TS3355 iMovie11 Event Library no longer displays thumbnails

iMovie11 event library no longer displays thumbnails to enable editing.  Only entire clips are dispayed as 1 frame. Suggestions?

I would suggest trashing your Preferences files. It may fix it, and if it doesn't work, it wont hurt anything.

  • DNG files created with LR4 no longer display thumbnails w/ FastPictureViewer & Win7

I've been using the FastPictureViewer Codec pack so that DNG and camera RAW files show as thumbnails in Explorer for quite some time. Upon upgrading to LR4, DNG files no longer display as thumbnails, but as the generic Windows icon for an image.
Upon researching the issue, and upgrading the Codecs from the supplier (which still did not fix the issue), the supplier tells me the following:
What we solved [in the update] was a crash with the new files. Adobe did not document their
changes, so there is not much we can do except ignore the files. This is
what happens when owners of proprietary formats decide to change stuff
    without notice
If you turn off the "fast load" and "lossy" options the DNG will still be
created following the published 1.3 specification and will work with 3rd
    party software including ours.
The "new DNGs" are for Adobe private use only at the moment. We don't know
(beyond vague promises on employees personal blogs) if they will ever
document what they did and publish an updated specification, they are
certainly under no obligation to do so. The decision they took not to
release updated DNG specs even before LR4 came out was a deliberate one.
While I resolved the problem by turning "fast load" off, I find it highly disturbing that Adobe has made undocumented changes to the DNG format that break 3rd party software. I thought the whole idea of DNG was that it was an OPEN FORMAT and was to prevent situations such as this. At least this is how they sold it to the public and their argument against "proprietary camera manufactuer RAW formats" that could "change at any time".

Actually JS, RAW files converted to DNG with fast load checked from LR4.0 are read, thumbnails and full images are displayed in preview and with Finder in OSX Lion 10.7.3, along with keywords, EXIF data etc. I don't know whether the preview is the RAW or the fast loaded jpeg
    Not that it helps you
Adobe mentioned that they will be making the 1.3 data specs available in the next couple of months, I canna remember the link offhand, and it was a formal post, not an employee blog
Life changes, things upgrade, that is the way of things, but it is very frustrating.

  • Under Snow Leopard my web browsers no longer display thumbnails.

Since installing Snow Leopard neither Safari not Firefox display thumbnails on certain web sites. The most notable being Google picture search. Everything works fine except the thumbnails are empty white rectangles. If I click on an empty thumbnail I will get taken to an image which displays fine. The problem is thumbnails and thumbnails only.
I downloaded Googles own Chrome and even it can't display thumbnails on a Google picture search. The problem exists also on many other picture sites such as Getty images, but not, for example, on Wikemedia. It happens in all browsers - all of which are completely up to date as is my OS X 10.6.2. My video cards and monitors are all Standard Mac issue from Apple and the drivers supplied by Apple as part of the OS.
In all this confusion the one thing that is absolutely 100% certain is that the problem started from the moment I first powered up Snow Leopard. Of that there is NO doubt. Before then there was never any problem. I am a graphics professional and constantly need to picture search. For the time being I have had to dust off my old G4 and use it as a picture search machine and then network the downloads across to the Mac Pro. That is hardly satisfactory.
Has anyone any suggestions for this bizarre problem? I have done a mass of web search and have found no reference to anything similar.
Getting rather desperate after months of this ...... :o((

