TS3433 Managing Airport Express in Lion.

I am using OS X (10.7.4) and my current version of Airport Utility (6.1) will not support my Airport Express Units - it advises use of Airport 5.6 - but my computer will not let me install this.  Any tips?

Shawn thansk for your help.
Yes, Shawn, I am trying to install 5.6.1 - the installation guide takes me to the available disks but shows the HD as unavailable - yellow triangle, which does not disappear even if  I wait a minute.  Its a bit frustrating but life wouldn't be the same without these challenges.

  • Manage Airport Express from Windows computer

Is it possible to manage the Airport Express from a Windows computer?
Most of the posts here deal with connection problems from windows to the device - my problem is that I no longer have a macintosh and so I no longer have access to the airport admin utilty.
Does Apple provide a set of admin tools that run on Windows?

It does not work for the airport express. At least I have been unable to get it to work. "An error occurred while trying to access the base station" Is the error I get. iTunes has no problem playing it.
I used to be able to access my Airport Expresses with the software that came with it. But unfortunately I lost my disk and can 't find the right software to download anywhere. It's all for the airport and not the airport express.
Very disappointed with Apple's support for such an expensive device.

  • Airport express on lion and airport utility 5.6

How am I supposed to configure my airport express when utility 5.6 isn't compatible with lion?
Is there some other software I can use?
    Thanks

Please check again to make sure that you are using the correct application below on your Lion machine:
AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
But, if you have moved to Mountain Lion, you will not be able to install AirPort Utility 5.6 unless you use a workaround. See this article for details:

  • Managing airport express from Air disables the express

    Hello,
Our Airport Express was not showing up in the wireless networks. I reset the express by holding a paperclip in it. It came up and the Air recognized it, but when I tried to configure it, it seemed to work but then the express never came back online. The only way I can get it to work is by using our old mini running Tiger. I don't know if it is a Leopard problem or a MacAir problem, but one of them wrecks the airport express.
Anyone know how fix it so the new computer can manage the express?
    thanks
    Bob

Have you tried setting the AEX back to factory condition and then using the Air to configure it? I had to do this with one of mine in order to get it to work. Also, be sure you use the correct security settings when you update it.

  • Manage airport express g osx 10.9

    Hello:
I cannot figure out what software I can use to manage my (old) Airport Express G with OSX 10.9 .  Either I can't admin the AE with new versions, or can't install older versions.
I do not have a WiFi card in my Mac Pro.
    Please advise.

Thanks for this suggestion, but I really can't see how removing administrative support (by the owner) is an acceptible decision for a new OS version.  If Apple insists on using their proprietary app to administer, which is contrarely to every other vendor I know which supports full administration via Web page, and often other methods less user friendly.
I logged into the Airport from a Windows computer.  Again, what kind of a decision is removing support from the manufacturer's OS while continuing to support it from your chief OS competitor?  The message here is simply "buy our PCs" but not anything else, including all of Apple TV, iPhone, and other products.  Perhaps Apple doesn't see the connection, but I don't own an iPhone because of the reduced number and diversity of applications and flexibility compared with my Samsung Galaxy 3 running Android.  And, providing the same functions via add-on applications would cost me at least twice if I had an iPhone.  This phone is as stable as my iPod.
Sorry for the tangent, but the point I'm trying, perhaps not well, to make is that removing support through eliminating abilty  of the the only application available to support a product produced by that same company is not a defensible move.  If Apple had provided a way to configure this product via any web browser (without any loss of functionality) that would not only be a customer-focused decision, but would solve an ongoing issue.  What I can't understand is why this product cannot be configured like any other router.  But perhaps, Apple is justifying lack of funcitonality by avoiding calling the product what it really should be called, and the maintainance of a proprietary configuration program somehow "suppots" this decision.
Apparently I now own an nearly unconfigurable product which, although some people might believe otherwise is not obsolete.  Maintaining that N and A band wifi are required for a router to be accepted, for example, may be a competitive reality, go home and scan your neighborhood networks.  Note the % using the 5 Mhz Band.

  • What download do i need for v4.2 airport express on lion 10.7.1?

i have the cd but i have a mac mini with out a disk drive. which down load do i need? v4.2 AirPort on a Mac Mini with OSX Lion v10.7.1

You should already have the application on your Mac
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > AirPort Utility
    Give that a try
If this is a really older AirPort, you may need this application:
AirPort Admin Utility for Graphite and Snow 4.2.5
This may or may not run on Lion....I cannot verify.

    Hi,
At you question : Lynksys 160-wr ore something....
This is something above my capabilities.
The way that tab is configured is AUTOMATIC.
Trying to do it manually require IP for rouer, and I dont't know how to get it, even if I perfectly know what an IP address is.
It is also required to enter IPV6 address, and there to I am lost.
Lastly there is the last tab, amaller bar that I don't know.
May be explain in what way, having this manually entered is different that automatic would make me understand correctly.  Then, may be indicate how to get these info to fill in.
But, I can say that I am now using APPLE TV-2, and that the first Lion 10.7 patch seems to have solved this.

  • HT5022 I've downloaded AirPort Util 5.6, in order to manage my Gen 1 Airport Express. But when I go to mount, it says it can't be installed as version of OSX (latest Mountain Lion) is not supported. Feels like Im back using Windows...

I've downloaded AirPort Util 5.6, in order to manage my Gen 1 Airport Express - because Airport Util 6.0 won't recognise it.
But when I go to mount, it says Airport 5.6 it can't be installed as my version of OSX (latest Mountain Lion) is not supported/does not support on 5.6.
Super unhelpful error messages bringing back memories of using Windows...
Anyone sussed this, or have Apple just fazed out the original Airport Express hardware on the sly?

