TS3579 How do I reinstall mail app on Snow Leopard 10.6.8

Is there an update file that I can pull a recent version of the Mac Mail app from onto my machine?
I am on Mac OSX 10.6.8
Situation:
I never use Mac Mail, but a recent client of mine was trying to configure it and so I thought I'd pull it up and help them setup an account on the phone.
The problem is,Mac Mail doesn't come up at all. I rarely use email right on my machine, what with Gmail and Thunderbird as my usual modalities with email. The thought of littering my machine with actual email files seems archaic.
So I deleted Mail app.
I then ran Software Update to see if it would notice the app as missing and attempt to reinstall but that was just wishful thinking. App store doesn't seem to care about existing packages on the machine beyond whatever is purchased in App store so that was a waste of time also.
I don't want to have to go through a lot of shenanigans with update programs and DVDs ...
I remember seeing somewhere how someone simply pulled the app out a recent update and just dragged it onto their machine - if anyone knows which update for 10.6.x Snow Leopard would have this app in it thanks in advance.
Thanks in advance

FIXED - THE SOLUTION
1. Locate your Apple Install DVD #1 - "Mac OSX Install DVD"
2. Download & install Pacifist See http://www.charlessoft.com/
3. Download the "Security Update 2012-004" file from here:http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586
4. Delete all existing versions of Mail.app on system (See also https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4419244?start=0&tstart=0)
5. Open Pacifist and choose Open Package
Browse to the Optional Installs folder on the DVD, and open Optional Installs package (mpkg)
Pacifist will take a few minutes to open the package and display its contents.
"Now would be a great time to fill out your registration card" or go get a cup of coffee or cocktail, yes you have time.
Once the package contents have been revealed, locate the Mail.app and attempt to drag it to your Applications folder.
When you do this, Pacifist will prompt you for permission to extract it to where you dragged it to.
Click Extract
Then enter your password:
And Pacifist will extract the Mail.app to your Applications folder:
Yes, my apps are all nicely organized - it is legal to organize and declutter the disorganized mess that is your Applications folder, which is how Apple installs it. The only problem is that because Apple thinks a disorganized mess of an Applications folder is just fine, their people don't take into account actually locating the Mail.app when they do the security update, and just assume you'll have it in the sheeple location of "Applications". That's what caused this problem to begin with.
Now, if you try to run this version of the app, on a system previously updated to 10.6.8, you will get an error:
6. Right, so now you run the SecUpd2012 004, and reboot.
As a side note,  Security Update 2012-004 will s h i t  an unusable version of the Quicktime player into your Applications folder also.
See it there without the proper icon.
Since I had accidently deleted Quicktime 7 from my machine, not really missing it, but I was wondering what happened to it ... so using Pacifist I was also able to get a working version back onto my system the same way as Mail. So while Security Update 2012-004 s h i t s this unusable version into the Applications folder, it does nothing to update the Quicktime 7 app. Perhaps someone else can explain that. So I just deleted the unusable Quicktime Player app.
Now, Mail.app works fine even before reboot, as does Quicktime as is from the Optional Installs mpkg but you gotta reboot after the update but it should work already.

  • How can i reinstall os one Imac Snow leopard 10,6,4

i have to reinstall my i-mac, snow leopard OS. the problem i have is that the mac dont takes the install cd, no matter what i try. the only thing what happens is that i can see the apple and i can hear that its working, but the cd becomes throw out after some seconds. im not able to start it at all, no matter what i do. after i let run the hardware-test i get the message that nothing is wrong, but still i can not install or start the mac. i have no idea what i should do or how i should do it. it was now 2 times in a service, the only thing i was told that everything is ok and i only have to reinstall it....i try my best, but it still will not do anything!! also the company info-care norge which has the mac-service tells me only to install all new and that it has nothing to do with my guaranty.