Well lepkitty I can report success. My browser is now thumb-nailing faster than ever before.
Problem solved!! You get a gold star!!
In case others with the same problem stumble on this thread here is the solution. I am no techie so It will be simple .......
    Problem:
Safari, or any other OS X browser doesn't thumbnail Google (and many other) picture searches but hangs forever loading the thumbnails leaving empty white rectangles on the screen. Google maps don't zoom, pan or update. The problem is unique to Snow Leopard.
    Cause:
When OS X and Safari (or other OS X browsers) perform certain operations, of which picture searching is one, they speed things up my making multiple simultaneous connections to the host. Rather than loading the thumbnail images one by one they will make multiple connections, to say Google image, and pull down multiple thumbnails simultaneously. Leopard makes up to eight simultaneous connections at a time. Snow Leopard, however, can make as many as sixteen.
This where the trouble starts. Many router's firewalls interpret too many simultaneous requests as a "SYN flood" (This is a form of malicious attack using multiple simultaneous connections. If you really need to know - more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SYN_flood) It seems quite a lot router's firewalls set the simultaneous connection threshold at 10. My Phillips did and Belkins do too. Any attempt to create more connections than this will be treated as malicious and will be blocked by the router.
    Solution:
The solution is to change your router's firewall settings. Every router is different so these directions are rather generic. The precise menus, and wording will change from one to another but, trust me, I am no techie, it's really not difficult .... this isn't going to be rocket science ......
    Here is what you do:
You access your router by entering "http://192.168.1.1" in your browsers address box. You will be asked for a user name and password. You should find the default setting for these in your router's manual. (On most it is "admin","admin")
Once in your router's menu you need to look for firewall settings. You may need to look for "Advanced" settings first and then look for "Firewall".
Once you have found the firewall menu you need to look for "SPI and Anti-DOS" (On my router it's inside a menu called "Intrusion Detection")
On the SPI Anti-Dos page you should find a list of options that you can set.
Among these should be the option to change the number of simultaneous connections. On my router it is called "Maximum incomplete TCP/UDP sessions number from same host". It will probably be set to 10. Raise this to 20 and then click OK, Save, Confirm or whatever your router's menu asks for, to confirm and save the new setting.
That's it! Done and dusted. This has not only fixed the problem on my browser but it has given a real and noticeable boost to all my browsing.
So let's hope the earth moves for you too ..... ;o))
... and a huge vote of thanks to lepkitty for pointing me at this.
If you want to know more about this in greater technical depth then follow the link provided by her earlier in this thread.

  • FCP X doesn't display iMovie clips correctly in Event Library

I have 10 years of clips that are setup by year/date in iMovie. Although I had imported most of the media in 2009, iMovie seems smart enough to read the actual file metadata and find the media recording date, which is prior to the import date. As a result, the clips are diplayed correctly in iMovie Event by Year/Month of actual recording.
However, the Event Library in FCP X doesn't do that at all and lists the events by "Content Creation" date, which is simply reads from the system file date, and NOT the recording date that is embedded into the file.
Bottom line is that Event Library is semi-useless as it doesn't all at display my clisp in the correct order, unlike iMovie that was doing it correctly.
    Any ideas?

I went into Finder and discovered that FCP X created a directory structure where the files are in the correct Year/Month directory structure (as an exact mirror directory structure as the iMovie one), so it's even more weird that the Event Library doesn't display the events correctly???

  • Video imports but does not appear in Event Library

Have a problem with importing video from Sony HDR-SR10. The video plays in the camera and plays during import. The import process completes, but only 3 of 6 clips are shown in event library. Any suggestions???
Also - When attaching the video camera via USB, Iphoto starts along with Imovie. There are some photos in the video camera as this does both still and video. Still images were imported to iphoto and deleted. Yet iphoto still starts???

Where any of the clips that don't show up in the event library a long duration, like over 10 minutes? I had a similar problem with long clips with my Sony SR1.
Here's a thread that gave me a solution with that problem:

  • IPhoto6 - after a full reistall of Snow Leopard, iphoto does not display thumbnails. I've restored from time machine, rebuilt the library and run through the rebuild thumbnails function with no success. The files are there, I just get a dotted outline.

iPhoto6 on iMac running SL - after a full reistall of Snow Leopard, iphoto does not display thumbnails. I've restored the library from time machine, rebuilt the library from iPhoto and run through the rebuild thumbnails function with no success. The files are there, I just get a dotted outline instead of the thumbnails. Does anyone have any other ideas on how to restore the thumbnails?

