TS3355 imovie 11 doesn't load iphoto videos

I have OSX v 10.8.3, imovie 11 v9.0.8 and iphoto 11 v9.4.3 - imovie doesn't load iPhotos into its library.  Any suggestions?

It might help to trash the iApps preferences file. See this post and read it carefully for the details.

  • IMovie 11 does not see iPhoto videos

Using iLife 09, iMovie showed my iPhoto videos in the lower pane event browser.
    Upgraded to iLife 11.
iPhoto spent some time converting my library - but it completed; and seems fine.
iMovie, however, no longer shows the iPhoto videos. The text says no video clips match the current selection - but this never changes no matter what is selected.
My previous iMovie projects all still exist; and seem fine. The videos that were added from the event browser in '09 are also still fine within those projects.
I'd appreciate any suggestions for fixing this.

As I always have my preference set to copy items to the iPhoto Library, hopefully I won't see any problems. Once I'm running with iLife '11 (hopefully some time on Monday) I will let you know how things go.
Neville, just to let you know (as promised), everything went very smoothly with my iLife '11 upgrade. All my iPhoto videos showed up in iMovie '11 within the item "iPhoto Videos" in the Events Library. But, as I mentioned earlier, my preferences are set to copy photos to the iPhoto Library.
After installing iLife '11, my first step was to open iPhoto and allow the database to update. Once I was satisfied that iPhoto was running OK, I then opened iMovie and waited for it to do all the upgrading. That went smoothly also, other than a warning about a Centred Title missing from one of my iPhoto Videos and that the video wouldn't play without it. I haven't bothered to track that down yet - the video wasn't identified in the warning message.
I appreciate this doesn't really help you solve your issue, but it does help to confirm that things seem to work OK when the iPhoto preference is set to the option I've selected (copy photos). Note that my iPhoto Library is located on the internal drive. I have a small number of photos that I keep in separate folders outside of the iPhoto Library - mainly stuff I've done for other people that I don't want cluttering up iPhoto (although I realise that these can be hidden in iPhoto).

  • IMovie crashes when clicking on iPhoto Videos

    Hi,
I'm experiencing a really frustrating error with iMovie.  Basically when I click on the iPhoto Videos option in the events library iMovie crashes.  I've got a number of iPhoto libraries and this is happening when any of them that contain movies are set to be the default library.  When I choose an iPhoto library that doesn't contain any movies then iMovie will go to this event fine and say that there aren't any movies.
I'm really stuck as I can't see a way to get around this and see my iPhoto movies in iMovie, which I really need to do for the project I'm working on.  A lot of clips that I want to use have been taken on my iPhone, so they automatically end up in iPhoto.
Has anyone else had a similar experience or know of a way to solve this.?
    Thanks
ps: I'm using the latest versions of iMovie and iPhoto.

There might be a workaround, maybe not a way to solve it outright. One thing I've recommended to folks in the past is to do a Library Rebuild when the videos don't show up from a particular iPhoto Library. That's the ⌘ Command Key + Option Key then double-click iPhoto to open the Repair Interface. It may not be necessary to select all the options listed on the Rebuild check list. But I'm not familiar enough with the differences between all the options. So I just let people check all the options and let it run until it's finished. Quit iPhoto then go back to iMovie and see if it will display the iPhoto Videos.
Failing that, go back to iPhoto. Create a Smart Folder:
Go to File Menu > New Smart Album... > Type in a name for the label of the smart album (I chose movies) then in the first column, choose Keyword, second column, choose contains, then lastly type in the word "Movie" with a capital letter M just to be safe. Then click OK, this Album essentially does a search of all your iPhoto Library and shows the results to you as if they were an actual album inside of iPhoto. From there you can see what videos might be located in your iPhoto Library and export them. Or <CTRL> + click and choose Reveal in Finder drag them to the Desktop and import them into the iMovie Events Folder.

  • Loading "iPhoto Videos" takes forever

When I started iMovie '11 for the first time, it spent 12 hours or so finding the videos in my iPhoto library and then generating the thumbnails. I have a hundred or so .AVIs in there shot with my Canon ELPH. When I quit iMovie or just navigate away from the event "iPhoto Videos" and then back, it again takes hours for the video thumbnails to display. Once they are displayed, I can zip through them (though there is no sound when I scrub through - not sure if this is a bug or not). But in any case, it takes a long time (hours) to load these up every time. Am I doing something wrong?