Report the company to AppleCare directly:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
Obviously they don't know some basic troubleshooting steps and need to either lose their service provider agreement or get better training.
Some of those basic steps are to:
    1. Determine if your machine is too new to use the 10.6.3 retail, and then determine if you were using the prebundled disc that came with your Mac. Look at your Mac's serial number. The 5 alphanumeric characters that start it tell you how new it is.
xx013 or greater to xx111 can't use anything other than the prebundled discs.
xx935 to xx952 and xx001 to xx012 can use the 10.6.3 retail and prebundled discs that came with the Mac.
xx602 to xx934 can use any Snow Leopard retail and the prebundled discs, as long as 1 GB of RAM or more is installed.
xx601 and less can't use Snow Leopard at all.
Retail discs must look like * and not say Upgrade Dropin, or OEM.
x can be any letter or number.
    2. Make sure the Mac is less than 4 years old. If it is more than 4 years old, to check if the PRAM battery is aging.
    3. Determine if any of their discs that meet qualifications of #1 work. If they do, then ask Apple ship you replacement discs. If they don't, they should test an external optical bootable DVD drive to see if that works. And if that doesn't work to determine if the machine is stuck in a firmware upgrade loop, or firmware password reset loop, or if the hard drive is dying, or if one of your connected peripherals might not be compatible with the installer.

  • Erased Mac OS Lion, But how can I reinstall Mac OS X Snow Leopard

    Greetings
I had erased Mac OS Lion, and I woudl like to Reinstall Mac OS X  Snow Leopard agine from DVD installer?
    I have MacBook Pro, i7
    have a nice day
    Suleyman

Infact, I didn't deleted any partition, I created a new partition, in windows, using Computer Manager, then I formated this new partition, after that, it seems that windows changed the other partitions !!
I boot my MacBookPro using a snow leopard Mac DVD, and click on Disk Utility.
    There is 3 partitions:
    Disk0S1 440 GB
    Disk0S2 60GB
    Disk0S3 2MB !!
partition type for three of them is Wondows_LDM, not Mounted, and no more info about other parameteres.
When I click on repair disk, or verify disk, it says: "reparing volume failed: Unrecognized file system"
Note: when I purchased my macbook pro A1278, The Original osx was Lion.

  • How do I reinstall mail.app on OS 10.6.8 without an install disk

Software update recently updated my software automatically to 10.6.8 on my MacBook 2.4 Ghz Intel Core Duo. Apparently because i organize my applications into folders inside the root Applications folder, the mail app was not updated properly. I put the mail.app back in the root application folder and downloaded MacOSXUpdCombo10.6.8. After running the update I still have the same problem I get the notice "You can't use this version of Mail with this version of Mac OS X. You have Mail version 4.5 (1084/1085). It can’t be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 (Build 10K549). For more information, click the Help button." I don't have original install disk available to me. I don't know what I can do to get my Mail.app to work it is very important because it sorts out all the junk mail. Is there any way to reinstall mail without the original system disk?
Please Allen Eckhart, don't want your help. Can someone else help me?

Seems Apple is making things more difficult with every OS update. Back in the day you used to be able to organize your applications instead of having them all in one folder. You used to have a lot more freedom. More and more it is just easier to use a third party app. So I'm gonna install Thunderbird until Apple comes up with an easy way to fix the mail app. it seems that eveything in help says you just gotta reinstall the system from scratch. I would rather just use an open source product that I can put into any forlder I want without having to worry about it screwing itself up. Had similar experience with Safari now it seems like it is time to get rid of Mail.

  • How to get iPhone sounds for Mail.app on Snow Leopard?

    Hi,
I like the "new text message" sound called "Chime". I would like to use this sound for new mails in Mail.app, too. Is there any way I can download this sound on my MacBook Pro (from some webpage?)?
The sound "Glas" is available both on Mail.app and on the iPhone, but note the "Chime" sound.
    Cheers

  • Mail app and Snow Leopard, Mountain Lion and Mavericks

I have, and use, 3 different Macs, an older MacMini running Snow Leopard, an older MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion and a new MacBook Pro running Mavericks.  My personal email account, setup using the Mail.app, works fine on Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion.  On the MBP running Mavericks, I setup the Mail.app using the same settings as on Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion.  It doesn't work.  Nothing but timeouts.
I've read a lot about the problems with Mavericks and IMAP and updated Mavericks apps, including Mail.  Still no go.  I'm not so much asking for help as registering that the IMAP problems aren't fixed.
But if anyone has some ideas, I'm listening.
    Thanks all!
    Brenda

I'd check to see if the latest version of the plug-ins are Snow Leopard compatible or not, unless you have a really large number of plug-ins to deal with, where you could just see what's broke and what's not, post upgrade. But beware of retaining the old ones. For example, 10.6 Mail broke the GPG-Mail plug-in that works under 10.5.x. Search the Snow Leopard Mail forum using the search phrase "GPG Mail" OR GPGMail OR "GPG-Mail" or other mail plug-in names of interest to you.