    Try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Alerts for recurring events in iCal no longer display on iPhone after iOS5 upgrade

That pretty much says it.  I have a daily meeting in my iCal, with two alarms set, one for 15 minutes before and one for 5 minutes before.  The alerts no longer display on my phone after the upgrade.  (They appear on my Mac no problem.)  Has anyone else seen this problem?  I have notifications turned on for iCal , set to Alerts.  Tried badges, tried turning notifications off then on, to no avail.  It doesn't display for recurring events that were in my calendar before the upgrade and for those created after the upgrade.  I don't seem to have a problem with regular i.e. non-recurring events.  Doesn't seem to matte also if it is the default calendar or a different calendar either.  (I tried Reminders and that worked fine, but I don't want to have type all of my recurring events in to iCal and then in to Reminders as well....)
    Thanks very much

I'm having the same problem on my iMac (works on a different phone on my MBP). I restored the iphone and no dice. I'm also constantly getting a beach ball... Hope someone out there knows a workaround.

  • Thumbnail corruption in Events library and timeline

I am seeing thumbnail corruption in my events library and timeline.  Several thumbnails of jpg images that I imported into the library are showing up as corrupted - color bands and whatnot.  When dragged to the timeline the same thing.  But when I play them in a storyline, everything is ok.  I can ignore it but has anyone else experienced this issue.  I am using 10.0.3 on a MacPro running Lion.

Hi Tom, Thank you for your reply. Please forgive my ignorance. I did try to find the answer here but I am new at this.  Could you direct me to that thread please? Yes the external hard drive is used for time machine and I did see something at one time regarding an issue but evidently it didnt sink in or stick. The drive is a g-raid I have had for several years used on a macbook pro but now I have a new imac and fcpx. works fine with all other apps, when the drive came out of the box it said preformatted and just ran with it.

in imovie11 the finished film shows up in the events library but the project file is missing. A complete search of hard drive fails to find it. Any way to reconstruct  the project file from the finished film? I need to re-edit the movie.

Thanks for the info. I do have the Aperture 2 disc so I'll re-install and repair library then give it a go again. It will probably take a few days as I have a HUGE library. I'll let you know the outcome when it completes! Thanks again for the help.

  • Event library 1 hour limit on video when imported videos are longer

In my event library, none of my events are more than 1 hour in length, and the video after the 1 hour mark is unavailable. When I import the event it says "87 minutes imported" or however long the clip is, yet only the first hour can be viewed, added to project etc. They are not all exactly 1 hour, some are 58 or 59 minutes, and the longest is 1:00:54 long. It is frustrating because I'm trying to import football games to make highlights, so I'm missing a lot of matches. Why is this happening/how can I access the footage in each event after the 1 hour mark? Please help me!

    Rodrigo,
We seem to be able to "stream" (progressively download) videos over 35 minutes on PCs, but not on Macs. Without more input from Apple, we don't really have any clue as to what is responsible for this problem. We had considered breaking the files into several parts to take advantage of the streaming capability, but we have decided to just have our students download the entire files if need be, since the only users affected are Mac users.
I'm just now testing to see if there is a duration limit on streaming files over the PC. After a little playing around, I think there might be a limit to the PC's streaming capabilities as well. I'll update this thread with any discoveries.
But from what I can see, you should be able to stream files over the PC. How much bandwidth does your school have?

  • CDs no longer displayed on music library on iTunes (Windows)

All my old CDs which were uploaded onto iTunes are no longer displayed in library anymore, although their folders are still where they used to be. The only music files displayed are the ones which were bought on-line. Any help on how to get all my CDs viewed back again?

When I updated my iphone 4s the picture of the person calling me is no longer displayed full screen and the thumbnail picture is too small.  Is there anything I can do to change this?

Yes, hopefully.. Go to www.apple.com/ feedback  and let them know how upset you are!!  I did along with many others.  It's the only way to let Apple know they made a HUGE mistake here..