In general, it may take a long time to generate iPhoto movie thumbnails the first time you run it. Let it run overnight or when you will not be at the computer. After that, when it offers to create iPhoto thumbnails, it should take a couple of seconds as it checks for any recently added movies. It should spend no time creating thumbnails for movies it has already processed.
If iMovie is spending a lot of time generating thumbnails for iPhoto movies that have already been processed, you need to explore whether the thumbnails are getting stored properly after they are finished. Typically, this could be either a permissions problem (most likely) or a failing hard drive (more rare.) My first step would be to repair permissions using disk utility.

  • IMovie '08 not displaying my iPhoto videos

For some or other reason iMovie '08 does not display my iPhoto videos. Even when I do a seperate import using the file import feature and browse my iPhoto video library, do I still not end up with a selection of my imported iPhoto videos. What is causing this? I thought at first the movie files' format might not be compatible but using finder I can clearly see that the movies recorded from my Sony DSC-N1 camera are MPEG file formats. Shouldn't these files show up automatically in iMovie if they are in my iPhoto library?
I have created separate albums in iPhoto, making sure that the movies that ere in the events section are also in the corresponding album but still the movies do not show up in iMovie. This is extremely frustrating so I hope someone could help me with this one.
    Many thanks.

Shouldn't these files show up automatically in iMovie if they are in my iPhoto library?
No. The N1, like most Cyber-shot digital cameras by Sony, employs MPEG VX (MPEG-1) storage of video clips. MPEG-1 files are "playback only" QT supported. This means that they are neither "edit" compatible with iMovie '08 nor are they conversion compatible by the QT structure alone. (I.e., QT applications will drop the audio track if used to convert the clips.) In this case use any of the readily available MPEG-based, third-party applications available on line -- iSquint (free), MPEG Streamclip (free), FFmpegX (donation-ware), Visual Hub (pay-ware), etc. to convert these files to an iMovie '08 compatible compression format. Non-proprietary versions of DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, and H.264 compression format have all been found to be "edit" compatible with iMovie '08 as long as the file container does not contain "extraneous" tracks (e.g., a "Tween" track in the MOV file container). DO NOT IMPORT Apple Animation or Apple Video files. They will import and edit in an apparently normal fashion but will only export the audio with a "black" screen display.

  • IMovie not Showing recently imported iPhoto videos

Hello. I am trying to view FLIP videos I recently imported into iPhoto within the iMovie app. I can see a few from 2008 and 2009 but not the entire collection. I believe the iphoto videos iMovie is showing me came from a Sony Hard Drive camera. Any ideas? Any thoughts? Thanks.

I decided to import all the original AVIs and they worked OK (except one folder the thumbnails were all black so had to regenerate thumbnails and is OK now).
So assume there must have been a problem with some of the .mp4 files, even though I ran the conversion of all AVIs the same time with same settings.

  • After iLife 6 upgrade, iMove & iDVD doesn't recognize my video camera.

Since upgrading to iLife 6, iMovie and iDVD no longer recognizes my video camera. I have tried plugging, unplugging, turn off, turn on - all the usual procedures and I can't get it working.
Here's the unusual thing; I have Final Cut Pro 5.0.4 and it finds the video camera just fine every time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
My camera is a Sony HDR-HC1

I just tried my camera and wasn't successful at first. After connecting it (I didn't have the firewire connected at first , turning the camera on and off, disconnecting/connecting I noticed a choice (I was able to use the iSight) of input but had the camera listed as incompatible with the project. I had to close the test project I started and start a new one. This time I was more careful about the setting and selected it as a DV project.
    I hope this helps.

I have noticed the same phenomenon in safari -- i think since upgrading osx to 10.4.7.
But what I recently discovered is if I click and hold on the area where the flash content should be, it will bring up the settings menu and once I release, the flash content soon appears and it is playable.
That's what I usually have to do each time I visit a site, such as youtube or Veoh or the CW to watch the streaming broadcasts of Veronica Mars or One Tree Hill.
So, maybe you can try this hint and let me know if this works for you too.
And while we're at it a little rant is in order: Safari is truly crappy when it comes to alot of extras that should be there (such as using the built-in html editors in wordpress) or something like acid search which is really great or safari extender or taboo or cookie cutter or other built-in or add-on features that are availble for FREE in firefox & that are very valuable -- but when you try to add some of those little extras to safari (often they cost $$) Safari becomes even buggier, more unstable and slower than slow molasses. It is a less than ideal browser. Fine if you don't do much or expect much sure, then it's mediocre at best.
And like the horribly sluggish spotlight and finder (which DEvolved instead of Evolved) it needs some major improvements to be a real winner. Now, it's simply okay, unimpressive and underwhelming.

