If the screen shows a plug going to itunes, then you have no choice, It's in recovery mode. You'll be given the chance to restore from a backup either from itunes or icloud.
I assume when you got the message to update (was this for the ios or update some apps?), that was before the device when dead. At any rate, doing a restore does not change the ios.

If that Article did not resolve it... then perhaps a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is required..

- Go to settings>Store and sign out and sign into your account.
- Apps are locked to the account that purchased them.
- To update apps you have to sign into the account that purchased the apps. If you have apps that need updating purchased from more than one account you have to update them one at a time until the remaining apps were purchased from one account. -

Try to restore from another known-good computer and network.

I tried to play a song on my iphone 4 but it didnt let me so i thought let me update my iphone to the IOS 6.0.1 since i havent done it yet. You need to connect to iTunes and restore.

had same problem tried every diff option from diff forums, finally i tried some other guys suggestion which sorted it out! put my phone in the freezer for about an hour then tried again and it restored from itunes!

Bad news first and we hope for good news as well
The device is in Recovery Mode and the data has already been deleted, you need to restore the device with iTunes in order to get the iPhone back into a working state
When the iPhone is restored you can then restore it from your latest backup using iTunes or iCloud and regain some, if not all, of your data.
The good news part only happens if you had a backup. -

The Update was not completed and due to incomplete update your Device is now in Recovery Mode and the only option left with you is to Restore your iPhone using iTunes on your Computer which will take your iPhone to Factory settings. -