  • Trouble dragging emails to folder in Mail app after snow leopard upgrade.

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, the mac mail app is not dragging emails into a folder (mailbox) the same as it was before. If I select multiple images, then drag them into a folder, it leaves some of them out, and only drags some of them, so I have to go back and find reselect the images it didn't move and drag them into the folder again.
It doesn't always happen, but I find it happens most of the time. Anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions?

Same issue here. Specifically, it seems to be an issue when the emails aren't all right next to each other.
I thought 10.6.2 would fix it, but no such luck.

  • Mail.app on Snow Leopard won't retrieve messages through POP3

    Hi.
I've just recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. I managed to setup a Gmail IMAP account which worked fine. Then I tried to setup POP accounts of my GoDaddy hosting/email plan. The setup seemed to finish without problems but when I hit the "Get mail" button... Nothing happens. And I mean "nothing". No error, no notice, no downloaded messages, nothing. I can't even send email using their smtp servers.
Anyone has any idea what might be wrong?
    Thank you.

'Nothing' usually means the connection to the server is ok, but no mail is ready to be retrieved or sent.
Confirm you can ping those servers and that mail is waiting to be pulled, etc. then trash & redo the connections again - restart your computer and see if it works.
If still now joy, try this - find the /Library/Preferences folder in your user/Home folder and then locate and delete this file:
    com.apple.mail.plist
*Caution* - doing this may clear your account settings so be sure to note those first in the event you are required to reconfigure, etc.

  • How do I reinstall Mail in Mac OS-10.8

My MAIL application crashed every time I sent an email. NOW, it simply will not boot up when clicked. HOW DO I REINSTALL MAIL (I tried deleting it, but the system won't allow me to delete Mail ... I was hoping that I could reinstall Mountain Lion and begin anew). Thanks, Eric

You would have to reinstall Mountain Lion, which you can do from your recovery partition (hold command R down as you restart).
There is an app called Pacifist that I used in the past, it can in theory remove just the Mail.app installer from the entire ML Installer; but you'd still have to download the ML installer.
Pacifist is at : CharlesSoft — software you always wished someone would write
Another option would be to restore Mail from a backup, from Time Machine, for example.
Have you tried anything else, like repairing your hard drive, or repairing permissions, or deleting the .plist file?

  • How do I reinstall Mail?

    Hello,
Just wondering if there is a way to reinstall Mail.app?
To cut a long story short, Mail went bonkers after a power cut and no fixes have worked - so I"m thinking maybe take it off completely and start again!
    Thanks,
    Sarah

dunno if a reinstall from the original installer dvd and then run the combo update for 10.4.11 would help any.
mail crashes frequently one of my 2 macminis*; on the other mac, this program refuses to do a search within the body of any mail.
thus i wonder: is there a new(er) version than "2.1.3. (753.1/753)" of mail app available somewhere?
(*e.g. for the previously instabile safari, i've found a new build available at the apple developers' site).
You might want to start a new thread to avoid polluting this one as this seems to be a different issue. I don't think you'll find Mail anywhere on its own so the latest version for Tiger is the one you've got.
Sounds as if you might have two issues here.
    1) crashing case: are the crashes random or is there a pattern?
    2) search case: what exactly happens when you try to search?
both) repair permissions using /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility if you haven't already; boot from the install disk and use Disk Utility to repair the startup volume if you still have issues, then reboot and repair permissions again
if necessary) try another user account - create if necessary in the Accounts pane of System Preferences - does the problem still occur in that account?

  • How do you reinstall the app store on a mac computer?

I accidentally deleted the app store on my macbook pro. How do you reinstall the app store app on your computer?

There is no Mac App Store on Mac OS X 10.6.5 or earlier.
On Mac OS X 10.6.6 through 10.6.8, run the combo updater for your OS version or a newer Snow Leopard one.
On Mac OS X 10.7 or newer, restart with the Command and R keys held down, and reinstall the OS.

    Howdy alegarfer97,
In order to reinstall the applications that are installed as part of the system, you'll need to reinstall OS X. While the article linked below is written for OS X Mavericks (10.9), the steps are the same for Lion (10.7) through Yosemite (10.10).
