TS3623 I just updated my Apple TV and today it is taking 3 hours to download my movie. Why?
I know it's not my Internet speed or anything on my end, because everything other than the apple tv movies are downloading quickly. It's just the Apple TV that is slow. I just did the recent update, could this be the culprit. I'm throwing this thing out the window. My Roku box works a zillion times better!
Have you verified the the speed using speedtest.net? It should be at least 8mbps for 1080P. If it's 720P then 6mbps. Sometimes ISPs throttle.
Have you checked for interference (istumbler or netstumbler)
Are you using your ISPs DNS
An update wouldn't cause this and it is often something on the network. Best not to assume and verify these things.

Bought a brand new Apple TV, worked fine for 3 days but then the picture went blank (possibly after an auto update?) and I observed a quickly flashing white light on the Apple TV. Manual indicates this means it is "having problems" (no kidding) and recommends restoring the software via a micro-USB cable (cable not provided).
Acquired a cable and attempted this fix but after following the procedure the Apple TV never showed up in iTunes, so I'm unable to perform the restore. Returning the device today, not sure if we want to get another or just give up and save the $100. -

How fast is your internet - sounds as though it's 1Mbps or less?
For HD movies 6Mbps is needed for near instant playback.
AppleTv has to prebuffer much of the movie to allow uninterrupted playback if you have <6Mbps, how long this takes depends on the average connection speed - at 3.5 Mbps currently it takes around 40 mins for mine to buffer HD whereas Sd is near instant to play.
AppleTV2 has limited memory and using it to do other tyhings while a rental is prebuffering can flush any downloaded protion requiring you to start again from scratch - it can be better to rent in iTunes then once it's fully downloaded play on AppleTV under Computers>iTunes library>Rentals column.

This apple tv has been nothing but a huge pain in the *** so far. I started watching a movie that I rented and then it stops 20 minutes into the movie and says it will need between 3 and 7 hours to download the rest and be ready to play. ***?

I have seen you make several posts on different threads always pushing istumbler and namebench to help solve this problem. While I do appreciate the help, it seems like you must work either for one of those companies or for Apple. I own 4 Apple TV 3's in three different locations (my office, home, beach house). I am having this problem at all three. I too had ATV 2's before and had no problems with downloading movies/buffering. The only common denominator for all three locations is they are all connected wirelessly through an Apple Time Capsule and are using high-speed cable Internet. I am using my ISPs DNS in all three locations, have little to no interference, and have minimum internet speeds of 15 mbps. Through process of elimination, the problem has to lie either with Apple or with my internet service provider. The funny thing is I don't have internet problems with anything else. I realize that an ethernet connection would make everything better, but that is not feasible. Aren't the ATV's designed to be used wirelessly? If it is a problem of "high traffic time" with my cable in the evenings, do you know of any way of getting my ISP to improve this? Otherwise, it seems to be an Apple problem. I will note that the iTunes store has gone offline several times in the last couple of weeks. Again, this has never happened to me before. Any help is much appreciated. I am a devoted Apple user, and this is the first time I have been this frustrated. Why pay for the fastest internet possible if my Apple TV is still not going to work? -
Why would I have updated if I knew it was going to require the micro usb which i dont own. Now I cant use it tonight or until I get a micro usb. Why is it needed at all? Apple need to step it up on this, its unacceptable, especially when none of their products even use micro usb!
The device is in recovery mode due to the upgrade failing.
microUSB cables are fairly common... most likely you already have one.
Simply connect the ATV via the cable to a computer running iTunes and restore. -

When I charge my I pad I just get the apple sign and not a charge. After hours of charging sometimes I might get a slight red battery but then it returns back to the apple sign. I am using the correct battery.

That doesn't sound good at all.
Since the Reset didn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
Finally, if the Restore doesn't work, let the battery drain completely. Then recharge for at least an hour and Restore again. -
Hi! I just update my apple tv 2nd gen to the new solfware but it only show the itunes icon on the tv and after shows nothing on the tv screen. What i can do to fix that?
Welcome to the Apple Community.
If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
Open iTunes.
Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device) -
I just got an apple tv and it dosen't work at all. I tried to use the home share feature with my iMac and both devices don't see each other, yet they are o the same network. I am not using a apple router. I tried updating the apple tv to see if that would resolve the issue but now the status light just blinks rapidly. I tried using itunes restore it but all i get is an unknown error. So with all of this said what is the fix apple?

Verify that access to ports 80 and 443 are allowed on your network.
Verify that communication to albert.apple.com or photos.apple.com is not blocked by a firewall, or other Internet security setting.
Discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps underAdvanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations.
Restore your device while connected to a different network.
Restore using a different computer. -
I just updated my Apple ID to a current email address, it worked on my laptop but my phone is still using the old one and neither password works. I can't download or use anything other than phone calls and texting on my phone now. Help!

tap your id then click sign out
then sign back in and you should be fine -

I just had this issue. Go into settings and reset the Apple TV after the firmware update. (note just "reset settings" and NOT back to factory settings)

I just did the update to version 5.2 on our ATV2 and now I'm having the exact same problem as the OP- all attempts to access any iTunes services i.e. Movies or TV result in dropping back to the ATV Main menu. Per Winston's suggestion, I logged out of iTunes and then tried to log back in. I am getting a message "the server is not responding- please try again later".
FWIW- all my non-iTunes services on the ATV are working fine- i.e. Netflix and YouTube.
Sounds like the update has overwhelmed the Apple servers.