  • IMovie 11 projects no longer working, preview window is glitched or black, event library not playing imported vids

I am having a lot of trouble with iMovie 11.  I bought a new MacBook Pro 15" for the sole purpose of editing surgical videos for work.  iMovie 11 was working great initially for me (taking full length surgical video - up to 2 hours) and editing these down to anywhere from 5 to 30 min videos highlighting crucial steps for the surgeries along with transitions, ken burns, etc  (with the plan of overlaying narrative voice-over later).  I had about 15 of these videos edited sitting in my Project Library and multiple imported videos (dvd to m4v via handbrake then imported via iMovie 11) in my Project Library.  Now none of my projects play in the preview window, it's either black or a weird glitchy picture (like messed up pic of my doc or desktop... really weird) and only about 2 of my imported videos play in the project library, otherwise they are just black when I roll over them.  My projects are still intact as far as edited clip lengths and transitions, but nothing plays, even in full screen mode.  I tried making a new project and the imported video shows in the event library but when I add it to a project it's black (but does play in full screen mode, but impossible to edit this way).  I think the audio is actually intact although i'm not positive because these videos don't have any audio (there's some baseline level that fluctuates on the audio bars).
I tried finalizing and exporting a project as an m4v (one that was a combination of two edited imported videos - one of the source imported vids working in the event library and the other not working) and the first half is all glitched up with no surgery video, but the second half is there with the transitions and everything (the half that is working in the event library).  This part does not show up when I am trying to edit the project.
fyi - I had deleted some of the videos from my event library to unclutter a little some time ago, the projects were still working after that.
I can find all of my imported videos (in .mov format) that should be working in the event library when I look in the folder:
    users/me/movies/iMovie events
If someone could please help me resolve this issue, I would really appreciate it.  I put a lot of work and time into these videos and it would be near impossible to start from scratch (which would probably be on some other movie editor like windows movie maker since my iMovie is not working properly even for new projects).  I'm hoping this is just some sort of glitch that can be fixed and my projects are still salvagable.  I can't remember if this started after I did a system software update or not.  This will be a huge dissapointment for me in the Apple platform if I have to scrap my projects because I had just switched over from the PC platform.
I even got Norton antivirus and internet security to make sure I don't have some sort of weird virus.
    I have a Feb 2011 15 in MacBook Pro 2.2 Ghz, 4 g RAM, 750 g HD, 1 g vid card.  iMovie ver 9.0.4.  Lion 10.7.2

Did you by any chance upgrade your Mac OS from version 10.6 (Snow Leopard) to 10.7 (Lion) during the time you were working in iMovie on all these projects?
If not, start by deleting the iMovie Preferences file.
    Go to the Desktop
Hold down the Option key and choose the Go Menu > Library
    Go to Preferences > com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
Move the .plist file to the trash and restart iMovie
See if the Project files react any differently. Failing that try doing a Repair Disk Permissions:
Restart the Mac, hold down the Option key continuously until 2 hard drive icons appear
Choose the Recovery Volume as your startup disk and let it run until you see the Desktop
Choose Disk Utility from the Recovery Menu
Run Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility
Reboot the Mac and when you see the Desktop appear launch iMovie
See if the Project files are the same or different. Next step after this is to one at a time take the Project folders out of users/me/movies/imovie projects. Move one to the desktop and start iMovie. Try skimming the projects that acted up recently. Moving one project at a time might help isolate which project may be causing problems. You can also place project folders back in their original location after doing this testing and iMovie will recognize them on the next relaunch. It won't hurt anything.

  • .bmp files do not show as icons in the event library - I am having to convert them to .jpg  to achieve a display

Although .bmp files are to some extent supported, I find that on importing them they do not show as icons in the event library. I am having to convernt them to .jpg files to produce this result.   Am I doing something wrongly, or is this the experience of others as well?

Yes - I've posted one of the files to Dropbox and it appears perfectly in picture form on my IPad.   So it seems there is nothing wrong with the files.  I'm even more puzzled now!  I'll try to upload a smaller (less than 2mb) file here.  The files I am using in the project, which is a kind of family history using stills,  are a complete mix of types - tif, jpg, Canon raw(cr2), psd and bmp.   Some, including, I suspect, many of the .bmps are scans from old prints, as this one.
