Maybe you are trying to restore at an old version of iOS...
Try to re-install iTunes on your PC.
If it still doesn't work check some solution on the "support" section of the Apple web site, and then (if you didn't find anything) you can try to go to an Apple Store

My iphone decided to run down it's battery and I have spent the past few hours trying to restore using itunes. But the most recent code I got (1656) I cannot find on teh apple code page and have no idea what it is. Can anyone help? Think I am ready to go mad at this point!

Iphone 4s - tried to update to IOS6 but phone wont allow update or restore, just shows the connection to ITunes logo, have tried the hold down home & power switch but this doesnt work.

Try these troubleshooting steps.
If that Article did not resolve it... then perhaps a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is required..
Be sure to make an appointment first...

That error message may be indicative of the Device being Hacked / jailbroken.... If this is the case then you are on your own.
