SMTP is the protocol used to send mail, where IMAP and POP are the protocols used to receive mail. ISPs can have different servers for these protocols.
In this case, the specified receiving (IMAP or POP) server, or the receiving user and password credentials, are likely incorrect.
What does the Connection Doctor diagnostic tool report?
Mail.app's Window menu > Connection Doctor
To check or change the settings, select Mail.app's Mail menu > Preferences... > Accounts and select the account you need to edit in the left column.
The receiving information will be displayed for the selected Account, with either POP or IMAP shown. Confirm with the ISP that your POP or IMAP mail settings are correct per the ISP's recommendations, as well. And in general, IMAP is preferable to POP, if you have the option of using either of those with your ISP.

i can receive mail on my ipod touch and through the icloud web site, BUt I cannot receive mail on my mac directly any more. There is an exclamation point on my mail in box and also an ! on .mac.
Can anyone help me with settings so I can receive mail again directly on my mac?

Sales rep in store pulled up the map and told me "Yes you are totally in a 4G service area." I knew I already had great connectivity thru my Jetpack but wanted the Home Fusion for at home. Installation was quick and easy, the installer was polite and courteous but did not tell me I had to purchase the insurance on the device less be responsible for any charges that occur if a tech has to come out and service it. Well, it worked for about 2 weeks and we had some storms roll thru our area and that was the end of my internet. After two painful calls to technical support and 2 trouble tickets submitted with no results I was very frustrated and upset. I felt that I had no other option but to have the tech come out and "fix" or "swap out" the antenna. Now keep in mind that there was no physical damage to the Home Fusion Antenna or Router, so I couldn't understand why the Home Fusion wouldn't work. Turns out the tech that came out to my house told me flat out that it shouldn't have ever been installed. The original tech I recall his name being Eddie, should have told me that the signal for the 4G Home Fusion was very weak and that the area that I am in is not quite a 4G Home Fusion area, it's on the brink and probably will be soon but for now it's shotty at best. However, I had to hear this from the tech that came out to replace the antenna, the antenna that there was nothing wrong with(per Levi). If the original tech Eddie would have leveled with me I would have opted to add the service later when we were completely in the coverage area. I still would have ordered the service, I would have continued to be a happy customer. Levi Bishop is the name of the second tech that came out to the house. He was very honest with me that Verizon was having a lot of issues with techs installing the equipment when they really shouldn't because of this issue, that Eddie is no longer with Verizon because of this.
I am at a loss because I do not feel that I should have been billed for a tech to come out to tell me the 4G isn't up and running quite yet for my area. I feel like I was taken advantage since your technicians are the ones who have this information at the time of install yet they don't share this very important piece of information with us and just do the install because that's what they are paid to do.Jloe,
As I have posted before, You, and others having issues with Verizon would be much better off if you complained to the FCC and FTC as well as your Senators and Congressmen. We, as individuals, have such small voices - use them where they might do the most good.
Also, don't assume that Verizon doesn't monitor these postings, they actively do & sometimes contact those that post complaints.

Did you check the USB cable or try another one?
Did you check the docking port for any kind of debris or lint?
Did you already try to reset your device by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes back again? -

YOu would have to set it up as an IMAP account, which would depend on what email service you are using.

Not easily, no. The better solution would be to put a passcode on the phone.

I cannot receive mail after i sent a large photo. A new folder appeared called "recovered messages" with the over 100 recovered emails of the same email of the one i sent out. i have read apple support and done everything they suggest. Help!

I would like to use my work exchange email on my macbook pro. But I cannot install it. I have no problem my work email on my iPhone or iPad. My work IT person does not know what is wrong. Why I try to set up the email I get the message that it cannot connect to this server.
Try going into System Prefereces then Mail, Cintacts & Calendars then click on the Microsoft Exchange link on the right. Type in your email address and password and allow it to set it up automatically.
Make sure your Mac is updated to the newest version of Mail.
If that still fails then I suggest you switch email clients. I don't care for the built in mail program. IMHO it is very buggy. -
How do I email everyone I have ever emailed to warn them about a spam message I received and *stoopidly* opened! I don't want to add them separately to an email - there are hundreds. I would like to do it one foul swoop. Thanks in advance of any pears of wisdom x
You probably don't want to do this. At least not as described.
Think about it. You're talking of sending an email to every individual that you've ever emailed, every mailing list you've ever posted to, and more ... and to tell them, what? that you opened an email. Big deal.
I suspect that >95% of the people won't care. The rest will recognize it for what it was - a momentary lapse of judgement, for which you're now broadcasting to a wider audience.
Seriously, millions of people open spam messages every hour. Think of the mess that email would be if every opened spam message generated a few hundred "oops, I'm sorry, I opened a spam message" additional messages to everyone's contacts.
Unless you have specific reason to believe that they will somehow be affected by your opening of the email, you're just going to make yourself look even sillier.
If you do fear that your opening of this message is going to somehow affect them (in ways i can't imagine) then your first action is to determine a list of people that you want to notify (I'm sure "everyone" is not appropriate). You could write a script to extract the recipient of every message in your Sent folder (or, even better, every selected message, so you can pre-filter the list), but I still question its value.
The following AppleScript will extract a unique list of email addresses from the selected messages in Mail.app - select the messages, then run the script and you'll have a list of addresses. Again, I can't stress how much I think you shouldn't bother running this, but it demonstrates one option.

Just bought Samsung S22B310B computer monitor and hooked it up to my mac mini. I have my mac set to the 1920X1080 resolution but the entire screen (21.5") is not filled. How do fill the screen? it fills the screen on other resolution settings. I have it hooked up regularly and not to the DVI hook up. I'm not a computer savvy person please help!
That monitor supports both (digital) DVI and (analog) VGA connections, so you should not need a converter or use a different adapter.
You should use the Apple Supplied HDMI to DVI Adapter and a (digital) DVI cable to the monitor. -
I have multiple emails associated with my i phone, but can't get my mac to associate some of the email names because it is associated with other apple id , but it's my id. how can i get around this?

- The next standard thing to do is to download/install a new app but you cant 'do that.