  • IMovie HD doesn't load themes on my new iMac running latest OSX Lion.

I just bought a new iMac (27inch 8GB) with the latest OSX Lion version.
On my previous computer an iMac (24inch 2007) with Snow Leopard, I had iMovie HD working well. I have installed it on my new iMac but the themes aren't loading for some reason... Not sure why not.
    Has anyone else experience this?
    Thanks

I've been having the same issue, but have just discovered something on my own that hasn't been pointed out in any of the forums I've visited.  In what I thought would be a vain attempt to help myself, I went to System Preferences, Users & Groups, and then clicked on Login Items.  I discovered that one of the Items that was listed to open automatically upon login was iTunes Helper and that there was an exclamation point beside it indicating that it was incompatible.  I simply deleted that item and now I don't have the situation you described and my wireless is connected.  Hope this helps!

  • IMovie 11 does not see all iPhoto videos

As many guys are having different problems, but none as mine, I'm creating this new topic.
I just bought a MacBook Pro, and it came with iLife 11. I copied my pictures/movies folder to the Pictures system folder and imported all to iPhoto (but first, I unchecked the "copy to iPhoto library" option).
Doing so, iMovie didn't show the movies. After searching a little, I deleted all the Events, checked the "copy to library" back and imported the files again.
Now, I can see the videos there, but not all. Most interesting is that almost all videos are MP4 H.264, and some appears, others don't (they came from the same camera). Some other MPG MPEG-1/2 aren't there too.
I didn't migrated from previous versions of iLife. I installed QuickTime 7. The "copy to iPhoto library" is checked. I don't know what to do!
    Thanks.

  • Most recently uploaded iphoto videos not showing up in imovie

when i try to use iphoto videos in my imovie project, the most recently uploaded videos do not show up.
this has happened to me before, and i got around the issue by importing the original video files (through finder) into imovie. the clips that weren't showing up eventually did show up, long after i needed them.
so, here i am again, trying to edit recently uploaded clips that aren't showing up. i tried closing iphoto and imovie, then opening them again. no luck. has anyone else had this probleml? why won't the most recently uploaded videos show up for days after they've been uploaded? i could import the files through finder, like i have in the past, but that takes up extra hard drive space, and takes way too long. i was under the impression that the ilife apps are supposed to just work with each other... intuitively and such
everything is up to date. here's my specs:
    MacBook Pro - 13-inch, mid 2010
    OS X 10.8.2 (12C60)
    iPhoto '11 - version 9.4.2 (710.42)
    iMovie '11 - version 9.0.8 (1778)
the videos were recorded on an iphone 5

Usually any videos in iPhoto appear in iMovie '09 in the item "iPhoto Videos" at the top of the listing in the iMovie Events browser. Clicking on this item (heading) reveals the video thumbnails to the right of the Events listing. However, I've noticed that my old 3gp videos from an earlier mobile phone don't show up in the Events, whereas some other formats do (for example, avi).
MPEG Streamclip will convert 3gp files to a suitable format for import to iMovie. I'm not sure if it will handle 3g2. In MPEG Streamclip, navigate to your movie and open it, or simply drag it into the workspace. Now export it as a QuickTime movie (.mov) in the format AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) or H.264. The default settings for these formats should be OK. Both these formats work well with iMovie. I just tested a 3gp movie, exported from MPEG Streamclip as AIC - this worked perfectly with iMovie.
To import in iMovie go to File>Import - Movies, then navigate to your movie.
You can download the free MPEG Streamclip here:

PS After posting this, I realised that you can also export as AIC or H.264 from QuickTime 7.6.6 (although I do have the pro version - not sure if you need that). In QT go to File>Export and select Movie to QuickTime Movie then choose Options and select the format.