Generation 1 AirPort Express is Model No A1264. Check the side of your Express to look for the model number there.  AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion will configure this model.
More likely, you have an older "b/g" version of the Express. Apple started the "Generation" thing with "n" capable devices.  The Model number of your device is likely either A1084 or A1088. AirPort Utility in Mountain Lion no longer supports these older "b/g" devices.
If you have a Mac there running an earlier version of the operating system, you can use that to configure the Express.
Or, there is is workaround to install AirPort Utility 5,6 for Lion on Mountain Lion. See this article for details:

  • Airport Utility 6.1 is incompatible with older Airport Express. Apple suggests to use Airport Utility 5.6 but it isn't compatible with Lion. How can I use Airport Utility?

I have an Airport Express 802.11b/g, model nº A1084. Mac OS X 10.7.4. When I run Airport Utility it says that the version (6.1) isn't compatible with the base station and suggests to use the version 5.6. I try to download and install it but a message says that the version of Mac OS is not compatible with this version of Airport Utility. Apple is trying to make me crazy?

Thank you Bob for the correct link. To be honest I have no idea how you found that. The Airport 6.1 utility gives the message that 5.6 is needed, and the link unhelpfully just goes to the US support home (I am UK for a start…) - and endless navigating eventually gets you to 'other Airport Utility Software' - and there is, the incorrect version for Lion…
I have managed to setup the Express using the software link you provided :-)
iteachcoffee - workaround - get someone with Lion on a laptop, or better, Pre-Lion so you don't have to download the special software  (like the wonderful Snow Leopard for example) and set up your Airport with that.
The Apple answer I'm sure is simply: Get a newer Airport! ;-) (annoying I know, my old one works perfectly!)

  • Older model Airport Express won't work with Mountain Lion Airport Utility

just upgraded to Mountain Lion and noticed that of my network of three airport expresses connected to various stereo speaker systems throughout the house, one of the older models won't work with the supplied version of Airport Utility (v 6.1). Here is the message it gives in the utility when I attempt to select this particular Airport Express:
"This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support."
Well, I go to download v 5.6 and none of the versions available will install on Mountain Lion! (even the version for Lion) Catch 22.
Any resolution to this (other than having to go out and buy a newer version Airport Express)?
    Michael

  • Airport Express Bricked by Mountain Lion?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and we moved so I had to reconfigure my Airport Express.  Opening Airport Utility I see my AE, but can't manage it - I get an alert box that says:
This version of AirPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use AirPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support.
Ok, fine. Only when you follow that link you go to a version of 5.6 that can't even be installed.  Searching more I discoverd that was because it was for older systems and found a link to a Lion version of 5.6, but alas - that cannot be installed on Mountain Lion either.  So I searched more....
Soooo....  Um...  Really?  That's it?  What am I missing - I must have missed the button to download the right version of Airport Utility for Mountain Lion, right?
Please tell me this isn't the way I am going to discover that my perfectly working WiFi is no longer in line with Apple's strategic aim at the living room... or the universe, and thus is being rendered instantly, surreptitiously inoperable...
Surely I just missed the right button.

Airport Utility V6.1 does not work with Airport Express B/G.  That was the whole point.  The latest, perhaps - but to a fault.
Just saw Alfred DeRose's link above (thanks!) - indeed Ars used Pacifist too.  It is an alternative way to open installers that - uhem - don't cooperate.  This is where I downloaded it:

  • Airport Utility 5.6 for older Airport Express on Mountain Lion?

Yesterday, I upgraded my MacBook Pro to Mountain Lion.  I was having some issues anyways, so I did a clean install.  I'm now restoring my files, and reinstalling my applications.  I went to the Airport Utility to configure my Airport Express (I wanted to also set up wireless printing now), but as I already knew, the latest version of the Airport Utility doesn't support my Airport Express's (I have 2).  When I select it, it says to download Aiport Utility 5.6.  So, I did.  However, the installer tells me that my version of operating system isn't supported, so it terminated on me.
Does anyone know what I can do to manage me Airport Express's?  I don't want to spend the money to get new ones because they work just fine (I extend the WiFi for my iPhone to get better signal outside, so 802.11N isn't going to help me there anyways).
    I appreciate any help.
    Thanks!

As an alternative to Pacifist, you may use two command-line utilities built in OS X: pkgutil to "unflatten" the flat package, and ditto to extract the Payload file inside it.
Assuming AirPortUtility56.dmg mounts to a volume AirPortUtility containing the flat package AirPortUtility56.pkg, then
    cd ~/Desktop
    pkgutil --expand /Volumes/AirPortUtility/AirPortUtility56.pkg AirPortUtility56
will unflatten the package into a folder AirPortUtility56 say on the Desktop. And
    ditto -x AirPortUtility56/AirPortUtility56Lion.pkg/Payload Payload
wil extract the Payload file inside into a folder Payload say also on the Desktop.
AirPort Utility 5.6.app is there inside Payload/Applications/Utilities.

  • Airport express 1st generation on mountain lion

I have a mac os 10.8 (mountain lion): can i use an airport express 1st generation? The mac doesn't recognize it and tells me to download airport utility 5.6, but 5.6 doesn't seem to exist for 10.8, only 10.7.

Just upgraded to ML and now I can't supervise the Extreme base stations (A1088). Argh.
This should have been mentioned somewhere (during the upgrade or something). Because my devices are 1st generation devices, albeit G-mode ones. This distinction should be made clear in the documentation and/or knowledge base articles.
Also the new airport utility (6.1) suggests I install 5.6, which, even tho, available on the website it doesn't seem to be installable in ML. By the way the KB mentions that it supports Lion (10.7.2) or later.. yeah right!
Now I'm stuck with no solutions available. Any other idea before I hack together a VM just for airport utility 5.6?
