you as your warranty will cover it.

Have you tried restarting or resetting your iPad?
Restart: Press On/Off button until theÂ Slide to Power Off slider appears, select Slide to Power Off and, after the iPad shuts down, then press the On/Off button until the Apple logo appears.
Reset: Press the Home and On/Off buttons at the same time and hold them until the Apple logo appears (about 10 seconds).

hi, i recently bought my phone less than a motnth ago and ive never used my phone to call or pick up without my headphones because i like using it hands free and now the first time i ever did on this phone the mic is messed up and giving out weird sounds that people cant hear me or anything but with my headphones it perfect..i dont know what to do can someone help do you think i can have it replaced? i never dropped it or anything its always been in a case ever since i got this phone.

You can take it to an Apple Store and will be checked and if faulty will be replaced under warranty or if out of warranty can be replaced at a fixed price

My nephew's iPad volume will not work? Any clue why?

My nephew was messing with the "find my ipad" service, ended up erasing everything. i backed it up and now the volume will not work, not with the side button or even give it as an option on the music. I've checked the volume setting, the speaker work fine. I checked if he muted it some how but i can't figure out why sound won't play.

You backup but do you backup with iTunes? If you do and you have an older backup... One that existed before you erased the device.... You can try restoring from that backup. Restoring from a backup restores the previous app preferences and settings to the iPad. If you decide to try this, turn off auto sync first so that you don't inadvertently overwrite the backup.
Launch iTunes on your computer and go to Edit>Preferences>Devices, check the box at the bottom that says "Prevent iPods, iPhones and iPads from syncing automatically. You can also check in that window to see if you have any backups that predate the problem - the wiping of the iPad. if you do have a backup - Click OK. Quit iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer with the cable and launch iTunes, right click on the iPad name under devices and select Restore From Backup. Select that backup from the menu (in case you have additional or multiple backups) and restore from it. Sync with iTunes after you restore from the backup.

Is it the same if you try without the Back cover ? If it works fine without it then put the cover back properly and check again..
Else, you may try a soft reset : Press Power + Volume(down) keys until the phone vibrates (about 8-10 seconds).