  • IPhoto videos missing in iMovie 09's thumbnail view

Recently I imported a bunch of videos into iPhoto 09 from my camera, and when I next opened iMovie 09 it generated thumbnails for them as expected. But when it finished, only about a quarter of the videos were actually there in iMovie. They are all of the same format and everything and it is a random selection of them that for some reason didn't show up in iMovie. Since then I have added more videos to iPhoto in the hopes that when iMovie generated their thumbnails it would find the ones it missed but this didn't happen. All the new ones came through fine though. I've tried restarting iPhoto, iMovie and my computer but nothing worked. Does anyone know of a way to get iMovie to notice these files without having to make copies of them? (I tried the Import button which lets me find them through "Media" but I have to find each one individually and either copy it - which I would rather not do since the files are quite large - or move it, which means I could no longer open them through iPhoto). I also noticed that if I drag the video onto my desktop and re-add it to iPhoto then iMovie does notice it. The only problem with this is I have quite a large number of videos and to make copies of them all then delete them again, and have to find all the ones that are missing would be very tedious, but if nothing else works I will have to resort to this. Does anyone have any ideas or has experienced this before?
Thanks very much for your help

Unfortunately I think you have found all the possible fixes and they are all time consuming. It does sound like iPhoto isn't recognizing and allowing iMovie to then see the iPhoto Videos Library. A typical thing I suggest for folks with BIG iPhoto libraries is to do a iPhoto Library repair.
Hold down the ⌘ Command key + Option, then launch iPhoto. You'll get a dialog box with a number of check boxes. Not knowing exactly which of these is the one that will fix your problem, I say check them all and click OK and let 'er rip. This too will be time consuming as iPhoto reconstructs your whole catalog of photos and videos. If there's any damage it will correct that as well. Will it fix this problem of iMovie not seeing the iPhoto Videos, I don't know. You may also have to try deleting the iPhoto preferences .plist, but try the iPhoto Library rebuild first.

  • IPhoto videos seem to hang iMovie for 10-15 minutes

When I first launch iMovie and click into the iPhoto Videos in the Events Library the app hangs for around ten minutes. After that it seems to work normally. Non-iPhoto videos do not cause this problem. Any ideas?

Moretown got a few questions, which may help others identify your issue.
    *SYSTEM CONFIGURATION:*
_ Go to "System Profiler" and look at the "Hardware Overview: "
    1. Model Identifier?
    2. Processor Speed?
    3. Memory?
    *OS & APP VERSION:*
    4. What is your Mac OS Version and Build #?
    5. What Version and Build # of iMovie are you running?
    6. What Version and Build # of iPhoto are you running?
    CAMERA:
    7. What camera/s did you use to create your iPhoto videos? (Make / Model)?
    IPHOTO:
    8. What is the size of your _entire iPhoto Library_ ?
    9. How many videos in your iPhoto Library? *+(see steps below)+*
    10. What is the size of all your videos combined? *+(see steps below)+*
    +(Use the steps below for question #9 & #10)+
    _ Launch iPhoto
_ Select "Photos" from the Library
_ Go to "Edit > Find"
_ Type "movie" in the Search field
_ Click the "Information" button -- it looks like a blue ( i ) -- to show the info tab.

  • Does iMovie '08 store iPhoto videos somewhere?

I realize that my Camcorder Videos are downloaded to the Hard Drive (I've specified an external HD) but iMovie has also "imported" my iPhoto videos. On iPhoto I have my photos and videos taken with still cameras (can't really call them "still") - OK but with 2008-09 photos and videos only on my main iPhoto library, I have some 5000 photos and 513 videos.
I let iMovie "import" them - and now I'd like to DE-import them. I realize if I trash a video in iPhoto, then the next time I open iMovie, it is gone. But there must be a simpler way?
ALSO: Is iMovie taking-up additional HD space when it does this? It seems it is NOT duplicating the iPhoto videos-- since asking in iMovie to locate the original file takes me to my iPhoto file.
Any comments or references on how to better understand this (especially iMovie) appreciated!

iMovie does not move any of these videos. If you use them in a project, the project file will contain a link back to the location in the iPhoto library.
iMovie will use a small amount of space to hold the thumbnails that it created when you imported the videos. These don't take much space, and they enable the "skimming" feature in iMovie.
If you click on a different event (one from your camcorder), then the iPhoto videos will be reduced to one line item in your event list.
Sorry, I don't know how to turn off the iPhoto link. But I am sure that someone here does.
It sounds like you have already gone through the painful part (the initial thumbnail creation). If you add more still camera videos in the future, it will quickly create the thumbnails.
